Williams uncovered their new FW27 car today.

The underside of the nose is raised high to help airflow off the back of the front wing. This is inline with the regulation raising of front wing by 50mm.

Feck those are some big sidepod chimneys. Otherwise the car looks good, typically Williams understated (except for that whole tusk thing last year). I hope Dernie and Bigois did a good job on the aero.........
Yes they are big. Most other 2005 cars, Sauber especially, have 'gills' down the top of the sidepods to extract that air. Williams had the gills last year but this year seem to have chosen not to use them. Then again, if it is hot in Melbourne they might use a combination of both.

I was lucky enough to goto Hockinheim one year and I assure it it was a sea of red, with Mercedes running second....
The amount of red there was truely amazing to see.
Nick Heidfeld announced as Mark Webber's team-mate

Valencia, 31 January 2005. The BMW WilliamsF1 Team today confirmed that Nick Heidfeld has been appointed as a team race driver to partner Mark Webber for the 2005 season. The appointment was confirmed at the launch of the team's new car in Valencia. Antonio Pizzonia has also been retained by the team in the position of official test and reserve driver.
The announcement follows an extensive evaluation process that commenced in November 2004, and saw Heidfeld and Pizzonia test for 12 full days each.
The announcement, together with today's launch of the Williams BMW FW27,
focuses the team's preparations for the season which commences on March 6,
2005 in Melbourne.
On the confirmation of his appointment, Nick Heidfeld said, "I really wanted this job. Driving for the BMW WilliamsF1 Team is the greatest opportunity of my career. I will do everything I can to show that I deserve this place and I'm counting the days to the first Grand Prix. 'Racing' against Antonio was a lot of fun. He's a great team-mate. I respect him and I would also have taken on the job of test driver."
BMW WilliamsF1 Team Principal Frank Williams commented, "It wasn't an easy
decision for us to make, and there was little to choose between the two of them, and we were in the fortunate position to be able to choose between two drivers who would be a credit to any Formula One team. Ultimately, however, it is Nick who has got our vote, but I am delighted that we have strength in depth with Antonio taking up the position of official test and reserve driver."
BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen said, "All three drivers were very strong in the most recent tests - not only behind the wheel but also when working together with the engineers. The new team has grown together quickly and harmoniously. I'm very pleased for Nick. He earned the seat with his strong performance. Antonio knows that, as a test driver, he is also taking on a key role in the team."
Antonio Pizzonia said, "I'm a racing driver and naturally I would rather be racing in all the Grands Prix. But in the past I have also learnt how important test work is for the success of the team as a whole. I also know as official reserve driver that you have to be ready to step into a race seat at any time. Although it is not the decision I wanted, I'm pleased to be part of the BMW WilliamsF1 Team in 2005 and will give my best to help the team's performance this year."
Thank God Webber got the team mate he would have wanted!!

I have supported Jag for the last couple of years whilst Webber has been there but now following him to Williams.... Does that make me a turncoat?

It's not that weird when you look at it in context of the 2005 regs. Take a look at the new BAR and Ferrari front wings......

If you squint/take the right drugs, the nose looks reminiscent of the Brabham BT55. Same colour scheme too.
i wonder when they will take those silly grooves out of the tires and take away the front and rear wing? .. and make them sit 5cm+ off the tarmac.
i reckon its ugly. the cars are growing so many ridiculous fins theyre starting to look like scorpion fish.
It does almost look like the bt55.. Murray loved the low sidepods.
More recently, the nose reminds me of the '96 Ferrari.
rusty, they will remove the grooves when they get a single tyre manufacturer, which Mosley openly wants.
The wings are mostly about the image of F1 these days. While the wings constribute an amount of downforce, the undercarriage and diffuser contribute a significant amount too. If the wings were removed, by the law of physics aerodynamics wouldn't become any less important.
thats why i said lift it to 5cm+ clearance too.
an additional benefit would be that more of the research into underbody diffuser and related aerodynamics that would subsequently take place, would then be applicable to road cars.

THe nose reminds me of a mclaren...very thin.
A flat bottomed car 5cm off the ground will still create an aerodynamic effect.
Plus, people not familiar with the technical aspect of F1 will just think the cars look 'silly'!
either open slather (manufacturer) on tyres, or single tyre manufacturer.
This bizzo of bridgestone for Ferrari and crap tyre for everyone else is rubbish.
Bridgestone give the same tyres, they are just tailored to Ferrari's needs as Ferrari do the bulk of Bridgestone's testing......who else will they give it to? Jordan? Minardi? Sauber (prior to their switch)?

If I was cynical I would say Sauber are doing Ferrari's Michelin tyre testing, in preparation for Bridgestone pulling out of F1.
Claude Rouelle reckoned that Bridgestone weren't making tyres specifically for Ferrari, but cos Ferrari had spent so much time and money giving them feedback on the tyres, they just naturally headed that way. So the tyre is getting better for everyone at the same time.
He said that he thought the Ferrari tyre engineers were an order of magnitude more clued up on exactly what the tyre is doing than anyone else. In his opinion the rest of the car was pretty much the same as anyone elses.
So they can put the tyre in exactly the right position at the right time to make the most grip.

Well they weren't making tyres specifically for Ferrari until BAR and Toyota gave up Bridgestones last year for Michelins. Now they really are only suppying one top team, Ferrari.
Rumour is that McLaren were afraid Bridgestone might share their testing data with Ferrari but I find that one a little far fetched.

is that stuff on the car intentional? or did he drive through a muddy puddle? seems odd that they would do testing like that in public.
and that is one bloody good looking race car given the constraints of the current rules.
