I've just bought a car with a dud aerial...I'll check to see if there's any juice going to it first (in case it's something obvious), but generally are they repairable, or do you generally just toss them out and buy a new one?

Well from my experiences with my VL Calais electric aerial, go buy a new one if power, connections, fuse etc are OK

I'm on my 3rd now. I tried pulling my original one apart (which I think was factory) and it was just plain stuffed. The second one got bent by a tree but had already started playing up. They're not "user servicable" essentially.

babs,
they are indeed fixable. is it a factory one?
if so go get the mast from the dealer and put it in...
I can expalin how to do it.

Thanks Chris

Yup, it's a factory Mazda one for the MX5. ATM there's no signs of life, it's kinda at half-mast and not going anywhere fast :)

I'm popping into the dealer tomorrow to pick up some supplies, I'll get an aerial mast too.

Just for maintanence, I fortnightly wipe my aerial while fully extended with an oily rag, it cleans the crap off it and keeps it running smooth.

I finally got that aerial mast (other repairs took priority), and I've managed to confirm in the meantime that the aerial motor is indeed getting juice, and the motor does whirr about making a clicking noise (I've removed the fuse so it doesn't continue to stress).

I've now got the aerial mast, which look like a telescopic aerial with a serrated plastic rail coming out of the bottom.

What's the good word on installing it?

generaly you just unscrew the retaining collar from the top of the mast where it exits the panel then turn the radio on and pull the mast all the way out.Insert new mast into the resulting hole as far down as you can without to much force and then turn radio off. This will suck the mast into the antenna.Replace the retaining collar and turn radio on and off a few times and mast will center it's self.and your done.

Thanks for that...'cept in my case when I pulled out the old mast the serrated plastic "tail" was snapped, so I had to pull apart the motor to remove the dead bit.

After that the new mast went in just like you said and it works a treat :)
