I blame 2 people for this Dale AKA 10sec_rx7 and 2JzR31. Dale for running 11's with a mild Ls1 and 2Jz for running 12's first time out....

Anyhoo....The 4.o litre conversion was getting ugly and the ALL MOTOR class only happens 4 times a year so for the rest of the year I would be driving around in the nugget :(

SO, I picked up a Ls1 motor today. Still undecided as to how to run it (computer wise) or what box behind it (auto/manual). Motor is in the bay and tomoro I'll pull the sump off it and figure things out. I'm thinking Microtech and TH350 at the moment

SO (Part II) this motor made 230kwatw in it's old habitat, how well will it run in a Lux??????

BTW: The 4.o litre only needed wiring to finish so I'm calling that a completed conversion before any of you "God can't you finish anything" guys start :)

Photos to come tomoro

Nice one.

Who finishes projects anyway!!

Jim

bah, it's not finished until it's been raced! :p
I should buy one of your old projects off you so I can get into it too, sounds like you already done most of the hard work! LOL

Hoping to be about 350 to 400kg lighter than Dales 11 second SS :)

Why not a 1UZ? It would loose in capacity, but would probably be cheaper to get up and running.

Why not a 1UZ? It would loose in capacity, but would probably be cheaper to get up and running.

1UZ has got 4 cams. But it aint got the bang for buck horsepower potential of the LS1. (thats coming from a pushrod hater) It would cost an absolute fortune to get a 1UZ making 250-300rwkw NA. Its not that hard for an LS1 and the extra cost will be worth it if real quick times are your goal. I take it Chuck wants 10's :D

Nice work Chuck. This is going to haul arse :)

10sec_rx7
11-08-06, 09:41 PM
i put money on this car running 11.50's on a stock motor, will all my goodies on it should make around 340rwhp bog stock they make ~250rwhp

when i put my nice cam in it, 10.80's@ high 120's

ill get onto the ecu now chuck and see what Dom can come up with

ALLMTR
11-08-06, 11:21 PM
I'm surprised Dom hasn't developed something for these motors already. The market both here and overseas is going to be booming in the near future.

With me as weight saving specialist and Dale on the power development side of things, the future is so bright I gotta wear shades.

I got hate on Toymods BUT I will repeat it. TOYOTA MAKE NUGGET ALL MOTOR MOTORS!!!! :)

Gee you can tell that this motor was designed to go in a lot of different platforms cause the mounting tabs are well set up.

I think Im gonna have to get a Camaro rear sump sent out from the US. Anyone got any hookups????

Yeah I would but on the Ls the sump is cast alloy and appears to be a stressed member. Appatently Suburban Imports have the Camaro sump kit for $550. I'll give them a call on Monday.

I've put an offer on a 6 speed manual so we'll see

Thanx for the positive replies :)

as much as i hate push rods this is going to be a wild conversion. should run damn good numbers and be bloody cheap.

if u dont mind me asking whats a second hand LS1 worth these days. must be tons of them around. if u get bored im pretty sure they have a 429 iron block for these things now, 10sec RX should know.

Pulled the IM and sump off it today. Wrapped all ports/sump etc (Its amazing how precious this motor is than the last one). Got the motor in the bay and made templates for the engine mounts. Ran out of steel so should have at least one of the mounts done tomoro...

Might even get away with this sump :)

plus the mounts will be in the middle of the motor which is always a good thing

ALLMTR
14-08-06, 05:40 PM
Finished the left mount today and have nearly finished the right one. Once I've done the mounts I can check out whether this sump will work. Sux living in the sticks as I have to clamp things together, take them into town to get tacked together, bring them home and check it fits then take it back into town to get welded. Takes a whole bunch of time that could be better spent on the car.

muttaburra
14-08-06, 06:24 PM
y dont u buy one of them cheap shit welders, at least u can tack it together urself. save u at least 1 trip. i think supercheap selling them for $99. duty cycle is shit but for little jobs im sure they would be ok.

So what do you guys reckon, manual or auto....oh and reasons please

2ofdem
15-08-06, 04:50 AM
Auto: You plan to drag race it and the classes you can race it in are all DYO consistency is the key.

GSRman
15-08-06, 07:00 AM
as above *AND* you are going to be struggling for traction anyway, and auto will help that.

bigmuz
15-08-06, 07:17 AM
Auto. Scrounge up a converter for it and bob's your mother's brother.

Dansedgli
15-08-06, 08:03 AM
Manual. Better skids :P

Nah i think 2ofdem is on the money. Manuals aren't as consistant. I still cant hit 3rd gear cleanly in my EA!

Pfft.. its much harder to grab 3rd with emanuel

HoonBoy
15-08-06, 09:37 AM
Auto, more consistent, no clutch issues probably cheaper as well. The downside is the overall power capability is lower unless you rebuild the auto.

2JZR31
15-08-06, 10:00 AM
Auto FTW. More consistant. Probably quicker when there is 10-11 sec cabability. Won't be as harsh on the rest of the drive line. The quickest LS1 commos I have seen are Auto.

GSRman
15-08-06, 10:12 AM

10sec_rx7

i have a good supply of converters for the 460e's as well

auto FTW ... i might have an auto box at home for one of these...ill have a look tonight.

ALLMTR
15-08-06, 06:45 PM
Wow that got some action in here hehehe

Pricing it all up today. Manual box $2000, Clutch $1500, shifter + late model shaft so at least 4000 for a manual
The glide I have is 6 cyl which can be built as strong as a V8 box BUT has a seperate bellhousing which won't bolt up to an Ls1. I'd have to get a Chev box if going glide/turbo 350/400.
The factory auto is a bit sus in regards to strength.
I think with a light car and low gears an auto would be the better choice so that is where Im going.
AUTO FTW
Now just gotta decide which type.....Dicuss please :)

RSWEPN: Please let me know if you dig up an auto

RSWEPN
15-08-06, 07:36 PM

Well as you can see I got the mounts finished :)

Got one of the rad hoses done and have started cutting the sump*

* By cutting I mean drilling holes in a line and "elongating" them hehehe

Water pump is gonna be a pain in the a55 as it rotates the opposite direction to the crank :/

ALLMTR
17-08-06, 05:07 PM
Well I dont know if anyone is reading this but I'll keep updating it...

I got an alternator today and was looking at where to mount it
I'm thinking of going to an electric water pump as it would simplify the alt fitment, free up some power and drop a little bit of weight. It would also allow me to run the thermo behind the rad.

Finished cutting (drilling?) the sump and tomoro I'll check out fitment

bigmuz
17-08-06, 05:30 PM

ALLMTR

I've read that Davies Craig had issues cooling the LS1 with an EWP so I've sent them an email. I'd rather stick with factory but it would be heaps easier with an EWP

HoonBoy
17-08-06, 08:22 PM
I'm reading, its good to see projects that actually have stuff done to them unlike mine :(

I would be suprised if one EWP would be enough, two should work nicely though. Can you run two EWP's of one controller or stage them?

dhs
20-08-06, 02:10 AM
Have you considered converting it back to carb? There's an LS1 powered VN Commodore with a carby running into the 12's on streetcommodores.com.au forums.

He's on his L plates to

JZK25
20-08-06, 05:28 PM
Carb would still require an ignition control computer which is 90% the cost of full control plus the cost of an inlet manifold to suit carb. Then add to that the huge cost of getting a carb tuned to make power. This is a real consideration because carbs are horrible coarse things and need someone with real knowledge to get them to operate anywhere near as good as a base mapped $1000 ecu.

F|sh
20-08-06, 11:31 PM

Been tied up going to the hosp over the last few days but have managed to figure out the cooling system. Only going to need to undo two clamps, two bolts and one connector and the whole system (rad, thermo, hoses and both water pumps will come clear

nah muz...
engineers would let this one run i believe considering they allow the mini trucks on air bags getting around with both "c" and "z" notches in thier chassis'. ( tis illegal in QLD but i dont believe NSW _yet_ )

Chuck, if you havent already jump over to www.downundertruckin.tk, those guys are very good and knowing all the modification rules that can and cant be done on commercials (especially hiluxs) and plenty of them are running notched rear sections and 4-link rear ends. there is a bloke on there username is JAP350, has finished pretty much exactly what you are doing.

if you need a contact for some of the engineers that have allowed the notches etc let me know i will check with a few of the guys i know that are running 4 links in their hiluxs.

Can't get ladder bars passed either. 4 link only. I'll probably just make a 4 link rear to suit my chassis.

Redid most of the alternator mounts today. HEAPS harder to mount the alt than it was to mount the motor as the alt needs to be adjustable. Got the Th350 home and tomoro I'll start on the rear trans mount and see how much room I have in the trans tunnel.

Yeah whenever I put it into the address bar the screen just comes up blank?!?!?!

Power was out today so pulled the Th350 down. It had some water in the (chrome) sump but it hasn't been run through the auto. Convertor has "HI STALL" written on it so *shrugs*

Auto looks really fresh on the inside and should be fine to get the car on the road and engineered. Rear mount was f*cked so I'll pick up a new one tomoro. The trans mount needs to come forward 3 inches and will work out the best way to do it tomoro

bigmuz

Dale: You can post the price of the EWP if you wish :)

Today I got the radiator mounted. I went down to Sydney to get some bits off Dale. Got the new 110 Davies Craig electric water pump. Neat bit of gear and certainly a lot better than the earlier one. Also got some alloy bends for the Beside The Radiator (BTR) air intake.
Dale lent me some standard exhaust manifolds but they go no where near fitting due to how high my engine mounts mount on the block :/
Ah well I wanted to make some ALLMTR extractors for it anyway.
Dale's going to get the sump welded and some alloy fittings for the block to the rad hoses done

BIG THANX TO DALE. Couldn't imagine doing this without his help

Got the EWP mounted today (well as mounted as it gets), mounted the PWR auto cooler and ran the auto cooler lines. Made some mounts for the cooler lines and checked the fitment of the grille.

Start on fuel system tomoro. I have a Bosch 044 pump and gotta get a fuel pressure regulator. Factory system uses reg at pump so only runs one line but I'll run duals

Im after some input. I can get schmik Excel seats for 50 bucks or 250 for some Gti seats. I was thinking of fitting some base model Swift seats and then Gti's will bolt in at a more (financially) conveniant time

Spent the day redoing a lot of things that I wasn't happy with. The rad mounts were only L shaped to the front panel and did not prevent the rad moving up and down so I made some swish looking brackets with speed holes and everything :/
Redid the auto cooler lines as the way I had it before one was mounted off the motor which means movement and another thing to undo when I pull the motor so made a mount off the castor rod mount. Made a mount for the fuel pump and got some stainless bolts to hold it to the chassis. Made a cardboard fuel tank to get an idea on mounting and capacity. Still gotta find my aquarium link to work out it's capacity.
Measured the tailshaft and pulled it to send off.
Off to work in Syd for two days so that will give me the opportunity to drop a few things off at vendors :)

Aquarium size?

Try this, width times depth times height.

That'll do it :D

If you use cm that gives you cc s, if you use millimetres that gives you cubic mils. If you use metres that gives you cubic metres.

Got a fair bit done whilst in Syd. Picked up a VX computer and loom from RSWEPN (MUCH APPRECIATED DUDE)
Got some 3/8 aluminium fuel line and some trick looking nylon mounts.
Managed to get a new starter motor with bolts from Holden for $220. (I thought that was a real good price)

I took the yoke that I got with the box and took the Hilux tailshaft. Apparently the yoke I supplied only had a 6cyl uni so he supplied the yoke, uni and tailshaft yoke.
Put the shaft in today just to make sure it fits. Gotta head back to syd soon so won't get any more done today
GSRMan: From what I have seen I should be able to just take the tank as a box and then I can mark where I want what.

I thought them manifolds looked pretty shit and wouldnt work well either, but i guess im wrong. A 4-1 design would work much better imho.

2JZR31
22-09-06, 12:47 PM
No matter how shit the manifolds, a twin turbo LS1 is always going to make good power. I reckon a more conventional design would give heaps better spool time and off boost response.

ALLMTR
22-09-06, 04:43 PM
Yeah I think manifold design with turbos has sweet bugger all to do with outright power. Driveability and throttle response are a whole different thing.

Got the battery and fuel tank dummied up today. Get some more done in that respect tomoro. Tank measures up to 30 litres. Was gonna go with an Odyssey battery but ended up with a generic type. Made the earth cable and will measure up the power lead tomoro.

Went looking for guages today. OMG $1000 for a set!!!!! Hmmmmm

ALLMTR

Got a fair bit done today. Mounted and adjusted the shifter. Mounted a fuel line (still undecided whether to run the reg up front or make a "returnless" system). Mounted the battery box with added supports. Put the starter in to check clearances (All seems OK). Measured the power cable to the starter. Mounted the fuel pump.
Tomoro I'll start on the fuel tank mounts and do some more on the seats

ALLMTR
25-09-06, 12:38 AM
Didn't feel the best today so decided it was a day of rest. Did a bit of financial planning and the total cost has just gone over $4k. Big costs to come are valve body, convertor, harness and fuel pressure reg. Exhaust shouldn't cost too much but will take a bit of time. Body needs probably 5-600 on it. Oh alloy work and tuning need to be added....and engineering/rego...
I was/am hoping to keep the costs in line with it's value....whatever that is

Ok back into it. Thanx to Secoh for the pep talk. The main problem is gonna be the extractors as the mounts sit a lot higher on the motor than they do on a Commodore so factory stuff is out. I'll grab a standard manifold off Dale (if he has one) and see if redoing the mounts lower is easier than me making custom headers. I'll Pm the wiring guy and arrange to have the loom sent down to him to set it up for "plug and play"
