View Full Version : Brake Upgrade - Mazda S1 RX7
Hey :)
I have a Series 1 RX7 with a 13B extend port, extractors and exhaust. The person I bought the car off rebuilt and worked the engine but left the stock brakes on. The car is pretty dangerous, the brakes don't do anything..
What can I do about fixing this up?
S1's have small discs on the front and drums on the rear. The brakes have just been overhauled but I was wondering if there's anything else I can do to improve my braking distance. Will Bendix Ultimate pads help? Maybe bigger front discs off a similar car?

Sreies 1 is difficult. Has Graham at Rotomotion got any ideas ?
Maybe S4 4 spot conversion. If it will fit under your wheels.
The prob is that Bendix don't make Ultimates in DB40 shape. EBC doesn't make anything decent either.
You could have a pad cut from some decnt material if your keen to use the orig calipers.
To adapt another rotor you would need a hub to bolt the disc too as the original disc is a hub style. Not to mention the silly wheel PCD......LOL
If it all gets too hard.......and you can get me a dead strut from a wreck I'll take a look at what might be able to be adapted.

If I recall, Rotomotion do an awesome upgrade for the RX7 which includes Magna calipers and Commodore Discs....but its not cheap, and you have to have at least 16" wheels
That sounds like an excuse to get mags. :)
I'll talk to Graham about it next time I have some $$$..
I would buy a series 2 diff, with the lot on it, brakes and all. Then convert it to your car. I would be reasonably cheap conversion and you would have 4 wheel disk brakes. If you are still not happy after that then spend the big bling bling and get the front brakes upgraded.
Whilst you do that get the series 2 diff, get all the 4 brake rotors machined and get some really good quality pads. A series 2 RX7 can have decent braking power if it is done properly.
I am preaty sure that a series 3 diff will be a big head fu.k to convert to so stay with a series 2 diff. I don't know the prices for spare parts where you are but in Brisbane I would not pay any more than $500. A few of my friends have bought them for around $400.
p.s. try and get all the pipe work with the diff, i.e the metal pipe work that goes from the brake fluid reseviour right through underneath the car to the diff (saves a lot of custom piping)
Goodluck.
