Hi all,
I have a s2 rx7 and want to put a 13bT into it.

I hav read up a little and so far i have noticed that the main probs will be the turbo manifold hitting the steering box.
the sump not clearing the stering arm and i need to change the front cover so i can mount it to the orig brackets.

are there any other real hasels involved?
like will the gear stick line up with the console ok?(will be using a s5 or 4 box)

Also how much work is involved in putting a hilux dif into a s2?

ive heard that some dont need any shorening at all is that true?

Also what will the cost of the new turbo manifold ect be.

Thanks alot.
Peter

If you can get parts off a series 2/3 box, and pull the end off your series 4/5 box, then the gear shift will be in the right place. If you don't change these parts, then the gear shift will be in the wrong place, requiring you to cut some of the tunnel. When you get your series 4/5 box, sit it next to your series 2 box, and you will see the parts you need to change. Its just mainly the top shifter section, but it requires you to pull the back end of the gearbox off to do this, hence breaking the seal. I'd rather break the seal than cut the tunnel thou..............

one of the best manifolds is a mandrel mild steel manifold, costs around 500 buck, don't remember where my mate got it from thou..............

Hi Rotorboy,

I am doing this conversion at the moment (S5 into S2).

You can get the turbo mainfold and move the turbo, but keep in mind that with the movenent of the turbo, you will also need to move the water and oil lines to the turbo, move the inlet pipe from the airfilter, move the exhaust, move the bov piping, move the BAC air outlet, and move the the main air outlet (to the intercooler). Not all these things may affect you. About AU$400/500 for the manifold. Probably that much again for the other stuff.

I have been caught out by the gear shift thing. I had mine "overshortened" (by a dickhead), to suit a Series 1 which require more shortening. The S2 does need shortening unless you want to trim a bit from the rear of your shifter hole.

There is an off the shelf sump for this conversion, the S5 one does not fit over the steering arm. About AU$120/130

I used a modified 12A front cover instead of the 12Aturbo. You will need to watch the OMP. S5=4OMP lines. 12A=2. I purchased a front cover with this already sorted out. If you use the standard ECU with no electronic OMP on a series 5 motor, the standard computer can be tricked by using a few resistors.

I drilled a set of holes 20mm to the passenger side to move the engine over for steering box clearance. A number of shops in Brisbane do it this way as long as you use a standard turbo. There has been some conjecture about tailshaft vibration. It is not supposed to be a problem. Cannot confirm as my car is still on stands.

Watch the mounting of the GB crossmember. It is easier to use a S4 extension housing as this comes with a mounting setup the same as the S2. The S5 has a V setup which requires more stuffing around. S5 is a bit nicer as it has a synchro on reverse.

Need to consider fuel system, I stuffed it all in front of the diff: surge tank, low press fuel pump, low press fuel filter, efi pump, efi filter and a shit load of fuel line.

The whole thing is a hassell

Don't know about diffs

The conversion isnt that hard..

Arran has already outlined the main problems with the conversion...

The turbo manifold isnt really a problem. The turbo will be moved forward to clear the steering box, and all the other stuff that has to be changed, IE, water lines, etc, isnt really difficult. As for moving the exhaust, blow off valve pipe, intercooler pipes, intake pipes, etc, its not a problem if all your conversion includes custom piping, but if your trying to keep everything factory standard, then it has to be moved.

With the Hilux diff, they arent exactly a bolt in, and its not a cheap conversion either.

Because Hilux's were leaf sprung, and RX7s are coil sprung, all new suspension mounts have to be made for the diff to fit, its quite an involved process and something you wouldnt do at home unless you really knew what you were doing

Thanks for all the info.

My dads a mechanic so i could do the hilux dif conversion with him:)
how much are they worth? also do thay come in LSD and single spinner?
do they need to be shortened?

also one more thing.
with the turbo manifold id rather spend my money on sumthign els.
is it posible to move the engine to the left a little?

would it affect handling?

Moving the engine to the left is an option, but it requires modified engine mounts, gearbox mounts, etc......will end up costing you the same anyway, so might as well leave the motor where it is supposed to be and get the manifold..

Hilux diffs arent that cheap...not sure if they are LSD or not, but most of the ones I've seen are, whether they are made LSD or came from the factory like that, I dont know..

I've been quoted 2200 for the entire conversion, but that price seems a bit much to me.

if you are putting a 13b t in a series 2 with a series 4/5 box you DONT need to modify the tunnel to fit the shifter, i have done this conversion several times and all you need to do is slot your standard engine plate 10 mm back and redrill where your engine mounts sit in the crossmember 10mm forward, change your sump to an import(usa version)13b s2version,change your front cover to either a modified(to take oil return from turbo)12a one or 12a turbo(but be careful, there is two needle roller bearings which hold the end float true in the engine, when you remove the front cover ,one can fall down slightly and when you tighten the front nut back up you end up crushing it and before long your crank is moving back and forth(not good)talk to a rotary shop in your area and they may show you what i mean ,as far as the manifold, dont shift the engine across, its bodgey! you can get a cast manifold for this caonverion for $395 roughly from jap performance in sydney, good luck with it!

In regard to the Diff...

A few weeks ago i saw a all new diff going into a S2
it was a "Full LSD" from
"BOSNJACK Engineering"( they do the drivetrains for the V8 Supercars)
this Diff was supposed to be as strong as a 9 Inch

It came all complete... brakes(discs and calipers), splines. centre and D/Shaft....
It was "The whole kit and Kaboodle" as they say

I remember the whole thing was between $2 - 3000

It seemed a little excesive for my liking... but i was still very impressed with it :D
And no doubt the guy is out having fun at this time...

So if ya want to go that far and wack in something that im told "will not die easily"
Let me know and i can put you in contact with the right people :D
