Yes yes yes, i know what you're thinking, but no its not the normal 'what can i do?' question.

Instead...

Ive heard one or two people say that its unwise to upgrade the rotors (300 odd mm) on the stock AE86 stub axles.

If this is indeed true, why???

maybe they have weak struts

over to you Bill

But then again some have said there is absolutely no problem at all.

Im more interested in Why, as in the forces that act on the stub axle during breaking. Also how bigger rotors/calipers act on the axle.

The stub axles are small and weak. You come down on a hard landing and you will snap an axle and have no wheels left. :) For a brake upgrade look back a couple of pages I posted a topic on it.

What the hell do you think im going to be doing, Jumping my '86 over 15 busses like Evil Kenevil maybe:p ?

The '86 stubs are definately not weak, thery are rated at much more than enough for the vehicles weight each so there should be no hasstle whatsoever when the right offset wheels are used.

The hard landing you speak of is purely academic. Manufacturers no doubt put more than enough engineering design into such things. If they were indeed weak, then the car would not have been approved/engineered for sale.

Also many many '86's were rallied and raced (heavily abused) with no problems at all.

Nonetheless, thanks for your 'help' everyone but i think ive got it worked out (sheer forces and whatnot). Ive put the 300 odd mm rotors on hold for the far simpler/cheap Hilux/Pug/XT130 upgrade which i looked into a few months ago.

Rex, I asked an engineer who specialises in brake upgrades and that was the reply I received about sprinters. Ok maybe you won't need to upgrade your stub axles but I did because I tarmac rally mine and on certain occasions it has been know to get air. I was simply answering your question as to why some people use different stub axles.

Nah you're right mate. The :p gave it away, besides it's far too easy in a medium such as this to take things the wrong way. I just go with it.
