Well here's my fairly stock old thing. Slow, slow process of modification/restoration going on.

No great news, just corrected the somewhat :gay: offset of the rear wheels with some 25mm bolt on spacers. Even on the stock flogged out suspension it now feels a bit more predictable on change of direction etc and turns in a bit nicer, I'm guessing that had a bit to do with where the rear rims were sitting.
I'm about to piss off the HICAS too- the bushes are flogged and the rams are no longer centring the rear end consistently- Noltec solid subframe bushes and pump/reservoir from an Aussie 31, hicas lines and rams in the bin. Need to get rear springs then the new suspension bits can all go in.

Argh, 19 year old sikaflex melted and I lost my intercooler vent trim while I was in Victoria, hence the big black void on the passenger side... Now I have a pair of GTS-R vents so will be mounting one where the number plate is (for future engine oil cooler, eventually will fit a PS cooler in the stock intercooler spot on the other side when I go front mount).Numberplate on the dash I guess...

Amazing what you can do with a 2 megapixel phone camera and a couple of minutes in photochop. And gray hides a multitude of sins.

Put (most) of my new suspension parts in yesterday. I have JIC coilovers in the rear from an S13 with adaptors from 2-3 stud for the top mount, 6kg/330lb springs. Front end thusfar I just chucked my new springs in, 350lb, 40mm lower. I have cusco cambertops to fit in the front but there is an issue with regard to the supplied spacers not being bored big enough for the shock shafts, next weekend for those. Theres also a JIC carbon fibre front strut brace coming from Japan for the front.
The front shock inserts seem to be coping fine but in the coming months I intend to sleeve the front struts for height adjustment and go to 450 or 500lb springs, new shock inserts.

Yeah clearance is tight, most Jap bars won't clear an RB25 and an RB30 or hybrid is right out of the question...I mean the RB20 is bloody short, the deck is barely above the top bellhousing bolts...

floody
17-01-08, 01:54 PM
Well, there goes RB20DET number two.
Big end I reckon, will strip and find out in a couple of weeks.

A little unsure what I will do just yet. Possbly RB25DE+T running off a Nistune'd stock ecu, most likely a silvertop RB20DET long motor while I rebuild the original redtop with forged pistons etc.

I will also correct a few other issues, i.e. paint front panels, go to bilsteins instead of current mismatch setup, possibly a new LSD centre, ditch HICAS, front mount cooler, fix heater core etc.

In the meantime, I will soon be driving this for a few months;
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v202/floody79/Image029.jpg

Just have to stick a windscreen, heater core (all my cars seem to have fucked heaters) and caliper kit in it and rego it.

People keep saying that....

Compared to a silvertop a redtop has a stronger block, bigger ports, bigger water jackets, bigger oil galleries, bigger cams stock, thicker round the bores.... I think shit fuel and some electronics issues killed mine this time; I'd just finally sorted the electronics and it started knocking. Nevermind.

Slvertop ecu etc is definitely better but the motor itself is like a watered down version of the original.

Silvertop is going in as a temporary thing.

I like this car a lot mate, gl getting it back on the road.

Cheers mate. Its time I stopped and did things properly. Its been mostly reliable and all, but really I've been running things into the ground and bandaid fixing others.

Update...

There were no silvertops around; I've yanked the redtop out and I'm rebuilding that. Currently stripped to short block to send off to be machined and freshened up.

It spun number 4 big end bearing. Crank and rod do look saveable though.

Otherwise...it was pretty mint inside. Bores, pistons, head look great, all clean in the bottom end, under the rocker covers looked almost new.
No signs of detonation though looks like its been a little lean on cylinder 1.

So looks like I'll get the crank machined, maybe a quick hone, some new rings and bearings and slap it back together. While the head is off I'm removing the butterfly system in the intake ports (a lot like Toyota's TVIS) and cleaning that stuff up a bit, might chuck some cams in along the way.

Its a good chance to start on the long list of other stuff the car itself needs doing as well.

Mild update.
Bought
-silvertop long motor
-GT-R injectors
-Z32 AFM
-R33 GTS-T calipers and rotors
-S13 front uprights (may go to S13 suspension swap)

About to start putting things back together.

Also got these

Work Meister S1 2P, 17x9" +12, 17x10 +4, lovely fitment :D
Will be repainting centres in a less gaudy hue, probably dark grey.

Teaser...
Rideheight is a little wack with the motor out. Only the front rims are on in the pic with it out of the carport, other pics I bolted the rears on and sat it on some wood then dropped it to rideheight.

floody

I'm painting them gunmetal grey with a bit of metallic. Bit hard to powdercoat as the centres don't really separate from the outer (they're kind of pressed together).

nice! Looks the business. Will the guards need to be flared/lipped? I reckon the centers in white would look pretty cool too.

Also, can I ask where you got the wheels from?

floody
10-12-08, 12:37 PM
Yeah I have to roll the guards ever so slightly, maybe pump the flare out a little, but they fit pretty well.
Wheels came from a guy in SA secondhand, but most of mine I just buy off yahoo Japan through a broker.

floody
07-09-09, 08:04 PM
Now it drives!

Looking like this right now

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v202/floody79/03042009358.jpg

Body is still ratshit though. But I've got it to a driveable tune, and most of the work is done. Hopefully do subframe bushes and finish rolling/primering rear guards in the next couple of weeks, then drive it everywhere and work the bugs out of it..

Still to do:
-Subframe mounts, diff mount, remove redundant HICAS lines and rams.
-Front mount intercooler (bidding on old Apex'i one right now)
-Bodywork tidying, considering biting the bullet and going a full respray in that Mazda metallic white.

CXTdreamer
07-09-09, 10:17 PM
Don't do anything to the body, thats just right

floody
07-09-09, 11:57 PM
When I say body work, I mean a fresh front bar, and rear bar cap to replace the previous owners bodges (i.e. bogged over a hole rubbed through one corner...cracked and bogged...etc), one front guard is off an aussie sedan and paint doesn't match, quarter panels have cracked paint from pumping the guards, grille mount is cracked off one headlight and grille has hairline cracks (have replacements for both) and so forth.
Just tidying up, will still stay white with black strips, stock looking body lines everywhere etc, just freshened.

I'm considering the Arctic White but most likely will just get a closed door dust over in Nissan 324 Super White.

CXTdreamer
08-09-09, 12:26 AM
Yeah and I meant it looks great as it is, it has patina

floody
11-12-09, 06:30 PM
Patina gone...well for the front half anyway.
Fresh paint for guards, new front bar, new front lip, vents etc.
So body side is acceptable for now, got a few days worth of sorting little things now but its almost done bar tune, wheel alignment and fitting urethane rear subframe and steering rack mounts.

Cheers guys!
I have some slight rubbing issues in the rear, not with the wheel arches, they're fine, but a section just behind the black side trim which sticks out and rubs the wheel (trailing arm datto style so wheel comes forward and up), I'm going to make a small cut adjacent to it and fold the offending section in.

Numberplate will probably reside on the dash. Not going to be driven a lot from now on.

Ah closest to side on I have currently

The blue centres will go, in time.

All that needs is a 25DET with gt30, 6boost, gate and pfc to be perfection :D

floody
11-12-09, 11:18 PM
Haha. As awesome as that would be, its staying RB20DET and I have deliberately modded it with as much stealth/OEM stuff as possible. Only shooting for ~180-200rwkw, engine bay looks effectively stock (well, it will when I put the heatshields back on and replace the blue silicon step joiner). Turbo is VG30DET, injectors GT-R, intercooler from R34 GT-T, Z32 AFM, stock airbox and 'cold air' scoop...etc

I wouldn't mind doing an R32 RB25DE with RB26 rods and crank though at a later date.

Because its a car I love, I plan to keep for quite some time, and it doesn't deserve to live in a leaky carport through Tassie winters. Its going somewhere it can be clean, dry and indoors; I don't drive it much now either so I'll just fly up and roll it out for the odd PI/Winton sprint day.

A lot of people have the conception in the back of their mind that old Japanese cars are disposable, particularly 80s ones, I don't feel like that. Also at the end of the day I'd rather progress with it getting faster than be doubling back to chase rust and stuff from living outdoors.
