I thought I would post up my mates H22A powered EG Civic drag car. It has been built up over a couple of years on a very thin budget. No big bits on the car apart from the Weld wheels and Mickey Thompson slicks and front runners. I've had a bit to do with the car myself sourcing parts and providing a few ideas here and there, as well as lending a hand when he races.

Here's a run down on the car:

Car: Jap import EG Honda Civic
Power: 135kw at the wheels
Weight: 790kg without driver and with open headers
Engine: Solid mounted Jap import H22A with standard bottom end, the head has been shaved and ported. Compression is now around 11:1.
Intake: Standard manifold and injectors with 2.5 piping to the front of the car with a bellmouth inlet. Fuel is drawn from a custom aluminium fuel cell in the front of the car by a bosch pump.
Exhaust: Standard domestic headers with 2.5" system with straight thru muffler for street meets. For race meetings where mufflers are not required it runs custome headers exiting in front of the drivers side front wheel
Gearbox: Factory AUDM H22A with 4.7 final drive ratio and billet driveshafts. A recent addition is an OBX LSD. Standard brakes.
Suspension: Completely standard. Running old springs and shocks.
Wheels and tyres: Front wheels are 13"x8" Weld Draglite with Mickey Thompson 13"x22"x8" slicks. Rears are Weld Magnum 15"x4" with 24.5"x4" Mickey Thompson front runners.
Electrical: The car does not run an alternator or any ancillary items. Constant voltage is supplied to the computer by a voltage regulator. It runs an EMS Stinger ECU tuned inhouse.
Interior: Stripped out interior including the dash. Only instruments are an autometer tacho and a home made shift light. The seat is an aluminium Kirkey race seat with 5 point harness.

The car makes 135kw at the wheels with a conservative tune and has run in that state since it first raced late last year. Its first outing saw the car run 12.8 @ 108mph on street tyres. Since that time there have been a few changes made mainly with the aerodynamics of the car and the addition of the LSD. Without the LSD the best time was 12.2sec. The 2nd outing with the new LSD was the Compak Attack where the car recorded its first 11sec pass running 11.92 @ 114.22mph with a pb 60' of 1.71.

There is still a mountain of development to do on the car with the chassis, engine and suspension all being stock, or near to it. To have run an 11 already has been really surprising. :yup:

The car is a regular at WSID street meets so keep an eye out for it.

I've seen this car run a bunch of times and wondered what 60's it was pulling. 1.71 is admirable for a FWD without a million hp. Any plans to mess with the rear suspension? i.e. 1000000000000kg/mm springs etc?

Good stuff!

Yes. Suspension is definitely one area where we can get even better 60' times. But that is not our first priority. We are looking at adding a few extra ponies under the bonnet.

I forgot to mention that the 11.92 makes the car the 3rd fastest All Motor FWD in the country with only the Online CRX, 10.83, and the Alcorn AH Civic, 11.67, in front of us.

Nice. Needs a cage of some description though. That shit looks pretty flimsy?

Great work. Where is Chuck?

I don't think it needs a cage with 135kw.

How much power would it need to do a 10? And is a 10 the goal?

FWD cars all end up on their roofs sooner or later :D; their aim is surely not to run 135 kws forever?

The quality of work on this car is very good, good enough that I trust him to work on my cars!

I'm sure it will need a cage eventually, but he is about a second off that and it would add a heap of unwanted weight.

Whats the plan for more power? Compression, cams, throttles, all of the above?

I wondered why the compression was so low for an atmo motor?!

No K20 Kula. Considering the Online CRX is the quickest with the same old truck engine we have. ;)

No it won't have 135kw forever. The initial plan is throttle bodies which will have all the externals sorted and then it will be time to go inside. The first thing will be cams and see how long the bottom end lasts considering its just a wrecker engine. There is no target power, just as much as can be squeezed from it.

Yes a cage will be fitted in the future but not until it gets down to the low 11s. No point making the car go slower by adding all that weight at the moment. To get into the 10s it would have to go on more of a diet or add a fair bit more power. At a guess, 175kw at the wheels should do it. But with that will have to be a lot of development on the chassis and suspension. Likewise a change to taller tyres and a lower final drive ratio with a taller first gear is probably required.

The compression is low because, as I mentioned, the engine is standard apart from the head being shaved and the porting. A built engine would see the comp up around 13:1.

The next major outing for the car is the Jamboree next month where we will have a new sponsor. Circlework (www.circlework.com.au) have come on board for this event so we are looking at putting on a good show for them.

Anyone interested in getting some good photos from the event check out their site post event and buy up big. That way they will continue their support into the future. :)

I really like the way that he has built the car first. A lot of people start by going crazy on the motor.

The car was in Zoom magazine last month. The issue with the blue FINANC S15 on the cover.

Just over a week to Jambo and we are ready and raring to go. Should be a great weekend. :)

A little update. We managed to get 1 pass at the washed out Jambo event on the 25/26th August and ran another 11 second pass. It was 11.94 @ 112mph. We were disappointed we didn't get any more runs in as we were sure we could have improved on that time and set a new pb.

And then last night at WSID my mate ran the car instead of the apprentice (who normally drives) and managed to reel off a 1.65 sec 60'. Thats a pb 60' time by 0.06sec. Not bad for standard suspension and no wheelie bars for a fwd car.

A set of these are on their way from the US.

We can't wait to get them on the car with a new exhaust system and hopefully run closer to mid 11's.

The plan is also to run in Super Street at the WSID Bracket Attacks next year. I'm almost definite we would be the only FWD atmo car in the field. That should shake up the 6 and 8 boys. :)

Hmmmm I was thinking of running bracket attack in the 'roza. Well, with only 4 rounds of SCC racing, ya gotta do something

You should do it Chuck. Would be good to have a familiar face in the staging lanes among all the V8 Toranas, Capris and Cortinas.

Its been a while since I last updated this so here goes.

The guys have been running the car with the quads and standard headers and as expected made little difference on the dyno and to the ET and mph. What the dyno did show is that the standard headers and 2.5" exhaust was now choking the engine. At around 7,000rpn the engine would go lean and no matter how much fuel you put in it made no diifference. Add to that there was a pulsing in the inlet manifold where the pressure would fluctuate between boost and vacuum. But so it could be run at street meets thats how it stayed. Until last night.

Last night it got put back on the dyno with the open headers so it could be retuned and set up for Compak Attak on the 18th of this month. Now previously the open headers made little difference when the standard inlet manifold was on the car. All they really did was save some weight. Well last night everything changed. The car was run up and as soon as it started to make power it went real lean. Ok. Thats different. So the guys added more and more fuel until they got to the same afr's they had before. The end result....well...145kw at the wheels. Thats a 13kw increase just from the exhaust and makes 140kw+ from 7,000-8,400rpm. The peak power increase is at 6,500rpm of 15kw. The standard injectors are now maxed out so any further mods will require bigger injectors.

The interesting thing about it all is that the car is now making 40kw at the wheels more than a standard car makes, and its NA. And it is still internally standard apart from some porting and a head shave. Of course the bolt ons are the key, the open headers and the TWM ;) 50mm quad throttles. And it runs pump 98 fuel.

So at Compak Attak we are hoping for a new pb. What time are we hoping for, well better than 11.92. And we should see some more mph so over 114mph would be expected as well. We can't wait to get it on the track and give it a run. Hopefully it won't fry the tyres and will hang together. :)
