View Full Version : turbo kits for holden 202
Does anyone know where I can get a turbo-kit for an holden 202?
Or am I better off getting one custom made?
There was an "special option" UC hatch SL/T(based on the UC Torana SL Hatchback), that came with an turbo 202.
They specs are as follows:-
6cyl, 3.3L, compression 7.0:1, single side draught carburettoer ,power(approx) 135kw@ 3800rpm, torque(approx) 390Nm @ 2600rpm.
turbocharger:- strata 2a, runs 12psi, waste gate limited.
behind the motor was a M20(4spd manual), and diff with 3.08:1 ratio.
Oddly enough The car came with 13x7 on the front and 14x8 on the rear.(I wonder what size spare it had)????????????????
DOES ANY ONE KNOW IF ANY OF THESE CARS ARE AROUND THESE DAYS?

There was also dealer tricked comodoe's. A mate bought the whole turbo setup off one of them. It was an Airresearch kit with T04 and 42mm garret W/G.

Hmmmmmmmmm....
How much do you recond one of these kits would set you back these days...? And how many of them were actually made back then...?
Anyone got any more info / photos?!?!?!
:D :D :D
Cheers.
I wouldn't mind knowing.

Another option is to superchrge it. There are kit available for the VN-VS 3.8l which would well and truely breath enough air for the 3.3l. A few people have said the SC14 super charger from the supra (I think) doesn't perform that well on the V6s but should on the L6.
The only thing is, you have to make all the brackets to mount it. I have seen it before in a VH. They took out the air cond. and put it there. They are about the same size.

CRS are also now making a bolt-on supercharger kit for the Holden 6:

I'm not sure it is listed on their site - but if you send Rod an email or give them a ring he will fill you in. A mate of mine was considering doing this.

...he has also just developed one for the old straight 6. I have seen pictures of it. A mate of mine has spoken to him and is considering fitting it to his EH.
Did you ring and speak to Rod?
I e-mail rod and he repiled and told me that if I fit an blower, i need to change the carby to an 350 holley or an 2" SU.
HighLife: Do you know anyone who has fitted one of these blowers to their car?
HighLife

..nah sorry - no one who has actually fitted one. A guy I know is looking into it at the moment though and is pretty keen to do it. There was a picture of the kit in Hot Rod magazine or something like that? One of those Hot Rod mags anyway.
350 Holleys and such arent that expensive - look in the trading post. If your keen you could even adapt a VK EFI set-up to it I reckon  That would be a sweet set-up for an old 6!
Look what was found lurking under the bonnet of an FC Holden Sedan - this wild induction system on an holden 6cyl.
It looks to be injected and supercharged, too.

...yeah thats looks the goods - triple dual thoat EFI throttle bodies on a blower!
I just remembered the guy at EH World (http://www1.tpgi.com.au/users/ernie64/index.html) is building a blown 202 at the moment which is in an EH Ute. He was very un-helpful to me and pretty rude actually - didnt think much of my twin turbo RB30 conversion I dont think and basically told me to go away!
But you might get a bit more out of him than I did ;)
If your keen on EFI, these guys have some dual throat EFI throttle bodies to die for:

Dont bother with a single 1g-gze blower on a 202, dont go that well.. maybe two 1g-gze blowers.
anyone wants to try it, I have a crank pully for a 202 that works with the stock electric clutch pully on the 1g blower to give a 1:1.6 drive ratio.. going cheap

You want a turbo kit for your 202
MIKE VINE TURBOCHARGERS is the place. THis is from Capalaba in Brisbane, hope I have got the suburb correct.
The fellow is a guru with the holden reds and has literally HEAPS of gear. He was a kit manufacturer for the red motor and maybe there haven't been many others since and his systems are ballistic!!
Go for it!!

Has anyone seen that lj/lc torana with an turbo 202?
The plates are else10s(reads as)easy 10s.
I've emailed the guy who built the engine but he hasn't mailed me back yet.(propley wants to keep the specs a secret?)

my old boss's mate has a LC gtr with a 186 turbo, drinks alcohol so no cooler ... the inlet pipes glow red hot! :0 car is seriously seriously worked and ran a 13 second pass still spinning the wheels at the 200 meter mark, not sure what mph but with SOME traction it'll be nuts
mick munro in perth ran 9.96 @ 134mph in his turbo 202 LJ genuine street car using efi & Simon Pimms race LJ from MacKay ran 9.47 @ 138 with carby turbo 202
OLJ25L: Do you know any thing else about this LJ turbo 202 torana? like techinal specs?
simon pimms LJ carby turbo runs on Av-GAS dosn't it?
Have you seen the size of the holley carby on this car, its an 850 D/P, it's just as big as the engine.

nos388: I have the garrett manifolds you need and am willing to sell them for about $300, they are in good nick
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think Mike Vine used to/still uses the garrett manifolds?
If you want to go fast use a turbo why use power to make power with a supercharger..
I did own a daily driven lj torana which would run 11.4 at every street meet consistantly for over 12 months..
Was fitted with v-trim to4 turbo p rear wheel cannot disclose ex housing and rare large port intake manifold is was a fantastic car and the quickest daily driven car around at the time did these times on street tyres...
Had trimatic and 3.5 gears 750 holley 3inch exhaust...
would turn the tyres in top gear..when required...
What was it's fuel useage like?(what am i saying its got an 750 holley?)
If I was to go turbo I would fit vk e.f.i.
Fuel usage i guess was to be exspected average if using a vk intake and injector setup you would have to get the ex manifold made to suit as the off the shelf units locate the turbo very close to head from what i can remember and looking at a vk manifold it would interfere doing it this way you could also run a intercooler to make things even better my engine made 415 HP on the dyno with super fuel back in those days 96-97 the exhust size is very critical to lag i had a .84 split pulse with a P wheel this was fantastic with 2800 converter i could get 6-7 PSI off boost on the line and would run 1.5 60 FT times ....On the street had about 1.5-2 car lenghs then it was on full boost .....
Ok has anyone seen an turbo 202 in vb-vk commodore(like that one in zoom)?
Where could the intercooler piping be run, while still retaining an stock appearance from the outside?
into the cabin and have an air to air cooler on the passenger seat, cooling that with your air conditioning maybe?
sel300: turbos use power to make power too you know...

I've got a whole stack of turbo gear that I may be willing to part with given the right price. It was all to be put into my VC which isn't going to be finished due to financial issues.
Blue (12 port) head, flowed to approx 500hp - final figures not available as I was waiting on the bottom end so we could work out compression, therefore cam specs, therefore flow requirements
Intake manifold - heavily modified 'Strada' kit. Intake manifold cut in half, ports tidied up and flowed, match-ported to head, then alloy welded back together. Intake for plenum now on other side of plenum (ie now goes across the head rather then directly from the turbo). This was done to allow an intercooler to be put between the turbo and the plenum. Kit was
originally for red motor, now suits blue. Injector bosses in place if you want to put EFI on it - which is STRONGLY recommended if you want to intercool it.
Exhaust manifold - basically standard Strada item. Has been tidied up and flowed, matched to head. Similar layout to stock Holden 6 intake manifold - turbo sits about where the carb would sit. External wastegate sits opposite the turbo exhaust housing.
High-flowed TO4 - I was told it would support upwards of 30psi on a 202 revving to 8,000rpm. Intake housing has been rotated 180degrees (away from the plenum) to ease installation of piping for intercooler.
External wastegate - can't remember exact size but I was assured it would be more than adequate for the task at hand. Wastegate spring is set to around 12psi I believe.
Forged pistons, toughened rods - all six in good shape.
I also have some stock parts that may be of use (block, spare head, sump, twin SU carbs). Would be after a particularly good price to part with the turbo and wastegate as they are bloody good bits of kit.
As for where to route intercooler piping - it's very easy if you move the battery. The way I was setting mine up, it was going to be a proper cross-flow intercooler, ie inlet on passenger side, outlet on driver's side. The outlet would go beside the chassis rail and over the top of the engine into the plenum.

Considering the specs of the parts revhead is selling what size intercooler would best be most effcient?

Oops sorry NOS, with the email notification thing not working properly until recently I missed the posts!!
I currently have a buyer for the parts, but will let you know if that doesn't work out.
Dunno what would be the 'best' size for an intercooler - my understanding is that size isn't absolutely critical, what's more important is flow and pressure drop vs cooling properties. Just get one that fits nicely in the front of the car, and have it tested on a flow bench or similar.

why would that help you. Zoom speaks a lot of bullshit and in addition the photos are always from a presentation view point not a technical view point.
Besides do you know exactly what cooler, pipe work etc, you are using. I believe if you did have any of it you don't need pictures, its called "makin it fit".
