View Full Version : Datsun 120Y

Thought I'd get in the spirit of things and post up some details about my 120Y.

Engine: CA18DET, stock internals as far as I know, S15 non-roller turbo, Microtech LT10S, custom dipe pipe and 3" exhaust, PWR Cooler, Just Jap alloy radiator.
Wheels: Simmons Gold V4 15"
Diff: R31 Skyline LSD cut down.
Suspension: Reset leaf springs in the back, S13 struts in the front.
Interior: Toyota Supra leather seats (electric drivers seat), S13 dash with custom surround, carbon fiber door trims, autometer carbon fiber gauges, momo steering wheel and a few other bits and pieces.

Performance: 186rwkw on 18psi.

I bought the car a few months ago with a stock computer and TRX rims. From there i've basically cleaned it up, put my Simmons on, fitted a few Autometer gauges (not pictured), fitted venetians and had the Microtech fitted.

Plans: If anyone remembers, I used to own a Bluebird TRX with a CA18det. The engine out of that car is going in the 120Y. It has forgies, ARP head studs, GT2871R turbo, Tial gate etc etc. It made 228rwkw on 20psi. I am selling that setup, and I will be high mounting a GT3071R to this engine before it goes in :)

Behind that engine, will be a Jatco which is currently being built, which is a full house box (transbrake, reverse pattern, billet valve body etc etc), and should be done in a few weeks, and I cannot wait :D

I won the best Non-Skyline on the weekend at the Skylines Australia day, and also won a trophy for best modified car at the show up at Grenfell festival a month ago.

These shots are a little old but I sorta rushed this so more updated pics will be up this weekend..

I usually point and laugh at 120Y's but hey, that actually looks cool... :oh:

I was about 8 years old when my Dad made Mum trade her beloved 120Y in on a brand spankers 351 XD Fairmont Ghia. She still hasn't forgiven him and still refers to it as her favourite car, despite having owned a million better cars since then ?? :w:

I took the 120Y to WSID on Wednesday night (18.07.07), and ran a best time of 12.59 @ 111mph (1.88 60ft!). This is using shitty Nexen 195/50/15 tyres and full street trim. When we let some tyre pressure out to about 17psi, the thing was an ANIMAL out of the line.

The first run was just a "hold it flat" sorta run jsut to see what needs improvment, big dump off the line, mostly wheelspin, revved all the way out etc etc. It ran 13.2...a good starting point.

When I got back to the pits, the dipstick had blown out and there was oil everywhere. The breather filter had also blown off. So, we fixed that, and went out again. I shifted very early and took it easy as I was a bit paranoid, which resulted in a 13.4 with no breathing problems.

We let some tyre pressure out and went out again, left the line very hard but shifted 2nd to 5th...still ran a 13.3.

The last run left very hard again, and shifts were perfect, resulting in a 12.59@111mph. VERY happy, considering I still have another engine to put in, and an auto, with slicks...

Heres some pics, video to follow very soon...

A few more neat little touches will be going into it aswell for a full package at any event Mick enters.

Got a few updates here...

GT3071R is mounted and exhaust is done. All work was done by Stuart @ Racers Choice Performance Exhausts in Seven Hills. Tial 44mm gate is mounted underneath the turbo (not pictured). All thats left is coating of the exhaust manifold, and running the oil and water lines (which I already got from GCG Turbos). Hopefully its 4-5 weeks away from running.

Converter is 2850. Its weird, i've had it up to 15psi on the transbrake somedays, and other days I can't make over 7psi on the transbrake, no idea why.

Converter will be a bitch to change, i'll just hook a 50 shot up to the transbrake :)

Have you got a temp sensor on the sump of it..

I know with mine that onces it gets warm it takes alot longer to come up on the transbrake.

on a hot day still i can get around 10psi on the brake.

Weired, i don't know enough about auto transes to make judgment about heat of fluid to know what difference it would make.

Could it be hot day inlet temps go up and computer pulls some timing?

I have the sensor, just waiting for the gauge to come into stock! Not sure if temp makes a difference, I tried it on Saturday night and it was very cold, and it still didn't like it. I've also tried it twice in a row in a short period of time on a hot day and it came straight up over 12psi...

Yeh ofcourse it has to do with temp of oil..

Are you using a good synthetic oil...

The oil inside the converter can be 6x that in the pan so in actually fact the converter oil could be as high as 6-700 degrees.

make sure you got either -8 braide to your oil cooler and a decent size one up front..

I have an oil cooler up front, with -6 Braided line running to it, and I am running Castrol TQ Dexron III....it doesn't actually says its Synthetic on Castrol's website so it might be time for a change? They have the Transmax Z thats fully synthetic, might look into that?

13-11-07, 06:22 PM
If it is a trans heat issue then going synthetic could possibly cure the problem. At the very least you should have a more stable trans fluid for the heat demands you are putting through it.

Sorry must of missed this question!

The black steel rims that I used in the morning just have street tyres on them that I drive around on the street. The Convo Pro front runners have ET Drag front runner tyres on them, and the multispoke rims have ET Drag Slicks on them.

I don't actually have the matching Convo Pros for the back, being 4 stud they aren't really common...luckily I found the front set on Ebay.

Makes 320rwhp on 22psi. Its got a GT3076R hanging off it now. Gas is only on from 0-15psi programmed through the Eboost.

It's actually a VL Turbo Box with a CA20 (Series 3 Bluebird / Pintara) Nissan Bellhousing. The adaption wasn't too hard, we had to drill 4 holes in the flexplate and run spacers between it and the converter....only other thing we had to do is making the converter bush in the crank a little longer...apart from that, all the other shit (wiring/shifter/mounts) were just like any other conversion.

Yeah, Bluebird/VL all named the 3N71B Jatco, however mine is a 4N71B (has a 4th gear switch solenoid)

OK Update.

Slapper bars are done, racing next week (19th of August).

Took the car to Dale this morning, turned up making 308rwhp on 25psi, ended up leaving making 324rwhp @ 23psi :D Very happy, car is a weapon up top now. The gas is also programmed to turn off @ 20psi and it holds 20psi till you let the button go, cannot wait to race on Wednesday!

Thanks again Dale!

To my surprise, absolutely correct! The car left harder and went quicker when I bought it up to 3000rpm, munched the pedal (activating the NOS) and released the transbrake button. This way it drives out of the line with the Gas pumping, instead of bogging down and having the gas drive it out of the bog down... (as seen in video run 1 & 2).

I need a 4 point harness and battery isolation switch before running again, just reading the ANDRA book now in regards to harness angle behind the seat ;) I've got the bug again :rotflol:

I tried to install a ZEX Nitrous activation switch before Powercruise, which works off the TPS. The problem I had was, the stock TPS shows 0 Volts at no throttle, but show 4.5 volts from about 1/8 throttle onwards....so there is no "curve" as such...meaning the Nitrous sprays at about 1300rpm! I don't feel like wearing an inlet manifold through the windshield due to a backfire, so is there any universal TPS units I could fit which has a curve from 0 Volts at zero throttle to 5 Volts WOT?

Oscar

Yeah, but couldn't you run any old switch, like a brake light switch, so long as it receives a signal? Put the switch onto the pedal at about the same point as a brake light switch and space it enough to press against something when its at its last 10% of movement.

I just did a search for a progressive TPS switch and NOS seem to have one available on one of their kits. You might be able to just get the bits you need from them to make it work.

My corolla has a bright orange arcade machine button mounted up under the dash activatedbackwards by the throttle lever at full throttle. Its adjustable in and out of the bracket and uses a conventional microswitch, works flawlessly. My system also uses the ECU to control the gas though so have also set other parameters such as only on 3000rpm - 6000rpm, only at > certain engine vac etc

HoonBoy
07-03-10, 05:52 PM
Jaycar do an adjustable voltage switch that could read off the standard TPS, but you would be better off fixing the issues you have been having with the microswitch. It sounds like you have been activating it a bit early and putting too much pressure on the switch.

My system uses the E-Boost AUX out...same sorta deal, only works when the microswitch is activated (usually WOT), and only gives the shot untill 18psi.

Will look at Jaycar too. The switch works perfectly, and it only just clicks on full throttle so it isn't under pressure....I'd just prefer a hard wired system that will have 0.00001% percent chance of fucking up on me! I broke the actual bracket that holds the microswitch at Powercruise, caused me nothing but headaches.

Well long time between updates here, but since Jamboree Sydney this year, the car has been sitting with 1 twisted axle, and 1 snapped axle, so while the diff is out, i've decided to shorten the diff to how I like it, and order a set of Convo Pro's 4 stud in 15x8" for the rear. The wheel pictured below is a 4 stud chaser that has been widended to use as a template for the diff. It will be painted silver, and i'll get the tyres white or red walled whilst i'm waiting for the Convo's to come... The old owner had the diff shortened to suit TRX rims, and I couldn't get anything bigger than 185/60/14 when using the low leaf springs. Now, the car will sit how I like it, with a much larger choice of tyre size!

In the meantime, I'm pulling the exhaust manifold off, and using it as a jig to get another by Mike @ MX Performance. He is going to use smaller runners, which will bring the boost in a little earlier. At this point, I will fit the new Turbosmart Hyper Gate, and away we go :) In the near future I will also pull out the 50kg worth of Electronic Supra seats and settle for an adjustable racing seat, this should no doubt get me into the 10's.

The car has also run 11.01 @ 122mph at best (this was ages ago).

Once the diff is done, i've gotta get some decent leaf springs, and then run the thing. The seats won't be in yet but i'm confident in a 10 with the new rear end and non leaking/cracked exhaust manifold.

Back again. Long story short, the small runner manifold didn't work, lost about 50rwhp, so I had another one made, and the car picked up 800rpm better response, and made 330rwhp on 26psi. Also fitted some Caltracs to the rear a few weeks ago, and ran a 10.84 @ 125mph on Wednesday night.

The car has no cage so I pulled the boost back to 22psi for Jamboree yesterday, ran a best of 11.11 @ 122mph on 22psi. Didn't stop my red-lighting first round but what can you do

The car picks the wheels up, and then unloads the tyres for a bit, so I need to speak to Calvert Racing in the US and find out if the Caltracs need more load or less on the spring. Either that or ask Vin Diesel, he has spun tyres and wheelstood at the same time before.

Real Per4mance
01-04-12, 08:52 AM
Also I have found that street radials are quite inconsistent...one pass yesterday the car did not turn a tyre and picked the wheels up, then the next pass it left soft and wheelspun, not one change was made!
