I've just bought some focal splits and jaycar woofers (thanks Glenn), anyway does anyone know what colour wires are positive and which are negative for the s14 200sx?
Thanks.

with about 99% of speakers if you hold the speaker
with the magnet up and the terminals towards you
the right terminal is the positive
are you putting in a new head unit as well? or an amp?

I've already got a blaupunkt head unit so I'll be running them of it.
I managed to get a wiring diagram of the net and it tells me the colours but not which one is positive and which is negative.
Example. Front Left speaker has two blue wires but one has a yellow line down it and the other has a white line down it? which is positive is anyone guess?

ok in that case
get yourself an 1.5v battery like a C or D
and put the two wires at the head unit end
one on the positive termianl of the battery and the other
on the negative
the speaker should "pop" then look at the speaker if it pushes out
the cone then the wire at the positive end of the battery is the positive. If it pulls in the cone then the wire at the positive end of
the battery is negative.
hope this helps.
i would do exactly what bucket would do ti test the speaker polarity..
but a very helpful site for me is

You will find that the unofficial wiring code convention is to have the striped wire as negative, and the solid colored wire as positive. Your question isn't clear as to what wires you are trying to test, the wires coming out of your Blaupunkt head or the wires in your S14. The wiring for both should follow the above.
You might find that in factory speaker wiring, the front or rear pair share a common negative wire. You will realise this when you start testing wires and you get duplicates.
If in doubt, unplug the factory harness. Hook up a 1.5V battery to the speaker terminal, then measure voltage at the harness. If you have it the right way you will measure positive voltage. This is more flexible than the Thebucket's method since you can't always see the speaker cone move if it's only one person working on the car :).

I would have to agree with you chris
but I dont agree with tek
on head units the black trace is commenly negative
with speaker wires supplied with speaker
black trace are negative but coloured traces are positve
like with kenwood they have a red trace for right speakers and
blue traces for left.
with vehicles you can never guess by the colours. with some vehicles all the wires have traces
like with most mitsubishis for instance
and some cars have no trace on the wires
like on most toyotas
and some have both but do not follow teks model
like commodores the front speaker wires are solid colour
and the rear speaker wires have traces
on the s13, i once hooked up a earth to a black wire at the back behind the headunit to the headunit, and the rear light went out, nothing to do with topic but usefull
