Fired it up on the weekend, and once I had the idle speed control valve sealed up (they seem to default to open without power) it idled more smoothly than I had hoped-at only 590-650 rpm. With only the two cast primary exhaust stacks on ot it sounds FILTH. We jacked up the rear and ran it through all the gears-no worries at all.
Talk about *****EN stoked.
I let it sit for 1/2 hour at idle, and the temp crept to 94.2 deg and stayed there without deviating for 25 mins or so till I shut it down.
Awesome.
Next thing is to hook the twin cast manifolds to the existing 3 inch system (for the benefit of the neighbours mostly) before anymore extended running.
I might even go for a short drive next weekend.
Now for the turbo....

Yay! Nah, fvck it, DOUBLE YAY! That is excellent news. Can't wait to see it in action. (via a video or some other such medium that avoids me having to go to Adelaide to see it.)

ow yea! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
There aint much better feeling that firing up your engine transplant for the first time :D
And having no exhaust is good too :D:D:D
this is the most interesting conversion in the past 12 months or more....I think we'll have to insist on a link to a mpeg!

Cheers for the encouragement lads-there were a few times when even I thought it would be impossible-but persistance has finally paid off (thank fu*ck). As for an MPEG file, I probably have access to a sony mavica with movie ability, but as for putting it on the web somewhere and linking to it i'm a total novice. If someone could give me a brief rundown on how to do it (in laymans terms), I'd be most grateful.
Once the motor and new diff (tall ratio Borg Warner LSD)are sorted, I'm going to have a go at getting it to stick to the road a little better-probably a bigger fron swaybar, and fitting one to the back as well (none at the rear from the factory). It'll never stick like a 1600, but a bit better would be nice.
It continues......
Sean
Seano,
I'll be back in adelaide this evening. Do not put the exhaust on untill I get to your place - please......
Guys - unless you've actually seen one of these things and actually realise how big the 4.5 is - hold onto your hats when you finally get to see vids - you're wildest of imaginations probably cannot begin to actaully understand or fathom Seans car.... and yes - thats a good thing.
Did any of you Adelaide guys see us at the drags at any point?
Just curious....
Good work Supercrown! dorifto mania soon enough :D

Drift mania? I'm not actually sure if it will be able to turn with all that iron in the nose! We shall see. Wouldn't mind having the suspension side of things sorted to the point that I could go for a few laps of a track one day though (albeit rather slowly through the bends).
I think the neighbours are going to get a bit of an earbashing this evening......

Here are some shots of the turbo manifold I have just finished.
Getting a new job and buying a house have really got in the way of this whole adventure. Not too much left now though.

what a beast!!!!!
Beast, cant get enuff of this project, i can see some of your ideas being used in the future on the old boy's Land Crusher :P just seems he's after a bit more stonk, and willing to go a differing route than the "drop in an turbo a 6.5L chev V8", that most of the fourbie guys go. Keep it up!

As it says, I'm nearly there. Radiator is mounted, exhaust manifold/wastegate/oil feed and drain/turbo all done, intercooler is finished, custom cables for throttle and trans are done, got the new shift box for the trans, modded valvebody is in, got new butcher trans cooler, custom alloy sump is done.
Before trip to dyno shop (planned to be there in 3 wks-would be sooner but wifey needs to be kept happy with some domestic modifications as well-ie dishwasher install/cooktop install.)
mount cooler (easy-will slot in perfectly-there are some bolt holes there already flukishly)
Do i/c pipes
wire up shift box
bolt sump on
fill with coolant
fill with oil
put on brown undies
strap to the dyno and hope it doesn't turn out to be :gay:

Fired it up last night after a 9 months of turbo conversion (interrupted by big holiday and house purchase-I'm slow-but not that slow) and it runs fine. The turbo spins with the slightest blip of the throttle. Should be on the rollers in 3-4 weeks now.

can't wait to see the torque figure, you have to post a dyno printout.
onya supercrown!
wheres Cplus been lately?
I'm here. Just really effing busy lately.
I spend approximately half an hour on average per week on the net at work. and all of it is work related. hohum. Pt Pirie did have its advantages.
Zac, when seano and his hangers on, not 'I' of course I wouldn't be caught dead in the ugly blue whale, do finally fire the thing up and drag it's wide ass down the strip in anger i'll let you know. Hey you may even be privvy to an invite to watch the fat bitch do her stuff on the dyno in a few weeks.
All of probably 150kW at the wheels
and 20,000N of tractive effort :D

at 1100rpm :)
I'd love to see it on the dyno.
My car will be painted within the fortnight (with any luck) and hopefully have the engine together in a few months, I'll keep you posted.

It'll make at least 160rwkw.
And secondly as for your rude comments about how it looks, it may be ugly, wide and whale like, but..um..err..
No, you're right actually

There's nothing wrong with any of those features SuperCrown. They all apart of the cars's character.
I can't wait to see it in action. When you get it dynoed please try and get some footage of it.
I've been following this build since you started and can't get enough, excited everytime i see a update :D
Seano,
My digicam has no sound, but i'll bring it anyway. Just make sure it's not a wednesday morning. Thats SACA inspection day.
1100rpm? Zac mate this one's TwinCam!!
The 5M saw the bad side of 8000rpm on a number of occasions, If this motor can't take 7G's it doesn't deserve to be under the bonnet. Well through it actually - you'll see what I mean :D, it's honestly one big ****er of an engine. they look large in Cruisers for chrissakes!!
Cheers,

Here are some pics of the (nearly) completed engine bay. It starts, runs fine etc, and I'm having the cooler piping welded today. Should be able to do some low boost testing this weekend. Missing in the photo, but now done is the intercooler and thermofans. Dyno is programmed for 3 weeks away.

I think i speak for everyone when i :worship:
Are you sure that engine didn't come out of a oil tanker ship.
I can't wait to see her running :)
Lookin awesome!!
Can I ask why you changed the TB position though? Are you sure it'll allow even spread to the unequal runner lengths in the inlet manifold?
Supercrown
26-07-03, 03:23 PM
Cheers dudes. It's all coming together now, and then once I begin to thrash it maybe it'll all start to come apart.......... (TBA)
Secoh, how are you mate?-the TB was moved to allow shorter i/c piping and better allow the hood to close. As far as air distribution goes, the air is entering the manifold at the opposite end to stock, at 180 deg to the original flow. The shape of the plenum is nearly a 3D rectangle-so it shouldn't really be much different to standard. The runners look different lengths, but infact are all equal due to the bottom half of the manifold. You are correct that this is not the optimal arrangement though, and in the future I'll be making a nice big VL Nismo style plenum.
I don't expect to be needing to push the motor hard enough to expose the shortcomings in the intake setup just yet though.....
:)
thats cool, it was hard to tell what the underside was like in the pic :D
Cant wait to hear about a full power run!! :D
forgive my ignorance but....what is the engine from??
er umm. **cough** Land Cruiser **cough**
