I think I've rooted the output amps on my head unit.........

Accidently plugged the 12V/earth/battery backup/antenna socket into the speakers output plug and the speakers plug into the 12V/earth/battery backup/antenna socket (don't ask, it was dark & I was tired), managed to blow a couple of fuses (??) but the unit didn't smoke...

Here's the symptoms, maybe someone with product knowledge has an idea...
When correctly plugged in, unit powers up ok.
Press power button, antenna raises & display works
Tuner works
Cassette deck works
NO SOUND!
Not even a squeak....
To all intents and purposes, the unit works perfectly ok, if I was stone deaf I wouldn't notice any difference from usual. But there's no sound....
Do you think I could've blown the output amps?? I got the datasheet & they have short-circuit protection so I'm thinking maybe not....all fuses are (now) intact & short of tracing wiring back through the dashboard  and then fault-finding the unit I don't know what else to do...(anyone got a circuit diagram?)
Any bright ideas??

Do the RCAs output a signal? If they do but not the speaker wires then you've blown the onboard amp. Even though it has short circuit protection, that's to protect against the speaker wires shorting, but if you plug 12V into the speaker wire plug, then the circuit will fry before it protects anything.

Thanks TeK, forgot about the RCA's! I'll check 'em soon....
Yeah, you confirmed my worse fears about the short-circuit protection -- it was too much to hope that it would be idiot-proof as well!:D
Cheers,
Rob

Damn, no RCA's.......if you look very quickly in semi-darkness (as I did), you'll see the holes at the back where they WOULD be if fitted...
Oh well, I've started tracking down a couple of replacement Philips TDA8561Q power amplifier IC's through my industry contacts. With a bit of luck I can get them as free "samples" and I'll soon have sounds again :) :D

You could always check to see if the matching -ve and +ve speaker wires for each corner have become shorted inside the head unit. Just grab say -/+ Left front wires and check resistance with a multimeter. If it's 0, then your amp is fried My friend had a cheapy pair of subs and we ran a Bass test CD on it once but I guess they couldn't hack it and one of them died. Checked the wires and one of the subs had melted a voice coil.

HOORAY! Managed to buy a couple of replacement power amplifier IC's from USA (US$12 each + US$5 p&p).....stuck 'em in an VOILA! we have sounds again -- oh joy!:D :D
