Figured it was about time to do a build thread, even though tis a bit late.. but im about to do a bit more work, so i figured now is good.

At the time i decided to embark on this project, i was driving an VU SS ute, a black one... which I'd got because i wanted something to do some traveling in, and it was awesome for that, (i had an evo'd GSR before that for those that don't know) but it spent a lot of time back at holden, which quite frankly sucked, and while it handled quite nicely, i wanted something smaller..

So i went on the hunt for a small jap ute, to put a big engine in, i decided to go 1J for price Vs abuseablity, I consulted PF gods about what kind of ute to get and most seemed to be of the opinion that the luxes were the pick of the bunch (i'd pretty much narrowed it to a triton or lux extra cab).

I decided i wanted a YN57 lux, in auto, so i started looking.. which was a long fricken search, i'd sold the SS, and because of some c*nts at a remuneration packaging firm, i had not done enough km, so what i sold it for over what i owed - the extra FBT i had to pay, i had not that much cash.. so i couldn't really go and lash out on an already mini-trucked version.. anyway, after looking at probably 10 at different car yards, private sales etc across NSW etc, i found one on ebay....

These were the pics.

http://www.sl666.net/cars/hilux/pf/ebay_lux3.jpg

And at like 1am one morning, it became mine for the princely sum of $921.23.

It had no brakes and we had to trailer it from picton, where it hadn't been rego'd for a while... like 3 years.. but driven regularly.

and thus

When i got it home it didn't look too bad, bit of rust where they usually get it, but quite frankly, not in the same ballpark as some of the "rust free" versions people had been selling for like 4K+

I tried to make it as sleeper as possible, which meant water:air, with heat exchanger hidden, and a big trans cooler with a 8" thermo on it.

anyway, back to it..

After it was running, it needed some new brakes in a fairly serious way...

It got a hoppers stoppers kit, 300mm BA disks and PBR sport calipers, stops really well.

handy though

http://www.sl666.net/cars/hilux/pf/DSC00831.JPG

made decent power, on a 30deg day stock boost.

http://www.sl666.net/cars/hilux/pf/dyno.JPG

Then it got the lock-rite 'lokka' diff centre, engineered and legal etc..

then i had fun - motorkhana's

http://www.sl666.net/cars/hilux/pf/PA080040.JPG
body roll was an issue

as was parking ability on my behalf.
http://www.sl666.net/cars/hilux/pf/PA080071.JPG

It then got lowered a bit in the back (like 4in) with springs and new shocks all around.

Just before summernats i finishe painting and putting most of the other bits back on, i can't find any photo's of that.. so these photo's kinda show it looking a bit more worn than it was with fresh paint...

you can see like 2 seconds of it in the pizza summernats special :)

It still gets used as a ute... so the hammertone gets scratched.. you get that.. its a daily..

future plans...

I have a pair of turbo's sitting on my loungeroom floor.. just "ebay steelies" factory turbo's with steel wheels, aparently they are good for a bit more boost.. its more of a maintenance thing, but i am planning to wind some more boost into it when they are done.. going to get/make some dumps i think.

Awesome! Looks like a lot of fun to drive (though looks a bit like it could do with a watts link or something in the hillclimb vid).

Its not as bad now that its been lowered, but its still not good :P i have a sway bar here waiting for the motivation, however i suspect it might not like where the heat-exchanger sits.

to be honest, its too low in the back, hooks up better, but i suspect it will go back up an inch, before i go mucking around with the rear suspension too much more, i should think about getting to a drag strip to see how it goes there.. it gets some wicked tramp occasionally, on wet/dry combo roads.. and its pretty lethal (but not as bad as it was) on surface change..

Its good enough to need more power now.

GSRman
14-08-07, 08:49 PM

Good work dude, nice truck.

GSRman
15-08-07, 11:55 AM
Yep, before i did it, everyone was telling me how easy it will fit... they lie.

with the engine as far back as we dare put it, there was 40mm from the back of the rad support panel (flat area, not the bar at the top) to the front of the pulleys.

I'm now severely stuck in the 'where to go' dilemma..

Thats why I've gone for the 'eghey steelies' when i dropped the exhaust for summernorks it was blowing weed from what we assume to be the turbo seals.. (along with sounding like the turbine wheels were missing blades) and along with buying the other toy (bike) I'm stuck because i don't know where to go from here..

You should really get some 4wd guards for it. They look the shiznit. I just so happen to have some brand new ones for sale for 80 bucks the pair. :D

BTW nice ride :)

top project mate. I especially like the WTA cooler

If traction is a problem then just get some trailer guards and tub the tray. And then a 4 link plus a falcon wrecker watts link and you're laughing.
These things are much easier in a ute, since it doesn't matter about cutting up the tray to fit. Of course that money tree might need a little watering first!

I used to have a 91 xtra cab that I thought about putting a 1j in. But with no money/skills to do it, then I bought my 69 merc instead.

GSRman
10-10-07, 11:36 AM
I recon there's enough room for 285 drag radials under there before i need to touch the guards.

its nicely overpowering (but not frustratingly so) the current tires.

does it do better skids now??

GSRman
07-04-08, 03:38 PM
not really.. either because of the boost leak, or because the turbo's don't boost as early, takes a bit longer on the brake to come up.

but i've also only gone as high at 11.9psi on the eboost..

10sec_rx7

no engine this week... :P

and there was a few too many questions and lack of time to attempt it..

when i went to put it back together i noticed that one of the rubber hoses in the inlet was cactus and blocking the inlet quite a bit.. as such it now goes better higher in the revs.

GSRman
07-02-10, 08:49 PM
not yet.. (haven't even g-teched it), been too busy driving it to work everyday for the last two years :P

have accrued some parts.. shift kitted trans, 3000rpm stall, stuff like that, just getting around to putting it in - its also manually button shifted now because the trans controlling part of the ECU decided to play up.

currently plan is dodgy "Y" pipe from the stocker manifolds into the new turbo, run it up and see if it goes lean or stays ok, go from there.
