View Full Version : Stripped brake line/nut

I'm not sure where to really go with this... I need to remove the master cylinder for a reseal & some monkey has half stripped one of the brake line nuts going into it. Besides multigrips, are there any other things I could try? Its a 10mm nut but being half stripped, can't get a 9mm onto it and the multigrips set as hard as I could also started to slip... so I'm a little bit up sh*t creek.

The ugly option I have is to cut the metal brake line near the cylinder, remove it when its out of the car & replace the brake line with another. I'd like to avoid this if possible as you can understand.

Locking pliers done up real tight have always worked for me.

First try the flat part of the jaws (it'll do less damage)

If it slips try the serrated part of the jaw, but don't expect the tube nut to be the same after.

Sorry thats what I meant by multigrips (locking pliers). I guess i'll have to try to get them even tighter, or if room permits, file down the half stripped sides to give a better surface to grip. Thanks tho,

If you can't get it to move with the nut clamped in the serrated part and the pliers set so tight that you need both hands to clamp it on, then you are really in the shit (or you're trying turn it the wrong way :D).

Sounds suspiciously like you are trying to remove the nipple using an open end spanner:oh: , just go down to Supercrap, Ripco, etc and get a flare nut spanner for a couple of bucks - with luck the nipple will still be in a state fit to unscrew. Otherwise, would think the vice grips should do the job unless the fitting is really shagged.

Flare nut spanners are great
Till you get a really tight nut to undo
Then they round the nut faster than an open ender
They spread at the open end unfortunatly

Use the vice grips...... and replace the nut.

Sidchrome/Repco flare nut spanners FTW, shit all over the cheaper ones.. I had a cheap set which just spread out trying to undo 20 year old brake lines so I got a Sidchrome and it worked perfectly.

This is likely to be taken to a ridiculous extreme, so DON'T do this. But any nuts that are super tight, if you apply the heat of a propane torch (get it till it's borderline to touch - i.e. you can touch it without permanent burns but it's too hot to hold on to) they usually undo ok.

Also, a penetrant like Penetrene can make things move that a month long soak in CRC willl not free.

Been there, done that. Found proportioning valves under the car the worst offenders and usually result in much cursing and blood.:)

Just a further thought, the car isn't late 60's early 70's European, when a 9mm won't quite fit on - not 3/8ths by any chance? Found a number of cars that are otherwise metric are plumbed imperial.

Flat file the nut on two sides to a smaller spanner size and try again.

dont pull on the grips, tap it .. the shock of it being tapped with a hamer will more likly break the seal then just swinging of it
