View Full Version : Heat Shielding / Turbo Bags

I have got a turbo in the RX2 on a custom manifold. It brings it pretty close to the strut tower. I have not made any sort of heat shielding yet.

Has anyone used those turbo bags? I have heard that they reduce turbo life due to keeping the heat in.
What are they like for controlling heat. Would it burn the paint if it was touching it?

Being of temporary nature, I dont want to pop rivet a plate to the strut tower as I reckon this would cook the paint underneath.
There is not much room, my next option is to slot the engine mount and slide him over, giving me a bit more room to make a heat shield from aluminium or something.

yeah, i used turbo bag for my to4. it seemed to work great. as u would probably know with rotors those turbine housing get especially red hot. when i took the turbo all carbon deposits was white. i have heard of turbines actually melting when using turbo bags

Maybe if I used only half of it?

The amount that it gets driven, it hopefully wouldn be a problem, after all the turbo is dead stock.

Personally i'd rather replace turbos once a year, than respray the damn engine bay

Even though you say the turbo's close to the strut-tower, you couldn't make a shield (I suppose a highly-polished one would be best) that crews to the strut-tower? Wouldn't that save the paint as well as not melting your turbo?
Obviously it's not as good as one of those bags, especially in terms of extracting extra power, but it's probably a cheaper solution. :)

Yeah Forg that would work, the only problem is that I want to take it off at a later date, I'm pretty sure that the paint will be burnt by the plate.

The best would be a heat shield that is mounted to the turbo that doesn't actually touch the paint. But I dont think I have enough room. Thats why I was considering the turbo bag.

Another thread suggested using ceramic coating on turbos to keep the heat in, might be better in the long run, and takes no room.

i just got my turbo manifold HPC coated, its still very hot.

my brake booster is about 20cm away from my DP and it flaked all the paint off the bottom side of the brake booster. thats gotta be good for braking ability

I have bought a 'turbo kit' from the "coolit" company. i'll let you know how i go.
