hey all,
just thought id start a thread on my project. as stated on heading its a corolla KE70, 1984 model. i originally picked it up for 200 with a bung as head on it by knocking on some ladies door and asking her if she wanted to sell it as there were amounts of cobwebs between the car and the road. if only my first offer was $50 cause i reckon she would have taken it. anyway here are pics from when it got picked up.

OK this gets bumped to my favourite!

Did you have to mess with the sump or steering? Did you get a front cut? How much have you spent and what do you think it'll owe you finished?

I can answer some questions i been helping him do the conversion, steering no mods, sump is diegrinded slightly to clear one bolt that holds the steering rack in on the drivers side.

he can answer about costs!

yo, yeah ill get you a photo of the part thats die grinded. cause honestly the amount we die grinded was next to nothing, its tiny. its unbelievable how close the fit is when your putting it in.

the amount ive spent is a bit of a hard question as i sort of lost track at the moment. ive spent alot due to the fact that this is the first real car conversion i have ever done so ive also had to buy alot of tools but for direct car costs id say ive spent about $10,000. and once complete i reckon it will be still around this price range because ive got all my parts here just need to install them now. my turbo and shits already paid for aswell.

my original goal with this car was to fit the sr as cheap as possible and go for about 200rwkW. and now ive already side tracked. ive been doing this conversion since july but it was going a bit slow with uni.

Should be pretty quick, were a couple of SR20DET KE70’s getting around up here in Brisbane one sedan and one wagon….. Both of which had no problems peeling rubber off the tyres.

I was tempted recently (to the point in checking out a few donor KE70’s) to drop a 1uzfe into one…. Good clean KE70’s are much thinner on the ground now than they were 2 years ago :(

here are the photos of the sump die grinded out for ALLMTR. its hard to see cause its such a tight fit, but you can tell the webbing of the sump has been cut into, we had a second sump to see how much of it is actual webbing before we get into the sump and there is alot.

Is the AE71 the same? I realise the motor is an A series but is the rest pretty much the same???

AE71 came with a 4-AC + T5 box
KE70 came with a 4-KC

Thats about it.....AE71's were a more late model KE70, all of them had the sloped grill from memory.

I had a AE71 4AGE Corolla about 8 years ago, was a fun beast.

What is the motor out of? Ebay cooler? Every one of these 'rolla's that I have looked at in the past has been riddled with rust....

Edit: Did you consider spacing the crossmember down with 20mm spacers?

pdawg
09-01-07, 08:19 PM
there is no real difference between the ke70 and ae71 as playa said the hydraulic clutch is one of the main changes but all the cross members and shit are the same. and the sloped front is not only on ae71's but also ke70 such as mine here. there arent heaps of them tho as they jumped into the ae71s pretty quick. this one that ive got here is a 1984 ke70 any later than that and it should be a ae71.

i cant say i really considered using spacers on the cross member to drop the motor down, as it sits fairly well where it is at the moment. not sure how much of an affect dropping the motor down would have. thats a good question tho, ill see what happens.

btw the cooler is just jap, originally the car was just gonna be a budget SR conversion but over the time ive been doing it, i slowly keep wanting to get more power, so i bought the intercooler back when i was doing it budget, ill see how it goes. i cant really see much being wrong with it, but you never know.

also i forgot to answer your question in your first reply ALLMTR, i didnt get a half cut, i just got engine package which included gear box, loom, computer etc, for 3k

ALLMTR
11-01-07, 09:52 PM
The small amount of searching I've done on this swap leads me to believe that a front cut may be a good deal just for the front brakes. I reckon this would be an awsum budget build as ebay style bits for the SR are dirt cheap.

pdawg
11-01-07, 11:32 PM
yeh you can easily go budget but i decided to go serious halfway through and started doin shit on the more expensive side. its a basic brake conversion aswell where you can get corona xt130 struts fit the corolla top hat and get springs made up, then you can fit hilux LN106 4 spot calipers, and get peugot 306 vented discs. the peugot vented discs can be picked up for $120-$140 a pair from brembos. with the peugot discs tho you need to file out the holes about 1-2mm so they line up with the hub and its good to go.

pdawg
12-01-07, 12:15 PM
not far now. currently im about to have lunch from mounting my radiator and thermos. after that i need to put in clutch master, brake master and booster, i get my tail shaft chopped and surge tank welded up on monday, then i need to do my fuel lines, and finish off the wiring for the haltech, and ill see if any other problems arise from that. ohh and i need to get my bluebird trx rims fitted with new tyres.

Top work pdawg! I used to own an AE71 (and was about to ask the same question as ALLMTR but it was answered by psi999) and it was top fun in the wet, even with the standard motor. It was a little lowered and had a mild cam + 5 spd manual + exhaust, but that was about it.

I'd love to see this project when finished (and can take some photos of it when done too if you like) - I'm in Adelaide as well.

Are you going to respray it or leave it as is?

pdawg
12-01-07, 02:56 PM
currently im gonna leave it as is. itll be too hard to get it resprayed now as i just want to get it on the road now. but once i give it a clean and polish it will look nearly new. cause the paint when i bought it looked in really good condition. obviously now there is a cm thick dust on it or as i like to call it rust preventative lol.

I've heard a rumour that the tunnel needs cutting to fit the gearbox. Did you have to cut the tunnel?

PLAYA
16-01-07, 01:38 AM
Nah no cuttingof the tunnel just cutting around the gear leaver. When we fitted it up it is very close, you wont get the gearbox out easily, will have to drop the crossmember a bit to get it out.

pdawg
16-01-07, 01:43 AM
yeh as playa said we have the trans and everything in no worries, it is a close fit but by no means difficult. youll only need to cut the tunnel if you want to replace the clutch without having to drop the motor because youll have no room to get the gearbox bolts pulled out as they will hit the fire wall. only cutting involved was gear knob hole need to shift it back.

i cant say i hugely considered heaps of other different brake upgrades, but at the time i knew of this conversion and new how easy it was gonna be. the only problem that i do have with it tho is the unsprung weight as those calipers you see are cast iron, so they weigh a shitload. the height with these corona struts that i have fitted are very similar to the standard corolla height so no chopping needed. not sure how those other struts would have done with the corolla control arms etc.

cheers. unfortunately the project has back stepped as i had to take the turbo off and send it back. for some unknown reason when i got the turbo i could spin the compressor wheel fine, then when i put it on my manifold and hooked up lines i went to spin it and it was locked up. i dont mean it was turning a bit rough it physically did not turn at all. the blade cut my finger before it would spin. and it wasnt the housings either as i took them off and it still was jammed in the core. it comes back this week though along with my hks 264 degree cams and cam gears. pics to come.

pdawg
14-03-07, 05:02 PM
dunno why, i sent it back to 6boost and he checked it out then sent it back to distributor. he said they just replaced it no questions askes, so they obviously knew it was a factory fault and not something that was caused by me which i cant think of anything i did that could cause that. all i care about is that im getting another one without having to pay for it. last thing i needed to do was pay for another turbo.

hey. the diff is out of R31 skyline. it has 4.11 gears, with lsd centre. it has been cut down to fit the corolla. i will have the speedo working just not straight away. fuel tank pick up has a dash 6 fitting from what i remember so i can run 3/8 inch fuel line.

yeh the R31 didnt come with 4.11's. you are correct as mine came out of a pintara. you can get it done with the 4.11's and have an LSD as thats what i have and PLAYA also has the same.

My diff came from Grand Auto wreckers at lonsdale. 750 for the whole thing as the LSD was rebuilt or some shit like that otherwise it was gonna be 650. then i took it to Graham (boss differentials) at lonsdale and he did all the cutting down, i just brought a corolla diff in for him, and he cut that one up and used the mounts for it on the borgwarner. overall he charged $1800, which is pretty good. hope that helps

Ahh ok then. The quote I got for $1K did include rebuilding the diff with new seals (or whatever he was going on about) etc... But I won't be needing it cut down as it'll be for a Lotus 7 Replica we're building, which is apparently the perfect width for an R31 diff.

I can't remember which place I got the quote from off the top of my head, but he was in Lonsdale as well. But by the sounds of things, I'll be giving Grand Auto Wreckers a call for a quote as well.

Thanks for that mate :)

yeh feel free to ask, ill help as much as i can.

scored some new stuff today. got new rear bumper as the current rear one is haggis. for the recaro i hooked up some older ke70 seat rails as they only attach to the bottom of the chair and dont link up to the back rest. so fitting the recaro onto that shouldnt be hard at all. more updates with pics soon.

Hey mate. ive set up my conversion so if i choose to get it complied in the future i can. everything i have done to it will pass, referring to cross member and gearbox cross member not the 3040 :(

anyway cross member wise i didnt calculated it because you want to have the motor centred as possible. i put the motor in while it was on a engine crane and had bricks to hold it in the correct position, i measured from the centre of the crank to the chassis rail and made sure it was equal on both sides (this can take a bit of time as moving the motor a few mm can be annoying as you continually need to have it slightly above the bricks to lower it when you have moved it). once it was centered i got 5mm plate steel and lined it up with the engine mounts on the sr. i bolted the 45 degree plate to the motor and the other one i held upright and lined them up (this job requires atleast 2 people, otherwise will take time) then just welded it where it sat, double checking that the crank was centred. same process for the gearbox. get it where you want it then make the supporting members. you need to cut further down the transtunnel aswell to fit the gearbox as it sits back further than the standard rolla. if you have any other questions or something wasnt clear let me know

About 145mm between the two bolts. i assume thats the measurement that you wanted?

yeah that one and also the one where it bolts between the rails if you have it.

pdawg
03-06-07, 07:25 PM
nah dont have that one. its too hard to measure aswell with motor and shit in the engine bay, cause underneath the cross member drops down so i wouldnt get an accurate number. sorry about that. why you need them anyway out of curiosity?

Com_VC
03-06-07, 07:39 PM
I'm putting an sr20 into my 75 galant and the existing crossmember cannot be used as the steering rod is in the way.

So i've been looking into using the ke70 setup as I know it will work with the SR20 as you have done it, I'll gain rack and pinion steering as well so thats a bonus.

I'm pretty sure both cars share the same track width as well (1320mm) so should be a good match.

Thanks for your help anyways. How much do the KE70's weigh and what do you think it will run down the 1/4? Will be an awesome sleeper :)

pdawg
03-06-07, 09:24 PM
sounds like a good conversion. i assume you seen the part where the die grinding was required on the sump to clear the steering rack on the cross member? not sure exactly how much they weigh but im hoping overall its about a tonne with me in it. id like to break the 10's on quarter mile but ill need to give it zero respect and some good tires.

hey all, i know its been a while since my last post, im just lazy, uni work is getting annoying. anyway for those whom may be wondering why there is no corolla update for the past few months (chuck), its due to this new toy which i have been spending some cash on, im done with it now and its ready to be a daily with no more tweaking.

My series 1 S14
http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m164/petervel/IMG_2902.jpg

mods:
front mount
555cc nismo injectors
Z32 AFM
Peter Liebig Daughter board for the standard Nissan ecu to allow real time tuning

for those who are unsure, Peter Liebig makes the Daughter boards for SR ecu's (mainly s13, only now has he started on early model s14), and the program used to allow for the real time tuning, this turns out to be way cheaper than a power fc, and i also bought a single user license for the tuning software for $210 or 220 whatever it was, so i can tune it myself which i wont be doing, but i bought it so i could take it to my tuner and let him have a play. that may sound like a dodgy program but its damn good, can do the same as any other tuning program. anyway i made 190.4rwkW at 15psi.

http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m164/petervel/IMG_3580.jpg

pdawg
12-12-07, 02:27 PM
Cool! I'm gonna do a list after Xmas and it better be short.

How did you make the battery bracket?

im not sure if you mean the base or the bracket that holds the battery down. so firstly the base i bought about 1.5 meters of the L shape steel and set the drop saw to 45 degrees and had to go 45 degrees in the other direction aswell to make them join in all the corners nicely, then brought the trusty mig welder out, and welded up the joins, flap wheeled them down cause im new to welding and didnt produce what would be could a pimp weld, but it was still quiet good for a noob. drilled all the right holes and bought a meter of that fastener from coventry, the other side fastener as i said was lower so i got just 3mm strap steel, and made it go across the top of the battery, then got the angle grinder and cut a line where i wanted it to bend, and another groove cut to bend it flat again so i could get it to the other fastener and screw it down, and welded up those grooves so it was strong again. sus picture below to help make sense of that.

http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m164/petervel/IMG_3950.jpg

also last night we tapped the intercooler piping since i got the pipe back with the bush welded on it. and now im about to go back out and put the pipe back on and make sure all the clamps are done up.

i still need to move the rubber lines so its not blocking the radiator so much

*EDIT*
just finished the coils and mounting them onto a bracket, one is a little too close to the rocker cover for my liking, so ill get some spacers machined up and lift it about 10mm should be good.

what oil filter relocation/cooler kit did you use ??
how much was it ???

i'm thinking it might be a worthy investment for a track car. mainly cause i'm to lazy to try and squeze my hand in to get the old filter off !!!

the plates for rellocating the oil cooler are perma-cool, and the cooler i bought was a B&M cooler. the cooler itself was 150 or 160 from memory, the oil filter fitted is for a ford ryco number is Z9. the plates for the rellocation are about 30 each from memory, the speedflow fittings were most expensive ofcourse. im using all -8 for the speedflow fittings.

yesterday some serious work got done. the shock absorber mount on the diff needed to be moved over to clear the caliper, the mount had to be moved 25mm. we pulled the diff out cut and welded and put the diff back in, big thanks to RVK355 and PLAYA made my job a whole lot easier

RVK 355

the HEC716's are the high energy coils, and yeh as rvk355 said ive got the autronic cdi to go in so all the stocko stuff needs to go.

Not much difference but if the CDI can handle the current I would have gone HEC.

The pic wont load from image shack for me atm, so I could have mis-read MEC716?

pdawg
03-02-08, 08:45 PM
yeh they are definately the HEC716's. they were the same ones that alex (PLAYA) was using in his bluey and they did a good job, and i got them cheaper aswell

due to a few recent incidents such as PLAYA's roll over and another mates VL crash, the car has been set back the last week as i got the trans tunnel cut out and made bigger and the car now has a 6 point cams approved roll cage, i just got it dropped back at home before and pics will be up later on tonight or tomorrow night. safety first i figure. so now to putting it back together.

Wow this is getting out of control hehehe

your telling me, although safety is a priority so i had to get it done, plus not only do i want to take it down the quarter but i also would like to circuit race it a little bit in sprints, no particular category, havent had any racing experience either so will be for bit of fun. been working on tonight, getting shit back in order. then get it ready to put the motor back in

yeh i was going to do it further down the track, but i figure since im taking it all down to put the cage in not hard to pull the motor out to to get tunnel put in. but yeh 33 gearbox will be happening later on. i just want to have the tunnel ready to go for it now. good times ahead

lol well. my rolla is getting madly neglected, but its only because im getting my s14 rebuilt, and trying to get it ready for when i get my license back. ill start a thread for the s14 soon. its getting upgraded with bilstein shocks, 2 way nismo lsd, motor currently pulled apart, 264 degree hks cams and cam gears, new 2871R turbo. oh and i got r32gtr wheels for it. so hopefully im excused for neglecting the poor rolla

actually yes, the motor is back in and mounted, cut a hole in the trans tunnel for the gearbox. took a while to get my motor back from alexs but we got it here when we got motivation a while ago. i need to reassemble it pretty much and buy some seats, thats the bulk of what needs to be done. half the bushes in my s14 a dying so im changing a few things on that and getting back to work on the rolla very soon.

dont have the specs of the plates at the moment, but they were 5mm laser cut, and i completely removed the old mounts and started again, its the easiest and most probably the best way. just make sure you measure from the balancer to each rail and make sure its in the middle
