Comment
Tim Newton (Test Team Manager, WilliamsF1):
“The track at Barcelona has recently been re-surfaced and today marked its first official test session. The new asphalt was considerably slippery for Mark and Antonio on their initial outings but grip level gradually started to improve with the continual laying of rubber. There are some bumpy parts on the track but we are in discussion with the circuit management regarding these problem areas.

We won’t be able to commence work on tyre testing until we’ve clocked up some more miles and laid some more rubber on the track. We’ll continue in this vein over the next couple of days and hope for some more productive testing as the week progresses.“

Nick Heidfeld will join Mark Webber tomorrow.

I don't think you can read too much into lap times in testing. Wasn't so long ago everyone thought Williams & Mclaren had caught up with Ferrari based on winter test times, only for Ferrari to come out & blitz everybody in Melbourne.

oh well, third place is like a win behind the Ferraris :)

The fast lap in the Ferrari was 2004 spec.
2005-spec was a fair chunk slower.

Comment
Tim Newton (Test Team Manager, WilliamsF1):
“Mark and Nick were on duty for the team today and recorded the quickest times of the session this morning. However, a technical problem with the suspension put an early end to the day’s schedule. The guys at the factory are currently investigating the problem, as soon as they have rectified the situation we will be back on track.“

Antonio Pizzonia will join Nick Heidfeld tomorrow.

so obviously that 1:14.xx that schuey did was on vapours or some extremely experimental (illegal) tyre. sort of a show who's boss kinda effort. especially seeing as it was his first drive in what 4 months?.....

green track would be slower btw - less grip.

It is going to be a better season one way or the other this year- especially for us Aussies.

Wish it was Melbourne time now!!!

All these changes were supposed to slow the cars down a lot more than this. We'll be back to 2004 speed by the end of this season!

Cplus, on the ferrari f1 website it says it was a 2004 spec car (like Nafe said). I don't know why they were testing with that at all. must have had some '05 bits on it.
