View Full Version : selecting the right turbo
I have upgraded my engine in my 92 MR2 (forged pistons, 1.6 mm HKS head gasket, strengthened head studs and the like), have a 3' dump pipe and exhaust, and am about to get an aftermarket ECU (prolly an Autronic). So I thought if I'm going to get a real performance boost I may as well upgrade the turbo, hence the question(s);
only go for BB ?
what do I look for in a turbo that is right for me ?
what are the best turbos to get for the MR2 for street/circuit use?
and is there any I should steer clear of ?
for a cheap option:
Try upgrading to the CT26 from a Supra/Soarer...
The one you have has the advantage of twin internal wastegates... this makes boost control and spool up quicker, however top end performance suffers a little bit.
Also, the wheel you have is ceramic i believe.
The Supra/Soarer CT26 (from 7mgte) is steel wheeled, one wastegate. A standard CT26 wouldnt' do too much for you, however there is plenty of room for a good turbo reconditioner to mill it out and fit a T04 wheel in the front. They can be made to handle a fairly huge amount of power, with US 7mgte owners making anywhere up to 450rwhp on modified CT26's.
CT26 will cost you about $400-$500... + cost of rebuilding with bigger wheels/clipped turbine etc... add this cost to the cost benefit of not needing a new manifold fabricated, and you're away.
Can I get the existing turbo on my car rebuilt in this fashion ? I thought the turbo on mine was a CT26, or is it a different kind ?
I will research what sort of turbo I have (I was told it was hi-flowed before I purchased it) and carry on...
I allready looked at the alltrac site someone replied with earlier
The MR2 and the Supra/Soarer both use a CT26 turbo.
However the MR2 turbo is a bit different. It has ceramic wheels (which means it can't support more than about 1 bar boost before cracking), it also has twin wastegates.
You probably *could* get yours rebuilt in this manner by having steel wheels fitted... i am not sure how well the twin wastegate setup works for high power applications... would be best to speak to a reconditioner who has worked with a few toyo turbos before....
If you decide to get a Garrett GTBB25 series ball bearing turbo I have a manifold to suit for sale. Check it out at http://home.austarnet.com.au/daviddando . Go to the "For Sale" section.

By the way later model MR2's came with CT20 turbos but yours is a CT26.
