Has been a while that i've been on here, figured i should put something up..

This is my 1986 Mazda HBES 929 Turbo. Has a SOHC 8-valve FE 2litre engine, with an IHI RHB6 variant bolted on(also has different pistons/rods/cam/etc). The factory fuel injection system on these engines is a joke. I've spent over 18months with a mate's (paull) help, trying to get it running right, and it's still hosed. UPDATE: issue has now been corrected. Many thanks to oldcorollas!

I have an IHI VF11(i think, i've had it laying around a while) waiting to go in, once i get the fuel injection sorted.. will also install a water/air intercooler at the same time. Longer-term i'll fit the multi-point EFI from the NA engine, and probably a wolf ecu to run it all.

The wheels are a recent addition(2 days ago!), bought mainly because they're around 10KG/wheel lighter than the standard 15" rims.

The car was purchased with the exhaust that is currently on it, which consists of a cat, a 3-foot resonator, and some horrid muffler, which is going to be replaced in the next few weeks. Still not sure what type of tips to get for it.. was thinking two short 3" dumps, set further back under the bumper.

The paint is a bit.. second-hand.. but a mate's brother owns an automotive paint supply shop, so.. ;)

Probably next on the list will be the suspension, then do something about the front brakes. Not sure what i'm going to do on that front.. If anyone has any ideas, i'm all ears.

(I need to take a newer pic of the dash, as it's changed a bit.)

Thats cool, I had a 87 626 sedan turbo years ago with the same donk, for some reason ive always found this 929's cool :D

Heh i'm waiting for Jon to see this and make some smart-arse remark about it :P

Yeah, the 626's had the advantage of being a-few-hundred-kg lighter than the HB 929. It's not what one would call "fast" off the line..

Used to have a 929 2 door, was a lot of fun. Yours is looking good :)

Hey anton, haven;t seen anyone do work on one of the old turbo 4's in these cars in years. only one I saw that was very modified was in a Zoom magazine about 8 years ago, maybe more.

I have a HBES Hardtop, look for the thread titled "929" in this PF streetcars section, I have also done brakes and suspension to it.

Chad

P.s. can't imagine it being hundreds of kilos heavier than supernaf's 626. Mine was quoted at 1280 kilos, even on the scales with me (90 kilos) in it at willowbank it was 2900lb or something, and it had a bit of stuff in it still. That equates to 1300 odd kilos. With the standard motor though they were not quick!!!! (i had the auto aspirated 4 cylinder)

Updade: The engine issue has been sorted. After 2+ years of replacing everything in sight, it turns out the the AFM wasnt getting enough power(thanks for the suggestion, oldcorollas). Ran a new power feed, car now runs like it came from the showroom.

Chad: Awesome, i'll check the link out.

Re: weight - I'd read in a few places that the dry weight for the car was close-on 1400KG. Im more than happy to be proved wrong on that one heh.

Ok, here's a more updated pic of the dash:

Not entirely happy with how everything is mounted currently, as it makes seeing the fuel and water temp gauges a bit.. interesting. Will probably integrate the tacho into the instrument cluster and move the shift-light.

Chad: Interesting idea using the S4/5 RX7 parts. I'd thought about that a few years ago. Might have to start gathering some parts and giving it a whirl. 245mm front rotors don't really cut it..

I do love the shape of those things (In 2 door form - Sorry Chad!)

Not sure why you need a monster tach in front of the perfectly good factory Tacho ?

Then again I dont know why the standard Pop out (Home stereo style) cassette deck has been replaced with a CD player... :)

The stock tacho leaves a bit to be desired. The first LED is for 0-750rpm. The second LED is for 750-1,000. The next three LEDs are for 1,000-1,500rpm.. it's annoying. 4,000rpm-6,000rpm is represented by four(!) LEDs.. not a great deal of resolution.

The aftermarket tacho isn't actually that big, more that the instrument cluster doesn't have much height to it, and it's on a weird angle, etc etc. For example, the boost gauge on the left is only 2" diameter..

Heh, the stock sound system isnt actually that bad. It's a clarion-sourced unit, with 4x25w amplifiers in the boot, with two 4" two-way speakers in the front and two 6" two-way speakers on the rear shelf! Not bad for something built in the mid-80's.

yeah, teh sound system was ahead of its time then, but way behind evena cheapy now.

Just get a shift lite and a basic tacho Anton, you never look at he tacho, especially when giving it herbs. The shift light means you just shift in time. Once you get used to the sound the engine makes, you won't really need that.

SR20TRX: i like the 2 door shape as well mate. Not offended at all.

Yeah, that's a fair point. I could just piss the tacho off all-together and use a shift-light set for 5,800 or some such. Would clear up the instrument cluster a bit. I dont much want to start sprouting gauges all over the dash, as that's just asking for trouble..

I have the workshop and wiring manuals that covers these models, will check what the quoted weight for them is in that.

Well, after getting the injection sorted out, it would appear that the stock turbo is.. lacking. Might be time to throw the VF11 on me thinks..

Does teh vf11 bolt straight on? or is it needing to be modified?

Anton

It has the same bolt pattern as the RHB6, so mounting to the exhaust manifold will be straight-forward. I'm not sure about the exhaust housing->dump pipe yet, will play that one by ear.

well have fun with it then.
putt he biggest turbo on you can, you will love it.

Heh i think the vf11 will suffice for a while ;) Will try and get it fitted within the next couple of weeks.

Ok, it's been awhile coming, but after much procrastination, the new hybrid turbo has been fitted, along with an Exedy heavy-duty clutch.

The turbo is an IHI VF-10 core, fans and intake housing, with the stock IHI VJ-7 exhaust housing(both turbos use the same exhaust fan). Spent many hours grinding out the wastegate hole(from 13mm to 18mm). After fitting the turbo to the exhaust manifold, it became obvious just how tiny the stock VJ-7 is. The oil dipstick, turbo oil lines, water lines and the banjo connectors all had to be massaged to come close to lining up. The dipstick especially, had to have alot of work done to it, to move it out of the way of the intake housing. As a rough guestimation, i'd wager on the VF-10 intake housing being around 50% larger. This should be interesting...

Motor goes back in tomorrow, so i'll post some pictures up after it's done.
