Red Bull owner confirms buying of Jaguar team

The company behind the Austrian energy drink Red Bull has taken over the Jaguar formula one team from Ford, Red Bull's owner told an Austrian newspaper yesterday.

"It is true, we bought Jaguar Racing at the weekend," Red Bull's owner Dietrich Mateschitz was quoted as saying by Salzburger Nachrichten.

Mateschitz's comments confirmed media speculation that a deal had been reached in time for this evening's deadline for entries to the 2005 championship. He did not say how much Red Bull had paid.

Ford have spent about $2m (£1.07m) a week keeping the team operational since the season ended last month. Jaguar could manage only seventh in the constructors' championship with 10 points.

The takeover should secure the future of the Milton Keynes-based team, which employs 300 staff, and end talk of other formula one teams having to run three cars next year to make up the numbers on a depleted grid.

Mateschitz said he could not provide job guarantees but added that he had no plans to change the team's leadership in the short term.

Asked whether the team would sign the Austrian driver Christian Klien, who made his formula one debut with Jaguar last season, Mateschitz said: "Like other drivers, he will come to testing as of late November. But it is true that a second season for Christian after his debut would make sense."

The Red Bull owner hinted that there would be further changes in the long term. The new team will use a Cosworth engine this season because there is too little time to make changes to the car's design. "But I can imagine a change in 2006," he said
