Whoa, very nice mate.
A damn sight better than the 99.9% of VL turbos that frequent bankstown square and brighton le sands.
Thats dash looks so clean too mate very nice.
That's fuckin hot. I love it.

Fark me, that engine bay & interior are bullshit clean! Nice job!
That is infact, the best vl ever! :yup:
mate just sent me the link to this in an email at work.. at first i thought using best and VL in the one sentence was a laughable matter.. however i've got to say that this VL shits on every other one in existence. Great work dude :D

power steering cooler?
power steering cooler?
Bingo.
Thanks for the comments guys, I appreciate it.
the auto is fantastic on the track, in the wet especially, it is very cheap for the trq and abuse it handles and is soft on the running gear, so no breakages...getting away fast off the line is great too.
Awesome car, a credit to you and your bro.

Yeh, great car and a Porker basher too, which is even better :)
What cam grind?

Cheers
Brent
EDIT: I see you what cams for your new project....so I guess you wont want to know :P
That's definately the Rosario Dawson of modified Commodores!!

Great work, love it... :)
Please post regular updates, in car footage etc - can't wait to see more !!

the pics from lurch obviusly are not of your car.
yeah they are..... in the first pic he posted my car is beside a black one.
:)
With the amount of abortions getting around, this is a credit to the VL scene.
Very nice car, and interesting use of an Auto. Do you find it has good power out of corners with the limited gear ratios? Does it run a high stall to overcome the gaps in gearing?

It has incredible punch out of all corners, yes I run a small 2800 TCE converter, I tried a 3500 stall at one stage, now that was dangerous, lol, it just lit the tyres out of every turn at part throttle, lol. The motor has such a huge trq spread really compared with most circuit engines thats why it works so well.
after the starts I only use 2nd and 3rd gears (4th has been disabled-too weak) and there is no 'hole' in the gearing at all, its quite amazing.

Very nice, looks tough as:yup:
Nice. What sort of boost and RPM do you get when you stall it on the line? Does it have a transbrake? (sorry for the drag related questions lol)
No Transbrake.
Brent knows the rest...
Nice. What sort of boost and RPM do you get when you stall it on the line? Does it have a transbrake? (sorry for the drag related questions lol)
As I use circuit slicks (and after the warm up lap they arent really hot yet) I cant leave with any boost or it will just smoke the bags, but I do get close to boost against the brake, some starters are hard to judge on handicap starts (flagfall) and i sit there for a while against the brake with like 20% throttle and it can start to turn the tyres, the starters are going "wtf this cawk is doing a burnout" haha
But its very controlable compared with a peaky high HP NA with a tall first gear and a triple plate clutch, lol. generally speaking i get a really good jump on most cars on the start line (particularly V8SC's :) )
no transbrake - the dunlop slicks wouldnt like that at all, lol
Geez thats got somewhat more seroius since I saw it on Caliasturbo.com a few years back!
I bought your old Bosch 036's from you many years ago for my RB30ET project....seem to remember you having a very nice shed with scenic views also :)

With only 3rd gear what sort of speeds and RPM's do you get to? Very nice car by the way.

Yeah I remember you, how are ya?
the horses and cows are still over the back fence :)

3rd gear is 1:1 so its like top gear in a race manual anyway.
with the 3.23 gears it did 7200 on the limiter in top at Pukekohe
with the 3.08 gears it revs a bit less and 'maybe' does 5kph more
I dont have a speedo in the car but you can work it out easy enough..
(630mm tyre OD)
thanks :)
Very impressive car mate. Would love to see some more footage of your car as well as the rest in your field that you race in over there.
Well done.

Damn thats eerie, the sound of the Auto, in what is obviously a track car. Damn it seems fast, very impressive video.
I am embaressed by that video these days, the car wasnt very fast back then and the auto had done a few years and was starting to get soggy.
the funny line into some corners is due to the fact that im defending 1st place and was getting hounded quite bad, lol

always been in a class of it's own this VL, it would be great if you did a little guide on how to get the things to actually handle (perhaps in stages, as not everyone can afford or wants to do a setup as extreme as this). I've just finished building the driveline setup on mine (similar to yours however 30/40r turbo and r33 box) and now want to make the thing feel less like a boat floating around corners.

Grab yourself the latest issue of RACE Magazine mate.
Good article in there about how to set early Dunnydoors up for track work, without going OTT ;)
Bit of a teaser shot... In preparation for things to come...
(Sorry Brent - couldn't resist)
Yummy wide wheels :) Here is a link http://www.arrowwheels.co.nz/wheels/?PHPSESSID=14654c660d849423d30c355abd1e30f6
Hahaha, sly one.....
they are 17 x 11 and 300/640/17 Dunlops, retub the thing much???!!!
looking good! Little bit of work with the hammer and block of wood there? :p
Cheers for all the advice you have given me on my own project (even if I did pick Bilstein over Koni lol)
thats ok, I realise people are slow to learn............. :)

seems like all this stuff is crap.
thought it was all getting the flick anyway.
I got rid of the complete fuck up that was the last camshaft, they only thing is I used the retainers (Luke said they were the first batch that were 100% sweet) retainers shat, now the engine is fucked - Thanks!
Dean said he would see what he could do but no reply..... Im over them big time.
the bent valves have been replaced, head all done but Im now waiting on new valve springs
It made 400ftlbs at 4000rpm, before the turbo started to get cracking it peaked at 630ftlbs (850NM) with 500ftlbs from 4500 - 6500 but the thing had float issues and had no top end at all (677hp) It should have gone 730+ at 7krpm
anyway there is nothing like some more pressure when getting a car ready for racing......... test day next WE and race meeting the WE after

hope you get it sorted in time brent.
can't wait to hear on how the new setup performs on the actual track.
the cars amazing considering your resources and budget compared with the full on race teams.
as always full credit to you.
Cheers
I will let you know what happens
So what exactly happened, some dud stuff from Tighe?
yes
so far the crap product from them:
2 x cams (different specs) obviously no understanding of max ramp rates etc for hydraulic cams - lifter pumping up issues.
1 x set springs - too light for application but they said too hard and suggested custom retainers to decrease seat pressures.
1 set custom retainers - wrong material and not heat treated, know of several sets now that have failed, but I was assured these were good ones and the problem wouldnt happen
Thats a bummer, Tighe seem to have a mixed reputation. Just hope that Luke got mine right before he left.
Who are you going to try now? Nispro did a hell of a lot of RB30ET development, maybe Edo can help?
Got a SMS from Brent yesterday, testing at Taupo:
"Good. No times but it felt great."
Updates as they occur :p
Have you tried a different cam. Wade make a good cam, they did my custom grind for an RB30 and it dials in correct too, not like other well know brands.
I am running a local camshaft now and after sorting through valve spring issues I am on top of it all, the motor is really going well and making very good hp, I did my best time at Pukekohe ever last weekend and the car feels very good, also had what was possibly the best race ive had for 3 years or so with another como and a GT3 cup car, we all did best lap times and the 3 cars were .1 seconds apart from each other
I can now settle into some chassis tuning instead of having engine dramas and improve times further, should have some good pics soon too. car looks good with the new 11" rear rims :)
cheers
Brent
crappy pic .................. more good ones to follow soon, trying to get pics off photographer guy at the mo.
