That's rough.....remember, one door closes and another opens.
Happened to me in March mate, it's turned out good, i've got a way better job now. It was a bit of a journey getting to where i'm at now though.

Jim, you know what you need to do- Move to Mosman, buy a subaru, get masses of gumbyment and company funding for ADG, and never work again... just write smart arsed email replies to people... and get in the media for stuff unrelated to the ADG!..;)
best of luck with the new job hunt mate... hope it goes well...

Jim, bummer...you know what they always say, everything happens for a reason and like Rhys a better job will come along. Well that AAMI payout should keep you busy on some renovations at home over the XMAS & New Year Break.
Paul, you will also be happy to hear...this is my final week at work. I've declined to continue on next year and looking forward to returning home. Wooohooo!!!
Secoh ... poo.
But I have a story exactly the same as Rhys; and it does seem a common thing to hear too. :) [And who knows, you too could be driving around in your very own new Tarago in the next few months! :D]
Evo_Lee ... hmm, Smurfalicious! There's a private-import involved isn't there? Will be interesting to hear of the things you miss from over there, as well as the things here you'd forgotten that you didn't miss ...

Paul, 2nd week of Jan I will be in Sydney...so pencil in a day.
Forg, why of course but I'm not looking forward to the insurance they're gonna ass rape me with. Wonder if I can present my insurance history from Japan to prove an accident free record for the last 5years or 10+ years if you include before I left.
I will certainly miss Japan for alot of things even though there is as many thing I dislike about the place...but it's the same with every country. Single biggest thing I will miss is of course safety for sure, but my place was broken into earlier this year. Kids me think looking for money, as nothing was taken...my notebook, digi cam, MD and $500 worth of US travellers cheques were just sitting on the coffee table...maybe the TC written in English confused them ;). If you want to hear stories I have many :).
Actually this also makes me another looking for a job, anyone seeking an experienced Rail engineer.
Troy, i can put you in touch with a few people mate... ;)
Jim - Shit mate, that's bad news, i feel for you dude... Keep your eyes and ears open for opportunities to get in with RailCorp. It's a lot better than you might think and the scope for career development is huge... ;)
I'll keep an eye out for you... You'd want to stay in Newcastle though right ??
thanks everyone! Paul, yeah I'd like to stay in Newie but I'll travel up to 40-50 minutes in any direction.
I'm not stressed......yet.... though it means I'm guaranteed to be at the WTFBBQ!!11!
I thought of going "scruby" but I don't know if I could live with myself...LOL

Paul, thanks will hook up when I get back.
Might be a good thing, I heard recently Railcorp is abandoning Stage 2 and 3 of the OSCars in favour of a new contract the 5GT adding single decks as well. I would assume to service the greater city area and suburbs. IMO this is a very wise way to go for cost saving and leaving the double decks to service OS.
I have not seen the Technical Requirement yet, still in the tender stage. If indeed the single decks are servicing the greater city area, then I hope the design is for 3 or 4 doors/side/car for greater traffic flow and using plastic longitudinal seats. Seating will be reduced but access is improved, plastic may not be comfortable but passengers will not be standing or riding for long. Also such seats will help reduce the chance of little shits vandalising them.
PS. Mass transit Metros are my speciality ;)
Jim, how about it? :)
Not good Jim, will have some beers on the weekend and convince you to move to brisbane.

Secoh: I was in a similar position as you just 3 months ago mate. But I am in a much better job now and doing well. Getting retrenched etc. is just like your parents kicking you out of house...it's just a sign/motivation for you to move on to bigger better things. You'll be right mate.

What a Christmas present!!! that's a bummer. Anyway, think of it as an extended Christmas holiday. Unfortunately this time of the year, not many companies employ people unless the companies are really desparate for bodies. My brother who's just come back from HK is looking for job (Mech Engineering)... but you should be right. I think looking for a job isn't that hard. It's the RIGHT kind of job that is the hardest to get.
Troy, I agree on the security. Being there for such a short time already made me feel like Sydney is a dangerous place to live compared to Tokyo. I think Sydney siders need to have a meet up or something.
I thought of going "scruby" but I don't know if I could live with myself...LOL
You could always just go murder him? I hear you jail pays well

Free sex too which is an aspect many of you here will find attractive.
Shouldn't be too hard in this current job market. Take a chill until Jan. '05.

thats gotta suck.
i was made redundant in 2001, and they gave me basically a years salary..
best of luck
Redundancy sucks ass.......been there done that :(
Best of luck re. the payout etc. What did they claim the reason was for not paying it?
If it's not a redundancy, are they claiming they terminated your employment? Or that you chose to leave???
Edit: kula - I wish that could have happened to me :D

Jim, so can we ban you now ;)
Actually come over for that Japan trip you keep putting off. Come for a couple of weeks, I'm free as of this Friday till end of the month for packing.
If ya want we can organise some of the more robust members come down and visit.
companies with less than 15 employees are not required to pay any kind of redundancy as it turns out.
I'm not game to spend the money on a jap trip unfortunately :(
