View Full Version : The WRX, the white one

It's mostly a stock MY98 WRX, but it's got an APS kit that gives it the same power as a stock STi.
But some time soon(ish) it's getting a 2.6 litre engine and a 6-speed gearbox.

I don't want to run a lot of boost on it, just make it nice & easy to drive with plenty of torque.
Bill - a 2.5 STI short with ported 98 heads, stock cams, VF23 turbo & match ported manifolds will make over 200kw atw, spool up so fast you'll barely notice any lag (one I helped with a while ago was boostin hard by 3000rpm), & have a monster torque curve.
I don't know what is required in the way of intercoolers etc, but I can find out. (I deal with S&J Automotive a LOT, just did the heads for shauns new rally car).
Feel free to PM me when it's time to get the rexy moving.
Cheers

Ta for the info.
We're keeping the PWR intercooler where it is, just to keep it stock-looking.
We'll be doing the engine ourselves, as we've got a very good shop.
What sorta suspension mods does it have (or is it stock)?

Pretty much stock, though I want to lower it a little. It's got a bigger anti-roll car on the rear, and the stiffer links.
Do you mind if I ask why the 2.6 and not just the 2.5?
If you're not going for a massive HP build seems a little unwarranted? There are plenty of 2.5 setups making the bucketloads of torque you're after..

There is no substitute for cubes. Building a reliable engine for boost will need forged pistons & iron sleeves. If you do this then it costs 0$ to get 103mm pistons instead of 99.5mm and have 2.6L ...say no to free HP? I don't think so.
Std 2.5 block & cast pistons are OK for 100% street use (low boost), but sustained moderate boost &/or high boost (eg track days, drags) will kill it very quickly.

I want a 2.6 because everyone has a 2.5. Gotta be a little different.

How about a 2.7L then, were a few getting around back in the day.

You can get them out to nearly 2.8 litres with sleeves and a stroker crank, but I just want a bit of an over-bore to keep it simple.
It'll be getting forged pistons and so on, so it'll be plenty strong enough. The APS kit also has water injection and that helps a lot.

Ever think about a H6 Bill?..... i reckon that could be a bit of fun.
EG33 bored and stroked to 3.9L would be fantastic, but a tad too long and painfull.

I know it can be done, but nah, not for me. It's just a fast-ish road car that has to be mostly stock.
If you're gonna go 2.6 you'll want to look into close-decking the block, they get a bit short on the metal & tend to split sleeves.
2.5 STI with the stock cast pistons is good for 230kw atw on up to 16psi with no reliability issues, after that comes forged pistons/stock rods/stock block for up to 250kw atw on up to 18-20psi, above that it's steel rods & closed deck block territory.
On the bigger engines (2.3+) the ex flow of the stock heads is a real problem, causing lacklustre spool up, get em to work well on the ex side & you've half won the battle.

I'd agree with 230kw @ wheels with good tuning, thats about it though i reckon.
Pretty strong engines with a few mods, i recall 45psi boost from a T66 (stock subaru extractors with custom up pipe) on a 2.5L open deck block fitted with bone stock MY98 heads & cams netting 10.0 @ 145 (no nawz)...5 speed dog box too.
I'm sure flowed heads and cams may have made similar power on less boost though.
Car ran around 80 passes & countless dyno pulls (best of which from memory 499hp @ all 4 (pre shootout days ;)) but when it was finally pulled down the bores were no longer round, closed deck FTW.
While i'm thinking of it 6-speed will be magic Bill, from memory you will need to use a STi automatic tailshaft as the 5-speed will be the wrong size.
BTW, I really want to sell my WRX
(edit - engine above had all manner of other modifications as well such as, copper HG's, Wiseco pistons, rods, ARP bolts etc).

Yes we're going to close/brace the deck, port the heads, cams, etc.
I only want to run about 14 psi boost though.
Helped out with a 2.3 stroker with STI 2L factory closed deck block, stroker crank, thicker sleeves, scat rods, arias pistons, full port + OS stainless valves for the heads, big cams, stock tweaked intake & STI ex manifolds with 400L turbo, made 323kw atw on 21psi boost, made over 200kw atw from 3500rpm on, nasty WRX, one of the few I wouldn't like to run against.

No torque worries
:D
GBeard - tuff, who did your closed deck?, not many guys know how to do it, just like to know for future reference.
Bill - the other option for you would be semi-closed deck, basically you reinforce the sides of the bore with pins between the bore & the outer part of the block, not as good as a full closed deck but a lot less stuffing around.

Being as how boost is (mostly) a measurement of how hard it is to get air into the engine I'd say you're right there mate :D
Wow! something different in a wrx!
very cool!

GB, you know it's only a matter of time before it comes out again and you put 2x rotors on a new closed decked and sleeved 08 EZ36(6) H6...

Any news on this one?
Nothing much changed this year. Have had to concentrate on one of my other projects (http://s14.photobucket.com/albums/a304/boss5705/Car/Uterus/?start=all) to get it finished first. As soon as the Utereus is done it's 100% back to the EJ28SC.

Once it's finished it will stay there. I then have to finish my 2JZ-GTE Merc.
BTW, I highy recommend never to have more than one project going at a time. Bad idea, very bad idea, to have three running concurrently.
