View Full Version : Recomendations on tiny little 4" splits
Hey there, I've setup the sound system in my Charger. Now, I've got an average sound happening with low range 4" Pioneer speakers 4" in the factory location (kick panels) mounted on spacers, but want to upgrade to some higher quality splits. It panned out that it was too difficult to put in speaker pods/boxes so I've had to stick with the standard size speaker.
I've had Schneider's $150 setup recommended, has anyone used another brand that they can recommend in this size?
I'm going to seal inside the (small) cavity so there are no air leaks, my problem is lower mid range reproduction (say upto 150Hz). At the moment it is obvious all of the bass is coming from the sub at the back (even with it tuned so that the overall levels sound right... ) and I'd like to hide this.
I just realised I posted this question a few months ago.
If it's new to some people, great, else if you've already answered - sorry.
Talk about retarded. :)

drop in some 61/2" speakers or some 8" woofers tuned 2 suit
And fit them where?
Do you really think I'd be asking about 4" speakers if there was any other way?
"It panned out that it was too difficult to put in speaker pods/boxes so I've had to stick with the standard size speaker."
I've got a pair of boston 4" splits which I was very happy with in the charade - as you say though the midbass is not strong at all with 4" splits. There's no way around this. You MAY get slightly better results with a ported kickpanel but your chances of designing this correctly are slim to none given the volumes and spaces involved.
Unless there's room to add a bigger speaker say a midbass driver in the door (*watches charger fanatics recoil in horror*), or something under the dash, you're pretty much stuck with tuning the sub (what is it? hopefully no bigger than a 10! you should even have something in between a 10 and a 4 if possible). I had 6x9's crossed over to about 80Hz on my rear shelf and you could tell the bass came from the back but if you tuned it a little to get the volumes right it wasn't as noticeable.

I have some VDO Dayton 4" splits at the moment, and before that had the Jaycar 4" splits with titanium tweeter, and have been happy with both of them so far...
I had some cheaper Pionneer ones before that and they sucked...
Thanks guys, I've been considering whether I could put in 6" speakers in the rear, cross them over and play around with volumes... but the less I cut up the better. The holes exist in the rear panels but I don't want to kill the original trim which is all quite good.
Kinks, it's a 10" sub.
Maybe 2 quality 8" subwoofers firing upwards underneath each seat isntead of the single 10 in the boot would hide it a little better? (Chris Rogers, if you read this - there's room under the seats, but not in front to fire a speaker into the footwell...there's a 2" hump and also the position adjuster gets in the way :( ). Or even maybe 2 6x9s in premade boxes, angled forward as much as poss?
Demuire - I'm glad there's some light at the end of the tunnel, these Pioneers are shite. Did the difference lie only in quality, or is bass reproduction slightly better too?
There's a huge difference in quality with better speakers. Some people can't hear it, some can.
I'm not sold on 6x9's if you want decent grunt behind them, perhaps go with 6-6.5" woofers in a ported box under each seat, facing forward. That'll fill the footwells with the low end - remember to cross them over so they're ONLY doing bass duties tho.
6 6.5" woofers under each seat? That's a lot of speakers. ;)
What brand are they? What colour? :)
"6 to 6 and a half inch woofers"
where "to" means "between" :)

I'm not an audiophile, but I can definately hear the difference with my VDO Dayton speakers (and the Jaycar ones I had before) vs the crummy old Pioneer ones, and even worse the one that came with the car. Sound reproduction across the range particularly in the bass area was much better, clearer, crisper. In fact being 4" speakers I didn't expect them to sound that good at all.
I've got 6x9's in the back, and an 8" shite bass tube in the boot and the sound in my car is fairly decent considering how much I've spent on my sound system ($250 all up - I already had the headunit (dodgy old Pioneer one that's stuffed), and the bass tube ($100 from Supercheap), all this is including the MDF and carpet I got to make the custom speaker pods in the back and kickpanels in the front. I got the speakers cheap cause the shop was closing down.

Way to go Fook :) Looks great for a budget install. I'm running a Kenwood tape deck (top of the line with remote, though) circa 1995, stacker (got it cheap for $200 odd on sale) and the most money I've spent I guess is in the Kicker amp... and I've always done the installs.
I've pulled apart that deck a few times now, and no matter what I do I cannot break it. So I'm leaving it to die a long and painful death.
I can't afford $2000 systems... :)
Thanks for your thoughts on this, looks like I'll get some nice 4" jobs and run some 6" split woofers I've already got underneath the seats.
cheers,
Adrian

Heh, cool :) Woofers under the seats would give some nice rumble :) I think the main hole in my system is my bass tube, it truly sucks. If I had the cash I'd much rather buy a proper amp and maybe 10" sub...
My problem at the moment is the (massive) boot area resonates a fair bit with any serious amount of bass, other than that there is absolutely no hole up to about 110hz (amp crossover). But the little cones need to do their jobs a bit better..
Dude I have a spare 10" Jaycar response single voice coil mit carbon fibre cone, and it hasn't been used for 2 years. I'll be up in Brissy hopefully in a few weeks if I get some cash sorted out... if you want we could swap your old Jaycar splits for my sub if you've still got them.. ?
I also have a JBL 8" sub, GT series from around 1997 or something. It's still fine, might be an alright thing to shove in your bass tube but I'd have to test it first. I've had it hooked up to many things, it's currently in a small hifi speaker enclosure with a bass port sealed up with gaffa tape, was perfect for outdoor BBQ occassions, and it's been subjected to strange audio experiments around the house etc. :)
Hmm, maybe the Jaycar would be better. :)

Hmm, unfortunately I sold the Jaycar speakers with the car (along with the rest of the system - I REALLY regret that...)
But if you want to sell your Jaycar sub I may be interested :) My bass tube unfortunately is a prebuilt unit (sealed plastic thing) so I don't think I'd be able to change the speaker in it. Hmm, pity...
No worries dude, hey $40 would do it. :)
I'm trying to get out of "hoard mode" at the moment, realising I have all this unused stuff around. :)
I'll bring everything up, Chris wants the JBL, LV wants my spare brake pads..

Heh, I know what you mean (*me looks at his 22 wheels and 1 car...*)
$40 should be happy :) Now I need to buy an amp and more MDF... Any idea what the power rating etc is on the sub is? So if I'm lucky I can take advantage of the end-of-financial year sales :p
From memory 150WRMS?
It was quite happy running bridged off a Kicker 4x40WRMS amp (that amp may be underrated) in a sealed box.
omg, 10" carbon response? fook you bastard, i would have taken it if you hadn't beaten me to it. :)
Oh well, nothing for it but to put a 12" carbon in my car I spose
the 10" carbons were a good woofer, and jaycar don't sell em any more :(

They don't? Hmm, pity... Does anyone know what size box a 10" sub should have (sealed)? I used to have a formula somewhere but can't find it anywhere anymore... Just trying to plan where I'm going to build the box into...
depends on the T/S parameters of the driver. I don't have them on hand unfortunately... maybe try google.. unlikely tho

Gti6 i have some JBL something or others in 4" in the doors of my galant. The deliver pretty descent sound considering there just running off the headunit.
I find my free air sub setup is great with two 8" mounted onto a 18mm MDF directly behind the backseat faced forward. Sounds better than any other systems my friends have, an i think its due to the free air setup. Could be a good idea for the charger...an forget about speakers in the rear, with some bass from the boot an some OK front speakers itl sound good.
You dont have the "Big tank" option to stop u from going free air subs in the boot(cos if u do i hate u!:) )
Haha, no big tank option but I need one! :)
Dude I was wanting to stick with my 10" sealed sub... there's lots of nice bass coming in, and I can almost hide the fact it's coming from the rear, so basically the front needs reinforcement with better splits, then perhaps some of my spare 6" drivers under the seats for more midbass.
I've also recently discovered, with the front seats back trim removed, that some Jaycar Aura shakers would fit perfectly in there (not the individual ones, the ones embedded in a foam pack).
That'll give it some more rumble too. :)
BTW, I tried mounting some of these in my Impreza, bolted underneath into the seat chassis. Do not mount these underneath your bum. It feels rude. :)

Ah, managed to find the 10" carbon fibre cone woofer in the 2000 Jaycar catalog :) 35Lt sealed box volume :)
