HI all, after one realy BIg quick stop...my brakes went to crap, no pedal feel and very little stopping.
Heres what i did:

Bled them...still no good
CHanged master cylinder(original was std 11/16 and FARKED...full of rust and yukies, replaced with a used but cleaned out an in ok looking condidition 2 door galant 13/16)

Well anywho got that all in and bled ect...was crap for half day...felt as if I didnt bleed brakes right.
Then they come good...then bad, then good....this went on for two days...often i had to pump pedal few times before they worked ok.

Today i bled them again and very well, went for a drive and they were crap, but after one pump of pedal they were awesome....then after some stuffing around found out that when pedal has no feel an loads of travel the front brakes still lockup...but car brakes like crap, after another pump it brakes great.

So im guessing somethings wrong with the rear, but i cant work out why the pedal feels so soft when the rears arnt working!
Or why pumping the pedal would make them work?

All i can think of is the brake porportioning valve...but wouldnt this blockup and leave me with a very heavy pedal?

Any ideas?
For anyone unfamilair with the brakes ive got 13/16 master cylinder, no power assist, front sigma girlock calipers on solid 256mm rotors, and rear drums(cant think of size atm)

Cheers Karl

I'm making the wild assumption that early Galants have the same rear brake setup as early Lancer's. The auto adjusting ratchet mechanism wears out and you loose your adjustment when you hit the brakes hard. Light use of the brakes will slowly bring it back, but they will go again when you hit the brakes hard.

I never found a decent set of adjusters, so I changed over the complete brake assembly to Sigma drums, all you need to do to fit them is slot the mounting holes for the backing plates as the lancer one has a smaller PCD. To do it properly you will also need a bigger master cylinder, I never got around to changing this before I took the car off the road, so I just put up with the longer pedal travel.

Yea galant and lancer are very similair...ide think about the same.

The adjuster your talking about...whats it look like...is there any way to remove/lock it.

Ive got a parts car so i might just have a good set...and the symptoms are the same....i notice that when they came good after braking hard they went crap again.

Much thanks :D

The easy way to describe it , is two toothed bits of metal that lock in to each other.

The handbrake does the adjustment, so if they go soft, pull the handbrake up a couple of time to see if it gets better.

The only way I could see you fixing it, is to weld the plates together, very dodgy. I would recomend the Sigma brakes, only takes a few hours to swap everything over.

I think i know what you mean..but i think its master cylinder problem actually.

Getting seals in next few days....

As for the handbrake thing it dosnt help, infact my handbrake is useless.

Hoonboy...your correct.

Although my master cylinder was also stuffed...getting one re-sleeved and new seals.

So far looking at droping another diff in...what sigma drums did you use???

Karl, I have no idea what model they where from, I did it a couple of years ago and it was only a temporary setup.
