View Full Version : Riding Out of Class?

I want to know what happens if I ride a bike that is outside the restrictions placed on L and P platers?
Is this riding without the correct license or just like driving a truck on a car only license? And what are the penalties, etc??
I just wanted to know this. Don't ask why.
Cheers

I guess I will do that. Didn't know it would be that bad tho.
Not sure of the actual fine, make a call to the police and ask the question. I have done that before.
One advantage to the ACT laws is that it is a power to weight thing so you can ride some 5/600 cc bikes leagally on your L/Ps so if the cop isnt clued up you might get away with it. But that doesnt help if you are asking because you got caught...

Asking cause I want to get something that is more than 150kw per tonne. Like an R6 or something. Not quite sure yet.
But in anycase I was just wondering. I don't think most coppers would know what bike there were looking at anyway.
I doubt you would get away with a R6 as it is kind of obvious that it is over. Have you riden bikes before?

Trail bikes only. Of road nothing on the road except for scooters but they don't count.
There is a large difference between riding off road and on road. It might be benefical to ride something a little more sedaite than a R6 for a while until you build up the on road skills. I have my full unrestricted license but hadnt ridden for several years. So I got a ZZR250 and have been riding that for the last year. I am glad I did, cause I feel a lot more comfortable riding on the road. But the time has come to get something bigger. :-)
Some rules I can see the merit behind and this is one.
My 2 cents
Don't know if this helps, this is the NSW RTA... It lists the legal bikes, it may have what penalties are??
But where is the CBR250RR??????

Edit: Didn't read it properly, now I get it :)

just to add my 2 cents worth.....i was picked up for this here in SA years ago and i lost my L's but got them back on appeal. The thing that shits me is that I was riding a Yamaha TT350 which had a top speed of about 90km and the mate i was with (whom was also on his L's) was riding an RGV250 which we all all know is capable of near on 200km....so there ya go, Cheers
the rta have a bike and kw listing the police are carrying the list to. be careful
buy a KR-1S in the ACT. fastest thing on the 'list'. It probably shouldn't be as it doesnt actually meet the kw/tonne rule, but they don't care because its on the 'list,' whereas RGV / 250RS aren't, and its exactly the same thing. Mental powerband should keep you excited for a while, as good as a 600 up to 140km/h or so, and nuts in the twisties.
(actually KR had a squidge more power compared to similar year efforts from suzuki/aprilia)
Any 2-stroke 250 road bike isn't permitted under the LAMS scheme with the exception of the RG250 that I know of. KR-1's are not permitted for Learner permit holders.
If you are super keen to get something with a bit more poke, fork out and get an RVF400. They have around 60hp, Upside Down Forks, good brakes and a nice looking single sided swingarm. Plus V4's with a nice exhaust sound horn (Yes I am biased about that too). An RVF400 is learner legal but goes through the twisties very nicely and is still good for a mid 12 second quarter if straight line poke is what youre after.
Personally I think the fine should be equivalent to driving without a license. Quite simply, you don't have a license to ride that bike and that's that...

Is the RVF400 an old bike? This is an import as in not sold new in Oz?
I saw some that said they were 2004 compliance for about $7,000

Just taking a wild stab at it, but wouldn't your insurance be void if you're at fault riding a bike you're not licenced to ride?
And I dare say that if you are at fault, your insurance company is going to try everything they can to avoid paying up. Especially if its a big f*ck-off payment for killing/maming someone.

Crab Bait, that would be safe to assume, yes.
Seriously, there isn't a learner legal bike that is going to get anywhere close to the big bikes in top speed, and if thats not what you're after, you probably don't need a 600cc + sports bike in any case. I'd follow FoMoCo's call and just buy a 250cc 4-stroke and save the rest for an upgrade in a year's time.
RVF400's were in production from 94-97 or something like that. Not exactly sure but mid 90's. So they are newer than all the import 250's you see around.

not sure bout act, but in vic its a 500 fine for riding say a 600 on ur p's.

you know somebody who has been pinged?
cause i know a few people who have been busted in the last 6-12 months and the fine was $105 with no loss of points/licence.
if the cop was in a really bad mood they would make you push the bike home, and if they caught you riding it again later that day/night they could put you in a cell for the night
not displaying a plate in vic is definately a 3 point fine, but if you have a full car licence and just have your restrictions left you dont have to display a plate any way
i got till feb and im on a 1990 gsxr750

Anyone know the penalties in QLD?
I need to talk some sense into a completely deranged mate of mine who's just got his Ps (restricted to 250cc) and went and bought a Yamaha R1...

yeah...a friend of mine was done for riding a 600 on his p's..or his l's..cant remember which. but it was 500 n no points. the cop was kind enough not to get him for not displaying plates but ive been warned bout it. my L plate was ripped up by the back wheel n the cop at the booze bus gave me a warning. ive also been pulled over n given another warning for not displayin p plates..said it was 3pts!
yes that u dont need to display p if u got ur fulls but u r still on restrictions for 12months from wen u got ur lic.

seems you're right, however it appears they've removed it. It definately was on there when I did it, I even carried a copy of the list under the rear seat. (couple to several years ago now :) Oh well, it WAS the pick of the bunch.

A trip to the morgue, to show him what 2 motorcyclists heading north at 200kmph hitting a rider heading south at 130kmph would probably suffice.
I'd say your mate is a wanker for going and buying an R1 straight up, but when you consider someone who has been on their opens (this is qld anyway) for a while can go out and do the same thing, with exactly the same amount of riding experience, its a bit retarded really.
Is he deranged in general? Or just for the R1 purchase?

anyone know the legalities in wa ? or know where i can findout legalites/consequence of gettin caught riding over 250cc bike on l's ?
You'd be lucky to get the fine and loss of licence. All the people I've seen ride a bike outside their permitted class killed themselves on it!

There is a reason for these limitations...people die on bikes with incredible ease.
I for one am doing the right thing and sticking to bikes that fit my riding experience.

personally i think most anything in the 600cc range is an ideal first bike (tho preferably not brand spaking new). if your not too bad with common sense and have been driving a car for at least 2 or 3 years then your a shoe in
a litre straight off would be a little silly tho. besides, not many bikes to go to for an upgrade once your sick of 1000cc
It is a bit harder to learn on a more powerful bike, still plenty of power to overshoot a corner, get bad headshake getting on the gas too early or get sucked in by the power and get in trouble with the fuzz. Its been said many times before but riding the tits off a lower powered bike helps you sus out the basic dynamics of a motorcycle without too great a risk of getting spat off. A mate of mine's first bike was a Ducati 748, but I was able to absolutely chernobyl him through corners on my ZZR250 because it was a docile bit of kit and I was quite aware of what I could and couldnt do on it. He was on this sharp handling, powerful thing and as a result he couldnt test its limits without scaring himself silly. Now I am not saying this will be the case for every rider but in my experience people who start off slow tend to have better roadcraft then those who go big straight away.
