Ok whats the professional opinion on the PBR premium brakes as used on XR6T ($3K option), HSV (GTS300 ect), Corvette (ZO6), Mustang (cobra) ect - VS Brembo OEM setup on premium AU3 falcons (eg 250 pusuit ute) , MY02 STi WRX, EVO6.5 ect ...

Whats the difference in performance like for street driving and the occasional track work?

XR6T ($3K option),
Haven't seen it can't comment yet but if its the same C5 caliper as the R8 Commodore it should be O.K. If its the C6 I'm waiting on pics and specs for that at the moment (on holidays)

HSV (GTS300 ect),
Fugging brilliant 6 spot Ap front 4 spot rears.....awesome brake system.....one of the best ever fitted to a production car.Same brakes used on Nations cup car (not 427) different pad material for street.

Corvette (ZO6),
A friend of mine in Virginia has one. I drove it last year when I visited her. Its a great machine. It runs a similar setup to the R8 with PBR 2 piston sliding front calipers.(C5) Great street setup but normally changed for race use.

Mustang (cobra) ect - VS Brembo OEM setup on premium AU3 falcons (eg 250 pusuit ute) ,
Standard "T" series looks similar to R8 Package which I belive is the same or close enough to the BA XR6T. Brembo setup looks the goods similar in performance I'd say to the GTO commodore Harrop setup.Though they say the "small " brakes @329mm are 4 spots too but I'm not 100% on this one I'd say more likely PBR 2 spot sliding. I know the 355mm are Brembo 4 spots.

MY02 STi WRX, EVO6.5 ect ...
Awesome Brembo (Gold - WRX) units 4 spot front 326mm disc and 2 spot rear. Very well balanced system for the car.....just needs better pads and fluid from the factory to really help it stop like it goes. Can be adapted to earlier models too. (kits avail). Much better track package and more than enough for the serious street car.

Basically a 4 piston or even 6 will outperform a 2 piston sliding design for rigidity and pedal feel. Also reduced pedal effort and higher clamping force. But these big PBR setups being used now and in the future by Ford and Holden are certainly up to the task for most drivers.

And thats my profession opinion...........leave the money on the fridge.
For my personal option..............thats another story.

Just to satisfy my pedantic side, there are certain drawbacks to the Big brakes on the subarus as a 'track package', not the least of which being the unfortunate tendency for the tiny wheel bearings to fail under the increased axial load, destorying the hub, shearing the 'ears' off the caliper tearing the brake hose and setting fire to that corner of the car.

Yes but thats not a fault of the braking system thats piss weak engineering on suspension design.
Hence the same reason they had to put uprated struts into Nations Cup Commodores because the braking forces from the huge 6 spots can do some real damage to normal suspension components.
Most people don't consider this and just want to fit the biggest brakes that can fit under the wheel without a thought to whether the car car actually handle it.
343mm is plenty big enough for 99.9% of Commodores even on the track.
Most other cars get away with much less.

Are you criticising my lust for 378x35mm brembos on my gemini?

Not at all
Give me your credit card # and we'll talk

Gemini .......hmmmm
DBA425 magna rotor 276mm*24mm
B843-100/1 Commmdore calipers
DB1075 pad

thats plenty big enough

I did actually sit one of the rotors from our konica car 'around' a gemini hub/rotor.... maybe a *teensy* bit of overkill.

I am planning to use VT commodore calipers on my BMWe30 325 on dogbones, together with machined VW 288mm disks. The aim of the VT calipers is to double the pad area. What pads are available eg DS2500. Car will have road and track day use.
I am in Perth.
Any suggestions?

DS2500 aren't currently made for the VT caliper though I can get them done for you.
They charge for the base pad they use + $66 for cutting. I can't remember the pad used and won't be back at work till Monday. I'll check then. We have had a set made for the Police Dept for evaluation so I know it can be done.

I don't see a 28mm thick disc in the catalogue for VW. You need to use this disc thickness cause if you use the 25mm it can cause probs with pad jamming in the caliper and when it gets low on friction material it can actually fall out of the caliper.
Give me the dimensions you want and I'll see if I can find a better disc.
DBA484 , DBA486 , These couple of Honda ones might be closer to the mark.

dattoman - can you give me your address? It might be easier if I called in and explained my requirements.
thanks, andy

With the Brembo calipers on the STi, what choices are available for aftermarket pads? I pulled mine out on the weekend and looking at the unique design (as opposed to a common sliding caliper), I'd guess the choices are lesser?

Does the DS2500 come in that fitment?

Yes they certainly do come in 2500. I carry them in stock. They run the same shape as the EVO Lancer.

I'll have to check the part #'s at work and the prices tomorrow.

Your right about pad choices being alittle limited. Its not like you can pop down to Repco for some replacements. Not that you'd want too.

I'll also price the replacement pads for you too. I think they are a Galfer brand. Thats the norm for Brembo. Do you remember the brand name on the back of the pad ??

The branding on the back of the pad is brembo as well

Its probably a Galfer
I didn't get a price on those cause......mmmmm......I forgot
But I got the price on DS2500 for you

Fronts FCP1334H @ $320
Rears FCP1282H @ $155

Hope this helps.

Excellent work dattoman,

I'll see how the stockers hold up (only just run the car in), and if not totally happy the DS2500's could be the go
