85kW, that's about 115hp... holy crap, that's not much! By far the easiest would be the DOHC 18R-G, which has up to 140hp in factory trim. If you want something a bit newer, the 1G-GE goes up to 160hp. It's an inline six, but only 2 litres and quite compact so well worth considering.

I have an 18R-GEU (fuel injected) in my 77 Celica, and it goes pretty hard for what it is. Whack a turbo on it though and the fun really starts... :)

im with norbie here. the 1g-ge would be a great swap into an early celica

I deliberately left the 3S-GE out because the original poster wants something that will "easily fit". That rules the 3S out immediately I'm afraid. :(

would a 5M-GE go in easily?

Definitely not! M series engines are long and heavy. It would be a lot of work to fit one in, and even if you did it the car would handle like a large bucket of poo.

Nah, theres a large amount of crap floating about concerning the fitment of 3S's into early Celicas. The turbo is a bit hard, but the NA version is dead simple. In fact you can even run the standard inlet manifold if you are really lazy! I know from experience :)

I have done both the 1G and the 3S. 1G is slightly easier, but I think the 3S would be worth the trouble. A lot more knowledge, parts etc out the for a 3SGE than a 1GGE, or for that fact a 1GFE :P

The 18R-G is an import engine, but it shares a lot of components (including most of the bottom end) with the locally-delivered 18R-C.

The 3S-GE was available locally in the ST162 Celica and SW20 MR2. The 3S-GTE was available in the Celica GT4.

All G series engines are imports. They were fitted to Jap-spec Supras and Soarers, among other things.
