I need an inline boost controller for a dyno tune on the weekend, as i dont have time to put in in electronic control.
So i just want to be able to tune it for the max boost it will see, and then play with the boost levels later.

I dont really want to spend $100 on a turbosmart or GFB valve for one use only. Will it be just as good to use a simple pneumatic valve to bleed of air?

Any opinions on "ball and spring" vs bleed valves? I have heard too many different opinions and need to know from some people who have tried both.

I know it's not the answer you want, but having your ebc sorted will make the dyno time make a lot more sense. A simple bleed will be slack when coming on boost, and tend to overshoot. If all you are tuning on the dyno is full load high rpm then fine, but the boost controller will change things a fair bit in the mid range.

If you have no choice then use a straight bleed. The biggest difference will be in transient response which the dyno doesn't generally allow you to change too much, and the midrange. If you aim for safe fuel and timing then you shoudl still stay safe with the ebc, but I would move heaven and earth to get it fitted before. Also tuning the response of the ebc is best done on the dyno too. Will save you lots of frigging around on the road.

There is a popular little "ball and spring" boost controller selling for about $35 on SAU. The guy is really quick to respond, however I doubt you will get it by the weekend...

Well i broke a clutch cable on the way home today so there will be no playing with boost before thursday night, so i might not have time to do much. I was nearly convinced to put the ebc in, but now i may just settle for a twin bleed valve setup.

I borrowed some nice fancy flow control valves from work and might just use them together. One as a bleed, and the other as a variable restrictor in the line to help control the boost spike.

The main aim of this dyno time was to tune the car to max hp, and see what it could do, so playing with boost curves and drivability could wait till next time, and i can muck around with that in the mean time.

Either way we'll see. I missed the auto shops for a new cable this arvo, so wont be able to drive it till tomorrow night anyway.

Cheers all.
