Grp A cone filter
Mongoose exhaust
Grey injectors
RS 500 intercooler
Air injectors
L8 ECU closed loop, lambda
MD evolution chip
GGR silicone hoses
Grp A breather system

btw, this is an aussie forum, so not too many people will know what "1996 on a P" means ;)

Welcome anyway. Very very nice ride. Have always loved these things.

^wot he said.

And downunder they're prolly all in bed now...
('cept for the sad bastids among us)

Edit: afterthought...whereabouts do you live in England ? Did you have to give just the one, or both testicles to insure that thing? Btw, I love it.

400hp? 32psi?
Awesome and all but I'm wondering... Is the 400hp at the wheels, or one of those derived flywheel figures poms like to quote?

Cal
05-01-07, 08:07 AM
Why would it be a derived flywheel figure? Might have been on an engine dyno. I know exactly how much my race car puts out at the fly.

MAX Power hp figures = 1hp per kilo of bog, plus an extra 100 for every blue led fitted.

A mate had 2 of them in Sydney, 1 written off (red) the other sold for what a new EVO costs, apparently it's rare or something.

It's a derived flywheel figure us poms like to quote. The 400/400 conversion is very popular - probably more likely to come across one this spec than standard.
Except the suspension and brakes - nice to see one with the handling to match the power. :yup:

Cheers, Jim.

huh? what exactly is that?

ohh and 32psi is crazy. pump fuel 98ron fuel?

Escos Jim
05-01-07, 06:11 PM
Air injectors are...... quote" Air injectors, are, as they sound, a set of injectors that inject air instead of fuel. They are commonly used to control the boost pressure output by a turbocharger.

How do they work?
The air injectors have an input to the top of them from the turbocharger and an output on the bottom to the wastegate. The injectors are wired to the ecu so they can be controlled.

The ecu air injector map is mapped against boost, rpm and air temperature. The injectors initially stay closed, keeping the wastegate closed too, encouraging the turbo to spin to speed as fast as possible. When the desired turbocharger pressure is aquired during mapping, the injectors are pulsed so that they open at that point, allowing air to flow to the wastegate. This of course opens the gate, bypassing some exhaust gas from the turbine wheel, slowing the compressor and leveling or dropping the boost pressure depending entirely of course on how much air we allow through. The beauty of this system is we can use a relatively weak actuator to achieve very large boost levels and we can accurately program boost curves into the system."

Hope that answers your question :D
32psi is pretty safe (and an eye opener :w: ) on a cosworth if you have a WRC multi layer gasket.

And fuel is 99RON from the pump.

Cheers.

okay so just a standard boost controller setup. Just not refered to as a air injector in aus (or anywhere I've seen... especially since they are usually a 2/3 port air solenoid valve usually).

Jeez 32 is a fair bit of boost for any motor. Nice.

They cost craploads in the UK as well, prices start at around AUD$20,000 for a fairly crappy example up to well over AUD$40,000+ for a very good example, which isn't far off what you would pay in Australia. I think they only made 2,500, so there aren't many to go around.

Compared to its contemporary rivals in the ST185 Celica GT4 (5,000 built) or Pulsar GTi-Rs (10,000+), which are available for half the price or less for Jap Import models and lack little in performance, though the Escort is the better handler as standard being 35:65 RWD biased.

Lancia Delta Integrales seem to hold their value quite well though, even though they actually made quite a few of them (4,000+ of Evo 2 alone, well over 10,000 of all 16v versions). A decent one will still cost you almost as much as an Escort Cosworth, but then it was probably the most successful rally car of that early '90s era.

We had one of these engines in a hillclimb car with a whipple supercharger and alcohol. It made a shade under 500 flywheel hp at around 20 pounds of boost.

32 is LOTS- should make 500 at the wheels with that much. Maybe too tight in the exhaust housings?

This is what I don't get, it always seems like a huge amount of boost in these things for what is big power, but not huge power. I would have thought 400hp would be doable at more like 20-25psi.

Anyway, Very very cool and way more grunt than anything I've ever owned. I guess it would simply be fast, regardless of the hp number quoted.

The Sierra Cossies were making 620hp with 2.3bar(33psi) by the end of their development (1992) Escorts ran the same engine didnt they?

maybe the 32psi is absolute pressure.
32 - 14.5 = 17.5 - sounds more reasonable??
