View Full Version : Boost on a Cordia

just been out driving my car... i'm noticing that, although i hit 13psi... after 4500rpm, it feels like i hit a brick wall, like.. there is no power...
watch my boost gauge, and sure enough, at 4500rpm, my boost gauge shows that boost drops down to 10/11psi... try it again.. same thing. try it in 4th (first noticed it in 5th) and the same thing happens. Smack dab on 4500rpm. Whats the go with that?
Also... this only happened just now.. i give it shit... boosts up, boost drops at 4500rpm... then the engine shuts down. It stalls. I think.. "what the hell?"
starts up again fine... try it again... boosts up, boost drops at 4500rpm, and the engine shuts down again!
Dunno why it's doin it, but i'm not too impressed... best not be something bad.... also... i shut the car down.. let it sit for say 30 mins to an hour, and then started it... it starts but idles at 500rpm.. rev it but it don't rev any higher than 750rpm then eventually dies.... crank it again and it don't fire... crank it again and it fires and i drove home fine. idled fine at the lights etc... boost still drops at 4500rpm though...
bloody weird and it's got me buggered as to what it could be... i'm noticing that the engine bay is a lot warmer than it used to get, guessing its from the turbo getting warmer cos i'm running more boost? you reckon this extra heat is playing silly buggers on the ecu or something? knock sensor?
any help appreciated
is the car stock?
does it have an intercooler?
Did this only happen when you put the boost up?
Have you put the boost down and tried again?
If you are running 13psi of boost through the cordia with no intercooler then you are going to cause some serious damage very soon.
I think that it is like a fuel or boost cut that you are hitting.
I don't think that it would have anything to do with what rev it cuts at.
You're injectors and fuel pump probably can't supply enough fuel for 13 psi of boost for long enough and the computer cuts it to save itself from detonation.
Please answer the first bunch of questions..

the engine internally is stock. rebuilt about 35,000kms ago. Only real mod in there is the hypereutectic pistons and removed balacnce shaft.
i am running an intercooler, but also, i have been running 13psi for about 2 months now with no problems before.
this only just started happening last nite.
i haven't put the boost down to standard yet...
it doesn't feel like a boost cut.. the boost levels drop, but there is no harshness about it (ie.. car doesn't "hop" sorta thing like when you hit rev limit)
The fuel pump should be fine. Its a VL Turbo fuel pump, so I don't think the pump is the problem... maybe just need injector service you think?
even if it was injectors, why would the engine shut down?
i was also tossing up the idea that it could be a dead/dying air flow metre?
any thoughts?
Air flow meter..
why didn't I think of that..
My brothers RS TURBO was doing the exact same thing.. as soon as the boost would build up, it would sort of go into a limp mode..
We fixed it by spraying the hot wire thingy in there with K&N Filter cleaner then washing it off... let it dry, put it back on the car and it was sweet.
Don't know what type of Air flow meter is on the cordia though..
there are different types.
That was happening to me as well man at 4,000revs.
But it was to do with the microtec.
Im guessing you have a stock computer?
Could be a heat prob?
Try putting it down to 9psi or so and take it round the block and see if that fixes it.
Coz if it does then just nudge the boost up till just b4 it starts playing up and leave it there.
If not jump back on here and i'll try to think of something else!:)
Maybe sum heat sheilding or heat wrap would not go astray!!

TT: it's a Carmen Vortex air flow metre... big hunk of junk.. haha!
FulSik-NT: yep.. stock computer... if i can't figure anything else out, i might just try and cut that infamous yellow wire (boost cut wire) and see if that fixes it...
cheers for ya help guys

Check for air leak between air-flow meter and throttle body.
Sounds like some is leaking under boost. The fact that you raised the boost probably stressed a weak point somewhere.
Also, the Cordia engines have a stack of vacuum lines in and around the intake manifold. Check them for leaks.
It definietly sounds like an vacuum or airleak problem somewhere due to the funny idle you had.
Also check the vacuum line to the boost sensor on the firewall.

Don't cut the yellow wire. It used for fuel mapping as well as boost cut.

for real? hrmmmm... lucky i know of ppl who have cut this wire before and had no problems...
might just leave that wire alone then.. haha!
cheers

I have the yellow wire cut on mine.. I havent had anyproblems with it, apart from the stock boost guage doesn't work. No fuel problems nuting. Id say if u want more boost cut that wire.
Sounds to me its a AA or AB hitting boostcut as the AC will jolt the whole car.
AA + AB boost cut = 14.5psi (1bar)
AB (late models) + AC boost cut = 12-13psi
:)

i cut the wire, and still no go... does the same thing.
it's not hitting boost cut... i'm guessing now that it is a fuel delivery problem?
would that effect it not being able to hold over 10spi over 4500rpm?
i bypassed the bleed valve so it was running 8psi.. at 6000rpm, it feels like it runs out of fuel or something..
also, i have a little leak from my throttle body... normally when i clean it, and take it for a 20 minute or so drive, there is traces of a leak there...
this time round, i've cleaned it and it's still dry as after 3 days worth of driving
do you reckon it could be related? or would i have two problems? haha

Maybe its miss firing on heaps of load. Whens the last time you've change the sparkplugs, leads, dizzycap ?
If its back firing out of the exhaust with a deep "boof" sound, it sounds to be its ignition related.
Hey all you cordia guys,
I know this is off topic but I blew my clutch last nite racing round town.
Does anyone have or know of where to get a heavy duty clutch for a 85model cordia. Coz there is not many places up here in Darwin
Any help would be greatly appreciated
:D

Its coz the cordia is a 'Performance car' its runnin at extreme temp, thats why things brake...lol:)

lol fair enuff ;)
Do you have a fuel cut defender?
Can't run big boost without one on a Cordia, I believe.
Cordia_Guy
12-11-02, 11:39 AM
FASTVP: no.. i don't, but boost cut on a Cordia is at just under 15psi. I'm only wanting to run 13psi, and it's not been hitting boost cut. I have hit boost cut in it before when i first the boost controller, so I know how that feels like. Its definetly something different to that.
Also, just an update incase anyone was interested... the car didn't start on Saturday.. not had time to suss out what the problem is. Will have a gander some time this morning, but i'm thinking its the fuel pump. Hope this was the problem all along...
Cordia = Problems man
But I still love em!!!:)

hehehe... yeah i know.... its already died once before so i replaced it with a VL Turbo one a while ago... off to find reciepts now to see if there was a warranty...
i still say GO THE CORDZ! :D
Got ur car goin yet bud? :)
Still waiting for my clutch to get here they forgot to send it so now it should hopefully be fixed by next Wednesday!!
Cordia_Guy

nah... not yet.... still in exam mode
last exam is on Tuesday, so hopefully it will be fixed by the end of the week if all goes to plan :D
hope u get yours fixed when ya expect it to :)
Cool, cool.
Yeah mine never seems to get fixed when expected for various reasons..... So now I just don't get my hopes up anymore

hmmmmm
my cordia runs 18psi whenever i want it to, and no cutting of yellow wire - i dont think the boost cut works, but hey im not exactly gonna fix it now am i :D
imo it sounds like a vacumm leak like what has been said above, but i would also check to make sure the fuel pressure regulator is ok too. One other thing to check would be the injectors, get them cleaned, its possible they aint squirting enough

wow 18psi.. Any 1/4 times?
cordygsr
20-11-02, 09:13 PM
well i live in canberra, so the closest strip is eastern creeek, which is kinda gay if you ask me, so no 1/4 mile times
maybe very low 14's i would think? ive been meaning to g-tech it, but i dont think the readings on them are very reliable :(

ok.. quick update..
got fuel pump problem fixed.. it was the fuel pump relay that was shagged.
still got the same boost problem though, and the car feels like it hesitates when ya cruising along.
A couple times, it stalled whilst I was driving... just popped the clutch to start her up again and drove fine (bar the hesitating feeling)
grrrrrr
Hrrrmmm,
I hate it when you just know that the car is not really feeling right!!. Sometimes other people don't even notice, but it is enough to give you da shits hehehe:D
The hesitation when your cruising stilll sounds like fuel problem???
Maybe you should get a air/fuel guage coz when my car hesitates its due to not getting enough fuel for a brief second.
Go find a VL fuel pump or something???;)
Cordia_Guy
02-12-02, 09:54 AM
i've got a VL pump ;)
just bought a fuel filter though... will change that some time soon i think and see if it makes a difference.
Cool man,
Hope it works out!!
P.S. My clutch is fixed now and I finally cleaned my airfilter last nite.....wow what a difference good airflow makes hehehe. Gets on boost heapz easier and smoother!! :D
Now I know this is a little off topic!!
But this is sort of the unofficial 'cordia thread' :D
I've broken one on my engine mounts!! :(
It's the one at the back of my engine, down the bottom near the firewall, just above the gearbox.!!
I know I have a Vr4 engine but it uses the original 85 GSR AB mounts!!
I don't really wan't to get a second hand one from the wreckers. I've tried everywhere, even mitsubishi does not stock them anymore.
Has any1 broken mounts(i'm sure you all have hehehe:p )
Where did you get new ones???? or did you have to get second hand ones from the wreckers. Coz nowhere in darwin has them... I tried Mitsubishi, repco, jap engine centre....all those sort of places
thanks guyz!!
/\/\onstabishi
03-12-02, 11:35 PM
hehe ive also broken mine twice. But anyway. What u need to do is take them and get the rubber made up from a rubber shop, Clarks rubber or soemthing. Just get them to use the same material as ya other mounts. Should cost ruffly around 40-60$ for them to make it up. This way is a LOT cheaper and be more effective then buying a genuine mouht from mitsubishi, $200 or so for a rear mount! Which is just bull s#@t
Cordia_Guy
03-12-02, 11:37 PM
i've busted both the front and rear engine mounts.
i got some solid engine mounts made up and installed... made from polyeurathane...
if you are handy with a spanner, you could probably get one sent up to you from RPW here in Perth.
If not a solid one, you can get a new normal one from them. Shouldn't be a problem to get one sent up to you seeing as they send stuff over east and overseas.
for more information, www.rpw.com.au
the solid engine mounts in my Cordia work well. Less axle tramp and torque steer, but the downside is that at idle, the whole car vibrates (if you idle at 1000rpm, at 1500rpm its fine). This vibration only occurs at idle, once ya take off, its fine. It's livable vibrating but.
;)
Thanks guys!!,
My friends were telling me to get some polyeurathane and just change the inserts!!
Yeah i'ts not too bad my car idle's at 1380rpm so it shouldn't be too much vibration and it will be better than having a broken mount all together!! :)
Yeah original mounts suck!! and the one from Mitsubishi I needed they don't even stock anymore
Hmmm...... Less torque steer...that is always good hehehe:rolleyes:
Well I had a look at my other cordia(dead one:D ) and the mount doesnt look too bad, the other3 are stuffed.
But i'll try that for the mean time and i'll get the other one rebuilt with new ruber, then i'll have a spare hehe:p

Dunno man???
Neva been able to get hold of a G-Tech!! and the time I took it down the drags I blew an oil line out and neva got a good time!! Then I blew a clutch.........so on and so on!!, you guys know how it goes i'm sure hehehehe :)
I would guess I could do a 13 or 14sec pass. But it needs tuning coz it's running rich and I don't trust the guys up here in Darwin so i'll get it tuned when I get to Adelaide in 3weeks!!
I've got a Vr4 2lt Galant engine
Bigger turbo than standered
Front mount Supra intercooler
K&N Air Filter
Turbo back exhaust
Blitz BOV
Blitz Boost controller
Runs on a Microtech MTx8 computer!!
I have got a better turbo sitting at home on da other cordia..... i'm just too slack to change it ova....oh well it can be my spare :D

ok guys....
update.
I changed the fuel filter, got a new fuel pump relay, and changed back to my old GFB bleed valve...
took it for a drive and it drove fine. Holds 13psi no worries. Tried changing it back to the TurboSmart bleed valve, and the problem came up again. Couldn't hold boost and it felt like it hit a brick wall and didn't have enough fuel.
Swapped back over to the GFB valve, and took it to the drags.
Was doing 14.7's and 14.8 mostly the whole day but managed a best of 14.679.... the exact same fastest time as my previous occasion.. .haha! was 2kph less though in the terminal speed (155kph)
So yeah, the car seems to be running fine now... so if anyone is interested in a TurboSmart Single Stage Gated Boost Controller, let me know eh ? ;)
