Hello, i'm hoping someone can help me out with a problem i'm having with a landcruiser.

The rear drum brake shoes are wearing unevenly. The top half of the shoe where the cylinder pushes on has worn down to metal almost, whereas the bottom half of the shoe is almost brand new.

The landcruiser is one of the extended wheelbase models so very long and tall. Not sure if this has anything to do with it but the brakes seem inadequate.

Is there a problem with the shoes wearing this way or normal?
Here is a pic...

Or what options are there converting it to rear disc brakes? Or is there such thing as drums with 2 slave cylinders, top and bottom, not just the top?

Thanks
Joel

Landcruisers with drum brakes on the front had dual wheel cylinders on the rear.

Looks to me as if you have shagged (oversize) drums and standard shoes.

Measure the drum ID it should be 295mm for standard shoes. 296.5mm for first oversize shoes.
Any larger than 297 and its off to buy some new ones.

If you want disc rear just fit the diff from a HZJ75 with rear disc option. Plenty of these wrecked around.

Hi mate, many thanks for this info!

With those 2 upgrade options..

Would the HKZ75 rear diff be a bolt in job, or would it require cutting/welding suspension mounts etc?

Also, with the landcruise that had twin slave cylinders in the drums.. Would that be a bolt on job or require mods?

Thanks!
Joel

I don't know what model you have.

HZJ75 rear diff probably bolts right in though

Going back to early 2 cyl backing plate wouldn't be ideal. Needs different master cylinder too.

We looked at the idea of a later disc brake rear end drop in Dattoman.
It can be done with a few bracket mods etc.
No one we discussed the conversion with went ahead with it, but as you say we also tell customers to upgrade the master cylinder
