I'm getting a decent sound system finally and I want some advice from people who know more then me. I am being offered a Crossfire P1 15" sub or an alpine 12" Type-R. Is anyone able to tell me which is a better unit overall, i.e. which one would you rather. I know nothing about subwoofers, all I know is that I want good quality bass, not a SPL monster. Sorry if this is an annoying question, but I have noone else I can ask.

Preferably i like twelves better. But what sought of music do u like to listen to. Rap, Techno, top 40, Everything.
Wait for tommee, snazy, motormouse, to answer as they seem to be some of the guys who no everything about sound.

Definitely go for the twelve then. Twelves are better than 15 for that sought of music.
Thats my choice
How much is each sub? What amp u using?

I can get them both for around the same price ~300-350, so thats not a big issue, thing is the people I'm buying it off reckon that the Crossfire is a better sub than the Alpine. I wish I could hear them both and then make a decision, but I dont think thats convenient as I don't know anyone who has either sub. I'll be using an Alpine F540 amp (4 x 80rms), with the fronts also running off it.

Whats sort of music is the 15 better for mate?

can you get to hear them both in a box?
preferabley ur not after an SPL monster right? so id suggest a sealed box for some nice tight bass as ported tends to get boomy...

as to wheather crossfire or alpine sound better i wouldnt know but its YOUR ears and let YOUR ears to the talkin :)

i recommend to not got for 15's as u stated ur not after big bass
just stick to a 10" for nice tight punchy bass or a 12 for an all rounder but u can get wither sub to sound as good...

hope this helps

Phoenix Gold, Soundstream and Orion are HEAPS better subs. You can prolly get a Phoenix Gold Xmax 12" for about $350.

I agree with sssgtr, I would steer clear of both!

You could get a JL Audio 12W0 (12") for approx $250 that would sound cleaner and more real and save you $$$

Ultimately go for the PG Xmax 12", this is a very good value for money sub as is the 12W0 above (I have one and am very happy!)

You will find the crossfire sub too boomy and the Alpine too fabricated or fake sounding. This will make sence when you listen to both.

The enclosure will play a big part in the sound also, to keep it natural sounding use a sealed box per manufactures specs and line with dacron.
