View Full Version : 4AGZE into an AE86 Corolla
Hi there,
My name is Nathan, and I am currently in the process of putting a 4AGZE out of a AW11 MR2, into a AE86 '87 Corolla. I'm having a few gearbox troubles at the moment, and am wondering if any one has either done this convertion, has access to a manual for this engine, or can give me any information?
Please help as I'm starting to get a little fustrated.
Cheers
Nath
what do you need help with?
be a little more specific and maybe I can help.
also... try this link HERE (http://www.geocities.com/sprinter4agze/SCconversiondiary.html)
nathan,
i actually have the wiring diagrams for the 4agze - with a sort-of english translation.
i bet you are trying to fort out the clutch/flywheel - i know how to do this.
do you still have the rearcut? if so there may be a few bits i'm after off it!
email me for more info if you want (huntt@logica.com)

Wanting to know if you can use the gearbox off the MR2, and also what break upgrades need to be done to pass rego/engineers certificate?
have a look on www.toymods.org.au
There's heaps of toyota fans on there.
cheers,
SXer
Cheers Monty.
Statt,
That link didn't work, mind trying to post it again for me.
Thanks

birdn,
The Gbox won't go. The AE86 runs a 'RWD' gearbox. not at all like the gearbox in the AW11. However, GZE g/box do command a pretty penny as they are built tough, and some have an LSD (worth even more).
Check www.toymods.org.au as somebody else suggested. Lots of good Toyota info, and the forum is REALLY good.
Oh, AE86 were sold in Australia 83->85.5, so you must have typo, or import.
Hell, if you mean '87 AE82, then things will be that much easier, and yes you can use the gbox.
Best bet:
www.toymods.org.au
read the old and new forum's. All the answers will be there.
Best of luck,
Jaz
Jaz,
FYI - i have seen an aus deliverd '87 plated ae86 - so there were a few post '85's around....

Thanks Jaz, and sorry - you were right it is an AE82! Woops
Any idea about the breakes?
Not to worry if you don't as I'm about to check out the Toymods site.
Thanks
Nath
yes you'll need a brake upgrade and probaly suspensin as well

Thought so, AE82.
Brakes should form any major conversion where HP is increased a substantial amount, esp. if the car has solid rotor's.
Toby, was the '87 a fabled 'Levin' with 4AGE or stock 4AC (or even one of the Levin's imported to 'rally/race' but road reg'd).
Any case, it would need to have the 'kouki' indicators, front and rear bars.
That's why I think they stopped importing them in mid '85: parts changed. Or atleast, that is my understanding, so I may need to be corrected.

Remember that they may've had a few sitting around on the docks after they stopped making 'em in Japan; when someone says "plated" they often mean "compliance plated". They don't seem to have been big sellers (they were overpriced for something w/out the performance of a Twin Cam weren't they?), so the compliancing may have been put off as long as possible.
Jaz,
it was an 4ac powered car. was a few years ago now - but i think it was an update.
friend of mine in NZ ownes an ex-uk levin gt-apex - that is the update, and was built in '87 as well. (has the later type diff WITH lsd in it too!!)
nathan - brake upgrade. i suggest you update you brakes to twincam spec - vented fronts, and disk rears. ironically i just obtained a set of ae101 20v brakes, so the disks/calipers etc off my ae93 sx corolla will be up for grabs shortly.
T
Thanks for that guys.
Jaz, please keep me posted on the progress of your breaks, as I'm probably looking at doing this over the next few weeks. And I think your righ, I will probably go the discs on the back, with vented on the front
Can anyone recomend what breaks would fit/to use on the cheaper side of things?
nathan - update to the twincam brakes as i suggested - cheapest option.
Cheers.
Worte the wrong reply before. I meant for T to let me know how you go with those breaks.
for a gearbox......if your gonna drive it easy t50 might handle otherwise....w55-58......i dont exactly know what it needs to fit but I cant see why it wont fit with the right bellhousing.
michael.
ummm - if its an ae82 then the c52 - c56 boxs would be the go. the boxes that you mention are RWD.
nevermind - I'm sure he'll sort it out.
motny
its an ae86 rwd sprinter....
ae82 i am corrected =]
c52, c56, e51 are your picks of the parcel.

Did they go back to AE82 after AE86? Are the AE86 ones the one with the real square headlights, or the rectangular ones? It's kind of confusing, if they had sold AE86 from 83 to 85.5, then went to AE82 (FWD??) in 87??

The MR2 box won't work on a RWD car.
ae82 is FWD corolla...came out in 83 i think....series ran till 7/88.....

It's only confusing in Australia, because the AE82 came out here so much later than in Japan. In Japan, the AE86 & AE82 release-dates were very close to each other; I've seen '83 model AE82's for sale in New Zealand.
But in Australia, they imported AE86's not long after they were released in Japan, while still making AE70 Corollas here. It was basically just a coincidence that they stopped selling AE86's here at roughly the same time as the AE82 started production.
So they didn't really go "back" to the AE82 from the AE86; the AE86, being a Sprinter, was sort-of in a different line of cars (think of it as being as close to a Corolla as an MR2 is; well, nearly). Truth be known, AE86's were probably more like AE7x series Corollas under the skin than they were like AE82's.
Oh, the AE86 has rectangular lights that sit flush with the indicators, bonnet & grille; and they have a fairly smooth liftback, more raked than the AE82 Seca. They didn't have square lights; you may be thinking of the T18?
Thanks guys, all very usefull information. Keep it comin.
