View Full Version : 270mm MX5 ROTORS ???

Dear DBA,

About 6 months ago it was brought to your attention that the current model MX5's front rotors are larger than the previous model's 255mm rotors. At that technical night, we also stressed that as many of our Club members cars are into the 30,000klm zone with scored discs that there will certainly be a need to buy a premium slotted rotor like you manufacture for other cars soon.

That time has well and truly come. A member recently waited for 6 weeks to buy OEM rotors because they are not even holding stock in the country - not your problem I know. One of our SP turbo's has also already done a set of pads so his rotors are next as well. I have also just ordered new pads as mine are stuffed - and so are my rotors.

So, where is this little project up to? When can I expect to be able to get some slotted rotors for my model car? I noticed that you already make a disc for the 2001 Mini - so why not my 2000 MX5?

Dattoman1000 - you must have a newer version than the one I reviewed from the DBA website. I am indeed happy to say that yes, that listing is not just for the SP and Titanium but all NB8B models from 2000 with VVT and 6sp.

If indeed they exist, I wish to thank DBA for answering to the market demand and responding to our requests.

I'm off to order them NOW and I'll let our club forum know!!

DBA are FoS.

I just spoke to their sales guys and they are not planning to produce them until JUNE :wtf: . I have been chasing these for 6 months.

This car is three years old. Not everyone drives a bloody REX. The MX5 is the highest selling sports car in history. Wake up to yourselves DBA.

Another customer lost.

I feel your pain Chris,

I too asked about new slotted rotors, but was told they're not about to start producing any soon...

Chris,

I too was let down by DBA for our late model MX-5.

I had to wait 11 weeks for Mazda to cough up their own inferior product. :wtf: (Just love this icon!)

Seems DBA just don't want my money!

Another customer walks ou the door...

DBA: The current model MX-5 (NB8B) has some serious quality issues with its' front rotors.

My tip is, extract the ole digit, and make a replacement available - you'll be run over by Club members - but not by the one's who've already bought somthing else...:O

Hey if you want to blame someone at DBA, it's me!

Please note that the MX-5 is on the short list for manufacture. Designing a disc rotor for motor sport is not like spitting out widgets. Each application needs to be studied and the best design found. If you want a generic pop out then we could do it in a few weeks.
Do you think it is good business sense to decline a $50k or $100k order for a new product to fast track a MX-5 product that has no orders in place. This is the dilemma we are dealing with.

Please I understand your frustration and we will do our best to release this disc earlier, but also inderstand that there are other factors involved.

As far as the Wake up comment is concerned; We have never been more awake and in focus now than ever before. This is why our product is in demand worldwide.
OH! the Mini, We are the biggest after market supplier of the Mini Cooper world wide. We sell them by the pallet load into the U.S and U.K.

Now if someone who has a SP Turbo in Sydney can spare a little time after work to let me check over the car It will definitely speed up the process. I'm here from 5.30am to 9.00pm most days. Email me ASAP.

One more thing!

There's a saying in the manufacturing industry. (Whats left of it)

" The squeaky wheel gets the oil"

Keep on our case with the feedback, good or bad and you'll get the oil.

Steve, I think you'll find that the SP has exactly the same rotors as the standard NB8B...

Sorry SP Turbo Manual which is the 270mm disc.

Yep, exactly the same 270mm disc as fitted to all 2000-2001 NB8B and all Manual 2002 onwards NB8B models

(Auto 2002 onwards have the older NB8A 255mm disc behind a 15 inch wheel)

I think you'll find that the american market had the 255mm disc stock on NB8B's, behind 15in wheels, except for the LS model with the 270mm disc behind 16's...

Steve,

Caffeine's right on the money, here...

SP is identical to Oz delivered NB8B's in every way, apare from the turbo and essentials, such as intercooler and exhaust, and some a/c mods if ticked in the accessories list.

There's only two hundred and seventy-something parts that differ. Brakes are the same.

I also rang DBA today and got the same reply.
My advise. Take up Steves offer and get a car to him pronto.
This is the best way to get fast tracked as your dealing with the guy at the top (engineering wise).:worship:
If you don't ask.....and ask.....and ask....you don't get.

I pester Steve with things all the time...I'm suprised he even writes back some days......LMAO

dbaSteve - thanks for the reply.

The frustration comes from a number of things. Firstly, when our club came to your tech night (August 02), we were assured you had discs for all models which we quickly (on the night) proved was wrong.

Secondly, I replied to a number of emails from your company about the differences in sizes between the US and Oz models around October last year. Thirdly, I have spoken to a number of your people since that tech night about the progress of these rotors and every time I speak to the sales guys I get same crap response, "Oh, it will be a few months at least...." and January became April which became June the other day.

We don't even want a DBA5000 series rotor, just a standard slotted one to replace the OEM's because many of us do track days, skid pan days, motorkhana's etc and want your quality product for our car because we know it's a good product.

I also understand the economic decisions that decide what is produced and when, but as Australia's leading aftermarket rotor manufacturer I would have also believed you have a committment to the market you operate in. As current model MX5 owners, we don't believe we've seen that committment.

For the record, the tech night and tour was excellent, and I have my second set of slotted dba rotors on my falcon hardtop - I just wish I could get them for my faster car - the MX5.

thanks.

How about getting these forum nerdies to fix the spelling on your status.
Unless you are a coffee breaking specialist!:D

I don't get time for coffee breaks
But when I send you the pics of my sports sedan you'll know why its spelt that way

I break lots of things. I have the technical mind to design things but I am no good with my hands.
This might explain why mrsdatto left me recently....sob

On a stock standard disc it's not a good idea!

This is not a stock standard disc :D

We have been using this slot design on our premium discs for quite a while. ;)

I'm sure those O.E disc will give up the ghost soon enough.

April is looking good for this new disc.
You may see some prototypes sooner if you hang around the NSW tracks. I'm organising some decent pads too. Not too expensive I hope, but good quality.

CT
19-02-03, 08:04 AM
dbaSteve - we will be looking forward to what pads you come up with. They have been our other big problem. I have only just managed to source some Ferodo 2500's and I hear a rumour that Racebrakes may even have some backing plates off getting made. Although it's only a rumour.

dbasteve

That's a truemour, Greg (R/Brakes) was here yesterday and is having some pads made.
The DS2500's are excellent pads and is what we recommend for most performance applications.
A pad I am sourcing is the Ferodo Performance pad which is inbetween Bendix Ultimate and DS2500. The price is around the same as Ultimates.
I am also looking into some Pagid compounds.

Sweet!

Looks like I'll have some new pads and some new discs for my triumphant return to the track :D

brian brought his car over for me and we checked out the clearances I wanted to look at.

We're full steam ahead now.
We should have tooling ready for casting trials in about 10 days.
(Ku-ching! $15,000)

I'm pushing for prototypes by late March.

Thanks! Brian for your help.
