View Full Version : Mazda MX5 SE Prod Sports Racer
I've got a couple of pics now so here they are. Car is an 2004 factory turbo SE purchased as a write off from Japan and reborn so to speak as a racer over the past 12 months. So far, I've been lucky enough to win my first ever race at Oran a couple of weeks ago and came 3rd in class at Qld last weekend at the V8 supports. Times so far; Oran was a 1:21 and QR was a 1:22. More to come I suspect.

Love it mate, gorgeous car... ;)
On the topic of MX-5's, i was seriously thinking of offloading the kart for something like this to get back into racing -
http://www.my105.com.au/classified.asp?id=6924
Any thoughts or ideas on the car ?? I was hoping that the MX-5 would be cheaper to run than trying to build an I.P car from scratch...
Cheers,
Paul...
This thing is so awesome. :)
Paul, that car was sold to a guy in Brisbane ages ago.
Cal.
Thanks Paul (and Cal of course!). MX5s are the next big category in NSW. When we get 15 cars, we are very keen to get our own category. They should be heaps cheaper than IPRA cars - especially if we follow the QLD lead class and control component wise. The racing was great on the weekend and we need more of it in NSW.:)
Impressive car and great lap time at QR!
Looks much better with a bumper on it. :D

That is very nice. Out of interest what are these cars like for larger units. I'm about 6'3' to 6'4' and I was thinking leg length would be an issue for me.
A race car of some description is becoming more & more attractive.
Great car CT, looks the business and times arent half bad. Good stuff

Shouldnt have sold the RX yet...
Looks good.
How did you decide on that wing profile?
Zac, the wing profile was basicly what I got a good deal on. This one is a buddy club one which is quite popular with the JDM boys and is about the right size for the car. I tested lots of aero stuff on the old car and the rear wing makes the car noticeably better in faster corners. In these pics it was set quite high, I lowered the angle at QR last weekend and it's aero affect into turn 1 was still there.
Fly - as for taller units, you can run them without a roof which gains headroom. As for leg room, with a seat on the floor and adjusting the height of the steering column, I'd say you'd be half a chance. It would be cosy though. :)

Cheers mate. I'd like to see a cost effective category with close racing that isn't at HQ speed... :)

I am 6'5" and I drove an MX5 to summernats from melbourne with a mate a couple of years back (hire car - we got mad burnout vids in Fyshwick...yes they will do burnouts if you flick them around enough) and yeah it was a squeeze but you can fit in them.
