Last weekend Toyota opened the F1 headquarters in Cologne to raise money for tsunami victims.
Here are some excellent photos from the event:

bigmuz, it doesn't allow hotlinking I don't think. post a link.

See the catia CAD photo? thats some superior German engineering right there :)

If you look at the photo of the engine airbox (F1 engine 4) exposed, it doesn't look awfully refined in there :)

You'd have thought they'd have used something fancier than zip ties...

Fair enough, but slight adjustments to the injector positioning are critical when using squirters like these- It is probably a development intake anyways- wouldn't behoove them to show the world their state of the art?

If V8 Supertaxi guys hide theirs, you can only imagine the secretiveness (is that a word!!) in F1!

Couple of things I'd like an explanation on....

All of the turbo's, rally car and gt-one, have very small intake pipes, yes they are contoured, but very small, I always would have asumed bigger is better. And the rally motor seems to have an internal wastegate, I would have thought they'd have much better control and spool time if it was a external.

The other thing was the intakes, which you guys already seemed to be talking about. It's hard to know what is in the actual intake pipe that comes down from above the drivers head and if something goes down to direct the airflow, but I'm thinking it doesn't. But to me that is so messy inside the plenum. I would have thought nice clean smooth surfaces, not zip ties, fuel rails and the like sticking everywhere for the air to get tangled (for want of a better word) in.

If you look at this pic (sorry can't link, hope it works) http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/frame.php?file=pic.php&imagenum=6&carnum=2018 the new V10 M5 engine has definite intakes inside the plenum for each cylinder.

I'm confused....Anybody help?

Governed by regulation. Both grpa/wrc rally and lemans prototype classes are intake restricted by FIA.

Remember that intake is pressurised at high speed so perhaps there is more than enough airflow inside there. That intake has intakes for each cylinder too but they are extremely short to suit 19000rpm!
I can't answer why it is messy inside there..!

Kev = forgetful shit.....

Of course the bloody restrictors!

Can somebody help zac and I understand the messyness??

Catia rocks :D used that during my very short stint designng dunnies and bits and pieces at Caroma in Adelaide.

VL/VN Grp A commodores had trumpets inside like the M5 too. Intake length is directly related to RPM and torque yes? well point of max torque anyway?

it can be as messy as it like pre bellmouth. the flow direction will be controlled past the intake point. once past that it's another kettle of fish however - it would be as smooth and direct with little or no potusions.

*Possibly* the "messyness" would help in some strange way anyway, introducing some very turbulent (and hence mixed) air stream as it enters the bellmouth. i'd say this isn't on purpose, but an added bonus? maybe....

Like I posted earlier- I would be surprised if their mega dollar developments were on display.

This is probably the second or third intake, and now they are up to number 200!

Injectors like these need adjusting to squirt in exactly the right place- hence you need to make them adjsutable on a test bed- I bet on the race car they are all neat and tidy..

But I bet you never get to see those pics!!!

id say the use of zipties is just for simplicitys sake.
the entire engine/injector loom is replaced after every race , so it doesnt need anything special to hold it in place.
