View Full Version : Q-Ride day one down!

Well guys, took the day off work and did Q-ride. Even though I've ridden before (only a few times, and about 300 years ago), I decided to do the full two-day 'helpless beginner' course just to be 200% sure.

I didn't really learn much, as most of it is common sense - and that which isn't I had mostly picked up by riding pillion and reading bike mags over the years.

The thing is, being forced to spend hours on the bike doing ridiculous repetitive moves does wonders for your confidence. Even simple things like re-learning to stop a bike without looking like a twat took a little bit of practising, and this session did wonders.

Most of the day was practical, but with a bit of government-slanted information/theory here and there. Towards the end we headed out onto the road - you know that exhilarating feeling when you're doing something (or indeed someone, as the case may be :D) new? Great fun!

Good to get a few miles up on the road, and look forward to doing the second day (on the weekend probably) - although it will be a bit repetitive as it's 90% the same but on a slightly bigger bike. I could have passed with a single day, but I think the second day of silly manouvres will be of benefit in the long run.

leigh,

do it in 4 days not two. you will learn more. the final test comes and they teach you to do obsatcle avoidance.

nothing like getting a witches hat thrown in front of you when you arent expecting it.

The place I'm going through has a one full-day course or a two full-day course... already paid in advance. I want to get out on the road, do some basic riding and then go to another place and do an advanced course once my general skills are up to a slightly higher level.

It would be ideal to do it all at once, but I just don't think that a 4 day course will provide me with enough practice to make full use of what I'm being taught.

All in good time :)

NB: didn't quiktrak go into liquidation?

Yeah, I want to go and do some more advanced courses. Particularly emergency braking....

You don't need a course for that... come out to QR on a public testing day and you lap one direction and I'll lap the other direction... Every time we meet, you get to practice emergency stopping and accident avoidance.

Mate of mine stacked his bike at QR last weekend, turn 3 from memory... lowsided onto the grass at like 60km/h due to over-application of the throttle at full lean, so it has very little damage, but will probably still cost $1.5k to fix (fairing paint and small amount of plastic welding, windscreen replacement, gearshift, left footpeg and LHS switchgear are about it). Didn't notice anyone going the wrong way though... :D

Good stuff Leigh, you doing the unrestricted test?

Chris, you had witches hats thrown at you? Gawd, they didn't do that to me... mind you I had to avoid some woman who pulled out of a shopping centre and nearly cleaned me up on my test so I think I scored brownie points there :p

Hell, I thought mine was only a small accident. Damage to left hand side. Monster, so no fairings. But the quote came back at $4389!!

Luckily, mine was on the road so insurance will pick up the tab.

Oh, and thanks for the offer Adam, but I'll have to pass for now. ;)

Fark, thats no good at over 4 grand!!!

Well, if/when i ever crash its gonna be costly. full faired bike with no insurance. So i'm up for $2k for fairings as soon as its layed over.

Good stuff Leigh, you doing the unrestricted test?

Less "doing" and more "done" in my case! Did the second day today, now all I have to do is take my certificate into QLD Transport and I have my R license :)

I had to avoid some woman who pulled out of a shopping centre and nearly cleaned me up on my test so I think I scored brownie points there

Same thing here, I had someone in a soft-roader pull about 1m out of a residential street in front of me. Small evasive mavouvre and a bit of a glare saw me retain right-of-way :)

Did mine through RIDESMART - the website is www.ridesmart.com.au I think... or something very similar!

Worst thing I had while on Q-Ride is I slowed to avoid a taxi who saw me who then proceeded to pull out infront of the instructor who beeped him - taxi driver unhappy yells abuse while screeching off: Me 1 Instructor 0

Yeah rusty seeing the pics from that was pretty bad! Makes ya think a bit more before trying ot keep up with a group of experienced riders let me tell ya
