View Full Version : 1UZ/VH45/2JZ/EL engine dimensions?

I did a search but it looks like the threads that contained this info are gone.

Basically, I have an old merc I inherited. It has about 600mm between the rails, which are quite high ala LX torana. There's about 720mm length available in the bay, and the height from the crank centre to the top of the current motor is about 500ish mm.

Will any of the above motors fit in the hole? I'll be planning on running it on straight gas (keen to look at the EFI gas injection system). Other option is to dig up a common rail diesel turbo from somewhere and play with that.

Have also considered a mustang windsor motor, they are pretty cheap now too.

Sounds like a 1UZ will be too wide, and I imagine a VH45 has similar dimensions. A 2JZ would probably squeeze in though.

Which Merc is it exactly? I've seen a 2JZ in an old Merc, seemed to fit quite nicely. It belonged to a friend of Paydirt, he should be able to tell you what model it is exactly (I know little about German cars).

it's a '71 250 W114.

The rails are about 250mm from the crank centreline so if the block is narrower than this but the heads are wider I still may be ok with a V8 with some tight headers. I think the 1UZ is more or less a 700mm cube from memory?

Yeah something like that. The engine itself will probably fit but the headers will be a problem, especially if the car has a steering box.

how long is the JZ motor?

2JZ si 700mm from rear of block to front of pulleys.

730mm from the back of the head to the front of the water pump pulley.

I have seen an old Ford 250 2V in one of those......not that I'm suggesting you do that.

Jim
06-09-05, 06:39 PM
thanks... yeah, while I wouldn't stoop to a ford 250, it does mean the EL/EF/AU option may well be open. The stupid droopy manifolds of the EA/B would need a change but even they are too old and crappy.

Now I dragged out the spare 1UZ.

660mm from back of head to front of pulley (to which the viscous fan is bolted -an extra 80mm or so). It's about 650mm wide at the widest point, but obviously it's quite a bit narrower down low. This is a Crown engine, with those godawful log style exhaust manifolds.

I could provide some detailed pics (and measurements) if you're prepared to wait till Sunday.

go something turbo diesel. it wouldn't necessarily be any better than any of those mentioned on gas as far as power/running costs, but it would be something new to play with! I would like to put a diesel in my escort next year :D

Jim

GT, thasnks mate I really appreciate it! TRhe annoying thing is I used to ahve a 1UZ and had to sell it, but already took detailed measurements of it, but the post where I recorded it all is long gone :(

Mini-Me, true, but I don't want to go diesel unless I can get a common rail one and they are thin on the ground... :(

ah fair enough. maybe try and run a few Navara ST-R's, touareg's etc off the road to increase supply :D

Jim

what with? my skyline? thanks but I'd rather risk the rising cost of fuel :p

Looks like the magna V6 I have on the floor of the worksop is a very good candidate actually! I'll see if I can dig up a pajero block (for RWD starter provision) and look at using that...

VH45 is a 750mm cube pretty much...bit squishy I reckon.

3 lt Paj TDi & auto would be a pearler

I agree! Wonder what they are worth...

If you are thinking V6, what about one of those funky 3MZFE donks out of the Toyota Kluger?
3.3 litre VVTi V6, 172 kW @ 5600, 328Nm @ 3600. Pretty tasty!

Are they available yet? I've never seen one advertised...

Oh yes, go the turbo diesel route. I love the rattle of the late model DiD Pajeros, sounds tough as.

There is no profit
There are no bogans left. :( They all drive tupperware now and are slower than stock even!

found a mob that can do me a pajero block for $220, or a complete runner for $1800. That's not bad either way....Hmmm

The cheapest 3.5L I have found was $3200 for motor only. pfft...

Next trick will be finding a decent 4sp auto that is fairly short.

What about one of those big block chev diesels. Cheap as chips and gruntier than a pig farm.

They are not that wide...

Other than that I can't find anything- they used to be around in container loads..

One of those and a turbo would make for a fun ride...

The thing iwht the merc engine bay is the 600mm width between the rails. The mitsu V6 is a skinny little thing, so it's either a 60 deg V6 or an inline six. Or an SR20 but I don't see the value of removing a 6 pot and fitting a 4...that's just not right :p

What about a rotor?

Jim

I thought breifly about it, but fuel costs and initial expense is offputting...

update:

The car is rusty so I'm rapidly losing interest. (thats bad)
I checked on a mate's V6 magna, and the starter is in fact under the motor so that's a bonus (thats good)
the motor I bought is an early one and I'm not sure if it's 3.0 or 2.5L. (Thats bad)

Fagnas never came with 2.5l V6's in Aust - think that was only US/JDM Galants?

Jim
26-09-05, 12:54 PM
guess thats something then, thought the first v6 in oz was a 2.5...

THE ASH
26-09-05, 03:05 PM
nope, brought out the 3.0 in '93 - prior that only the Astron

they did use a 4G64 2.4 4 banger for a while, so maybe that & the Astron 2.6 confusticated you?

hmmmm, might have to show this to my dad. His 3.5L V6 Pajero struggles to pull a 17ft caravan. :gay:
