Just wondering whether anyone's had any experience converting a distributor (points or electronic) to a hall effect pickup unit. I'm looking to convert a Holden straight 6 dizzy, rather than adding pickups to the crank. In theory, it should be relatively simple, but knowing where to locate the components and whaich ones can be made to fit is the key.

What type of dizzy setup was in the VK EFI 202's, you might be able to use one of them

I'm pretty sure that the black motor's dizzy was reluctor (most OEM electronic dizzys were reluctor rather than Hall). But it works just as well, and will be the easiest possibly the cheapest way.

Back when I had my HQ V8, I put a Bosch manufactured kit into the dizzy to make it Hall electronic. Was a looooong time ago now (in the 80's) and I don't know if you can still buy them.

You can buy the same type of Hall sensor from Jaycar, and fit it up into a dizzy easy enough, but then you have to also make/get an electronic control box (not too hard) and also make/get a vaned wheel to trigger the sensor (not necessarily so easy!!)

cheers

I was initially planning to use the standard distributor shaft and cup, replace the internals and machine up a new cover (billet style) to neaten up the whole look, with only the hall effect sensor wires protruding. I don't need the spark plug nodules or anything as I'm going to use individually triggered coil packs, so effectively I'm just using the dizzy to sense crank angle.
Mounting the sensor shouldnt be a big deal, but I was just wondering if anyone had found a compatible chopper disc and sensor from either another OEM dizzy or from an aftermarket supplier. I've seen it done with an optical arrangement, but I like the reliability of the hall effect unit. Fabricating a chopper disc is another option, but if there's one out there that fits, it will save me a bit of work.

I believe some EST VK holdens did have hall effect dissys.

VK EFI dizzy is the same as the VC/VH/WB blue engine dizzy with a different ignition curve (at 100% advance by about 2200rpm I think), and it's reluctor.

VK carby had a hall effect (I think) sensor in the top of the bell housing and 3 metal 'slugs' in the outer edge of the flywheel. The dizzy was simply the button on a shaft, with no mechanical or vacuum advance.

I did it when I installed my Autronic SMC in my -77 280Z.

Se pics of it here - http://photobook.sol.no/show_album.php?aid=663906&palbum=1
Sorry for the language being norwegian, but the pics are ok....

I mounted one hall effect pick up on the side, one installed in the distributor cap!
