View Full Version : Dodge Viper GTS - 56K beware!!
Had a dream come true this weekend (september 07) - picked up an immaculate '98 Dodge Viper GTS, naturally in viper red. One of the main reasons I up and moved to the US was to get something like this, one day :)
Still getting to know it, a process I'm sure will continue for some time, but it's everything I want in a toy car. 2 seats, low, loud, crazy performance and styling, impractical, harmful to the environment and can take about two cases of beer in luggage space.
1998 Red Viper GTS coupe
- 14,500 miles
- viper red, black leather interior
- 8 liter v10, factory forged pistons and lumpy cam, more so than the 99 onwards.
- signed engine, this car was a pace car at a nascar event in '99
- no ABS, no traction control, in fact no driver aids whatsoever unless you count power steering.
- Penske 3 way adjustable coil overs
- smooth runners, K&N intake, borla dual 3.5" exhaust, upgraded & wrapped 5 into one headers, short shifter
- about $4K sunk into a beautiful stealth stereo install by the previous owner, amp under drivers seat and moulded fiberglass single 8" sub in the 'boot'. mid's and highs in the doors.
the thing is immaculate inside and out - I don't think the wipers have ever been used. To say I'm happy with it is an understatement.
Now for some pics! Sorry for the mix of sun and shade, i've been busy but will find the time to get it to a nice location and update the photos.
[edit - had to add in some decent pics, those old ones are shit]

Outrageous. Love it. How are the brakes?
That thing is so damn huge...
Does it do single spinner skids ? :rotflol:
Fuck man, your wife FTW for letting you buy that.
Awesome. Skid pics ASAP!!!!
Who's signed the donk?
Not sure. I know nothing of Nascar. Next time im under there I'll see if I can decipher it - I might even try to track down the actual event and see if there's any pictures
May we ask how much?
GTS's can be had here anywhere from ~ $45K to $60K, depending on condition and miles... I got a good deal on this with a motivated seller. If I wanted to I think I could sell it for more than I paid, not that I'm interested.
Outrageous. Love it. How are the brakes?
they're ok, pretty big. Honestly could be better. Pedal is hard and they really do a good job if you push em hard enough, but im thinking of putting the SRT/10 brakes onto it eventually. Massive tyres helps a lot :)
Fuck man, your wife FTW for letting you buy that.
You're telling me!! she likes it though :)

wasnt the roof raised so you could easily wear a helmet in them? (edit---i just re-read your first paragraph)
very impressive either way.

Love it. Fucking love it.
Oh, it is red. I thought it was some sort of bright orange from your other thread... okay, it doesn't stand out quite so much now then... ;)
Should have 'blipped' the throttle while moving it into the garage. And by blipped i mean revved it nicely. Still wouldn't buy one, but damn, sure would like to have a drive of one. Then maybe buy one.

Wow. Coolest car on PF (outside of Q's 356)? Surely would have to make the top 3 or so? :D

yeah i know. It's definatly red. I'll have to get it in full sun for some pictures, possibly using a non point-n-shoot POS camera might help too.
bastard. I have wanted a Viper since I was 12 and saw the prototype in magazines.
Nice work. The GTS is loads cooler than than the RT10 and red is the best colour too.

Yeah I reckon. The first I ever learnt about a Viper was a million years ago when wheels I think did a 427 cobra Vs RT/10 Viper comparo, and once I saw that thing I was sold.
I have 5 1/18 scale models sitting on top of the book case in the lounge room - black, yellow and red RT/10s, a white with blue stripes GTS/R and a blue with white stripes GTS. Sigh. One day.
BTW - any of you Brisbane guys have around 60k spare there is a red RHD 92 year model RT/10 at "Gas sports cars" on Breakfast creek rd. I touch myself indecently while sitting in my car waiting for the lights to change every afternoon :)

I'll get you some more pics... Car's at the detail shop at the moment and im heading to seattle for a week, can do it when I get back. Yes I think they are a 12 sec 1/4 stock, and it does a nice job of pinning you back in the seat :)
we need skid/speed vids
give it time :) got it almost accidently sideways today, almost like i hit some oil or something... but once you exceed the grip at the rear it's pretty quick to come out
thats awesome! gonna bring it home one day?
that's the intent - im looking into it. Right now im happy just owning it, but I'd love to bring it back one day. its 20% tax, then 25% lux tax (if applicable, im hoping to avoid it), freight and conversion fees (~$30-35K) if I want to register it...

I thought that might get mentioned! thats BrisBANE as in the 'bane of the universe.' Crazy yanks. If you land and SFO and head north on 101 you'll find it, right next to monster park :)

yeah no kidding, it's definately a no frills interior. seems like neither the yanks nor the japs can hold a candle to europe for a quality interior (my GTi is much nicer). I'm a sucker for white backed dials though, they were all the rage when the WRX started doing them, unfortunately all the korean mftgs followed suit...
Doesn't it have power brakes?
oh yeah it has brakes :) ABS didn't come till 2001 I believe though, not that this thing is going to see much rain...
had a chance to finally get under the thing, change the oil etc etc. was some interesting shit to see really. Quite a challenge too, as it turns out it's barely 4" off the ground, a bit lower than normal, and regular floor jacks just don't fit.
ended up using a combination of a wheel jack and scissor jack to get it off the floor and get jack stands under it. will be easier next time, I've picked up the full 2" service manual for it and figured out the center jack point now :)

http://www.jibbajabber.net/viper/DSCN1651.JPG
The frame on this thing is freakin massive. I've heard that they're one of the stiffest chassis in any car, but barnyard engineering must have it's benefits, looks like they've welded a few railway girders together.
First one here is the right hand side
http://www.jibbajabber.net/viper/DSCN1661.JPG
And this impressed me a lot, the oil pan and block are just exceptionally clean - in fact the whole underside of the car really seems like it's lived up to a very low mile, no rain type of environment in the last 9 years! But yes, the chassis does look pretty stiff :)
http://www.jibbajabber.net/viper/DSCN1659.JPG
It also has some of the cleanest brake ducting i've ever seen. Not sure if it's a factory part (looks like it) or if the previous owner put it in for some track activities. Just under the front bar this is bolted in with ducting running to the front discs:
http://www.jibbajabber.net/viper/DSCN1657.JPG
Where it goes to:
http://www.jibbajabber.net/viper/DSCN1660.JPG
and on the other side - the suspension isn't vertical, it's at ~ 30 deg angle... man I can't wait to get it out for a track day some time soon
http://www.jibbajabber.net/viper/DSCN1662.JPG
and I finally managed to take a shot of it in full sun. Don't mind my old man hanging around in the background, on his first trip to the US :)

No, it definately gets attention, a little too much some time (people honking, waving, cameras out etc), certainly makes me careful where, if at all, I park it. They're rare enough that I've only ever seen 3 beyond mine in the ~ 18 months I've lived here, and every time i fill it up someone has come up and talked to me about it. For example, they only made 781 GTS's in 1998 for the US market, and 341 RT/10's (verts). Which also makes parts for it nice and cheap as you can imagine. I think a water pump for the donk is $800.

Congratulations all the way mate. That is very nice. I thought they still had the exhausts coming out from underneath the doors?
The Rt/10 is fo shizzle personally, you got the right colour though! I've always wanted one ever since they had it in MOTOR years ago, long before I ever had a license. They had a picture of one a few months later, red RT/10 on a dry lake bed, with all the mud cracked underneath it. Car Pron!!!! First time I've ever wanted to make love to something that wasn't female.
I think the article was with the world's fastest cars, had the Callaway Corvette as number one at the time. It should still be up in my cupboard with all my other dreams. (doesn't take long to lose track does it).
But congrats all round. You worked hard and got what you wanted. I didn't realise they weren't too expensive so maybe I should get off my arse and start saving for mine :).
I thought they still had the exhausts coming out from underneath the doors?
yes, they did, then they stopped it mid 1996 (went to the rear like mine) then they started it again with the SRT/10, and the new 2008 has sidies aswell. the pipes still run through the same spot (gets fucking hot, gotta try not to burn your calf when you get out).
in my continuing efforts to take the car apart very slowly, i changed the battery over the weekend. not exactly as easy as you might think, given it's behind the left rear wheel and splash guard.
The rear type, the space saver, and my new battery.

hey mate, you weren't on a viper run 2 weekends ago were you? we ran into about 70 vipers at Hearst Castle on the California coast, and one of them, which looked like yours, had an aussie flag sticker on the back window. Wasn't you by any chance was it?

nope, not factory, they're a bonus. Fully serviceable, bump/rebound and height adjustable. im pretty much dying to get some time to get it to thunderhill raceway.
hey mate, you weren't on a viper run 2 weekends ago were you?
thanks for the pics! I was very nearly on that cruise, it was the viper club, and I very much want to drive out there, it's not *too* far from where I live. My old man was in town, and I'm not sure he would have done too well crammed into the front seat with my wife :) Decent sort of car club, you have to own one to be a member, and they just raffled off the 1st production '08 viper comp. coup, $100 tickets.
had to update some of the photos on the first post, the original ones sucked ass.
I now have track dates booked for sear point (infineon raceway) and thunderhill park (http://www.thunderhill.com/html/about_us.html), and trying to decide if i want to take it to laguna seca or not.
fire extinguisher is in, I just want to add tow hooks and alloy PS bracket and it should be good to go - if it ever stops raining here.

Viper - WIN
That is all.
Shamelessly ripped from the thread I started in General,
So the car has been up on jack stands for a couple weeks while I work through a major service on it - tranny, diff, clutch, brake, power steer, cooling, all the fluids changed, K&N's cleaned and re oiled etc etc - did the plugs/leads/filters a while back.
digging into the suspension i notice all my front upper/lower control arm grease boots are cracked, although the car doesn't see water and there's plenty of grease in there i want that shit fixed. A quick consult to the service manual and I don't want to start trying to disconnect control arms, so I need to find a shop to do it for me. Also it's missing the removable sport shims on the mounts for the upper control arm - consequently running about -2 deg camber on the front, steers nice but is chewing the fuck out of my tyres, so i wanted a set of those..
Consulting the intarweb tells me that Valaya racing down in San Jose are the only game in town, and the owner spent 25 mins yakking to me on the phone about it, I book it in and im on the road at 5:15am yesterday for the 2.5 hr drive down attempting to bypass most of the shit traffic.
turn up at Valaya racing (before they open) kind of an innocuous looking place next to the HP Pavillion arena:

Good bunch of guys - normally in the US businesses hate customers in the workspace for insurance/liability reasons, I was hanging around under the car and they talked me through a lot of stuff, they support most of the viper race teams so really know their shit. Same type of place as most mechanics, i was sitting in the office about to folk over the plastic and a guy comes in and this exchange happens:
'Where the fuck is Steve??'
shrug 'dunno'
'Did he get fuckin arrested at the court house yesterday'
'nah, dunno'
'jesus fucking christ...'
anyway...

yeah thats exactly what I use it for. Lift the wheel, stick blocks under it. then use the trolley jack to get it up onto stands, reverse to lower.

Thanks for the links.
what are you talking about, jumper? i only wear knitted sweaters.
ball joints are covered with heat protection, same shit they use on the race cars, prevents them cracking from the brake heat on the track (exactly what happened to my old ones)

Nice
ok so its been a while coming but I finally got it out to the track. On Monday I went with a good non-profit racing org to thunderhill raceway (www.thunderhill.com), a SCCA owned track in northern california. It's quite the track, and we ran it reverse direction which gives higher top speeds, but its a big bitch to figure out in a day with 3 miles, 14 turns, and two blind crests-into-turns as well as some tricky back to backs with decreasing radius, off camber elements to it. But only one wall, a 2 month-old resurfacing and lots of run off, good deal.
I ran in group A, as one of the few people in that group with street tires. Lots of cashed up old guys, many GT3's, a new Z06 on full hoosiers and suspension/brakes, maserati's, fezzas and even a couple stock cars that sounded epic. I pretty much just took it as a shakedown, took some rudimentary timing and learned a lot about the car on the limit. Started with WAYY too much pressure in the tires (and a cold morning) so it was slidey as shit to start with, but dropping pressures and a warming track worked well and i felt a lot more confident attacking some of the turns. Pretty high speed, they got the gun on me at 135mph and I saw 145 in the last session right before i boiled the bejesus out of the brakes.
The Penske 8100 coil overs need a rebuild or service, and possibly a revalve based on what i felt - I had the remotes up to full hard (they're a minor adjustment compared to the valving in the main shock) and it could have been a bit stiffer - there was another GTS there on stock suspension and while it was a lot better turning than his car it could be better. Next time i'll have some cheapo rims and r-specs, i was running full slicks in australia on my old car and really miss it now. Also some new pads and rotors (I think the rotors are originals) and fluid, plus pulling out the pivot bar sport shims to give it another 1deg neg camber on the front, drop the springs a touch (but have to make a trammel bar and set the toe) and it should drop some major time. Power wasn't an issue, the back end definately demanded a smooth application of the right foot coming out of corners and watch the lift-off oversteer :)
overall well run day, had nearly 3 hours of track time for $180. I will get a in-car timer, I was a bit lost in the afternoon without knowing which lines i was trying were being faster or not, but the whole thing was meant to be a learning experience in the car and with this group (unlimited passing in group A) but that will come next time. some pics!

Awesome - after I get my degree I wouldn't mind working in the US for a year or two, getting something similar (newer maybe?) and bringing it back - good thing about WA - you are allowed to drive LHD cars legally!!
I think I need to get rich and move to America... :yup:
Nice work mate!
because I care and I think it was asked for about a year ago, here's a skid vid from the weekend.
go easy, I know I suck at it but 345's are expensive and I left plenty of rubber on the road.. this was 1/2 way into a 2 hour canyon run on an AWESOME repaved, very seldom used road near my place. filmed it with the go pro from a couple angles, need to edit and slap together sometime. This was just 'here film this,' I'll get a better vid sooner or later.

Well? Don't make me declare a fucking jihad or something
heh i haven't had the chance to pull together the footage just yet... had visitors for a month and been on the go constantly, barely been able to get onto PF.
I'll pull it together sooner or later. bought a couple more cars that have kept me busy...
car is still going, it wasn't me that crashed in the video section :)

so I went and did an autocross on the weekend, was a fuck load of standing around all day on a hot airfield with no shade trying to figure out what was going on, followed by a few runs on the track that made up for it. good fun, will do again, was just there for the giggles this time, next time I might try to walk the track and memorize it first :)
