Getting close to time for an upgrade , looking for something around 00-03 model , sports bike obviously , no nakeds or tourers.
Im 6' 70kg , and want something i can throw around fairly easily ( my current ride , yam FZR750 is excellent , but chasing more power ) and get good mileage from.

Top of the list is an R1 , but im open to thoughts on something else i may have overlooked ( ZX10 looks inviting as well )

any pro's/cons to different bikes?

For what its worth, I was in a similar position, upgrading from a ZXR750, Kwaka fan so test rode the '03 ZX9R and an '04 ZX10R.

The ZX10R was awesome in every way, but not practcal as 90% of the time it would be a commuter. I rode the ZX9R and loved it, comfortable, plenty of power, so I bought it.

Ride them all and pick the one that fits you best, upgrading from an FZR, you will be suitably impressed by all the latest offerings.

you really have to test ride them to get you're on view on what they are like

the zx10 is ok, but its behind its competition in terms of handling.
not as sharp as the gsxr1000/r1, if you are heading that way.

Second hand info but a dude I work with with has a 05 CBR1000 blade and loves it. Reckons its fun and easy to ride. He's ridden R1's and hates em.

They're all good Gus. You can't really go wrong with any of the later thou's.

Nips mentioned that the ZX10 weren't as sharp as the others - that's probably not quite accurate, they are probably sharper.. overly sharp when punting at 10/10ths due to some very agressive geometry - specifically the rear end. Having said that, most riders wouldn't get fast enough to really notice. If you like a bike that feels fast and feels alive, then maybe the ZX10 is for you.

GSXRs seem to feel short to me to sit on (which I like) but you're bigger than me. The R1s seem to polarise some people with the way they ride and I actually prefer the looks of the 05 model over the current one. Most people seem to get on pretty well with the blade - mine's an 05, which again I reckon looks better than the current one.

Sit on em, ride em, pick a colour :)

this kinda sums me up , I power thru corners , no matter how rough they are ( ever come out of compton rd onto beaudesert rd heading towards bris under heavy throttle? )

I like to scrape my boots ( doesnt happen that often as i run the hardest compound tyres i can buy ) around corners and like to basically "BLAT" everywhere , bike feels safer when full tank of fuel is onboard , but can handle it when empty as well..
What i really want is enough power to lift the front wheel with minimal effort , and hit 300 on open roads.. I know most bikes will do this , but finding one that will also be a good , light , around town commuter is also needed ( and easy to lift for the occational stationary drop - not that i really want that to happen anyway ) , also , BIG factor , is pillion seating.. i tend to carry people a bit ( bitches only ) for a quick blat , but have done a couple of trips involving more than 3 hours at a time ( have gone to armidale , down to coffs , and back to bris for a "ride" ) , so pillion seating has to have some sort of "comfort" with it as well.

Ta for the suggestiongs , will be shopping hopefully within the next few weeks..

also , whats the gearboxes like in these aforementioned bikes? i hear suzuki's have issues with 2nd ( i think it was suzi's )

i stand by the lack of feel/sharpness of my zx10.
found my r1 and r6 to be better. in standard form.

gearboxes.. cant really talk about the suzukis, but after my yamahas got a few kilometres, they got a bit sloppy compared to the zx10 'box.

also- worth a mention, you're height is similar to mine. i suit the zx10/r1 alot better than the cbr/gsxr. personal opinion of course.

Yeah fair enough nips - Guess it depends what you mean by sharp - most people associate sharp with quick (as opposed to accurate). As for accuracy, the R1 should take that one over the ZX10 I agree. And any 600 will steer better than a thou ;)

I still remember when first testing my ZX6RR racebike at Broadford, the guys had their new ZX10s out for the first time and were struggling big time. The quickest way down the back straight for them was to wheelie over the crest and put the front down just in time to brake.. Angry.. angry bike. But some people reckon they're awesome on the street!

Gus - yep it sounds like the big bike is for you - just be aware that it'll be a fair bit quicker than the 750 ;)

As for gearboxes, I'm pretty sure they have them sorted now, but Suzuki did have some issues with the earlier thous.

Well i looked at the brand new cbr1000 yesterday, hopefully going back for a test ride in a couple of weeks. Ive never ridden a bike that big, so a little nervous to say the truth but when your 6'1 @ 105kg, the smaller bikes feel wrong.

I also sat on a new r1 and gsxr1000, but the cbr felt a lot more comfortable. will post reports if i go for my test ride.

I see from your avatar you ride in a T-shirt. An R1 would be perfect.

hehehe dont forget the shorts.. that shot was taken on a crappy corner @ 120 , i usually do wear my jacket n gloves ( denim jeans ) , but wasnt planning on photos that day , mate of mine just bought a suzi 600 , went for a ride , it was terrible , sat "on" the bike , and felt very top heavy on it around corners, my yammy , you seem to sit in it a lot more , hence being able to throw it around a lot more. I find its terriffic to pick up and throw into the next corner with little effort , hence looking for something light and manoeverable for the next ride.

I'll go test riding soon , just dont wanna piss the sales guys off when i try lots of different bikes , then obviously find the best deal , and also want to have a decent time on it , like check it for comfort etc , see how long it takes before my wrists ache.

Cheers for all the imput.. wasnt expecting this much help

Hmmm you want a bike that pulls the front wheel up easy, will do 300 on open roads, can carry a pillion and you wear t shirt and shorts for rides where you "only" corner at 120.

dealers are more than happy to let you test ride bikes back to back.

dont think you're wasting time.. just do it

ease up cowboys...

Im not some 18 y.o guy who just discovered how to use his wang.. The only reason i want something more powerful is to know the power is there.. I have only been riding for about 4 years on the road , but my youth was on acreage down south on ag bikes.. im mid 30's so i have a reasonable idea how to ride safely..

And anyway.. isnt anyone riding a bike a candidate?? hence "temporary aussie" ????

boy i can see this is going to head downhill , hope the brakes are up to it

My mate has a 2004 ZX10R (the good looking one). A bit of suspension fiddle plus a steering damper sorts the handling issues out. A steering damper is a MUST.

Vicko
16-11-07, 09:40 AM
Re sorting the handling issues - Depends how hard you push them RJ.. ;)
For non track stuff - yep it should be ok - just flighty.. on track / 9/10ths and up they get hairy.

Meh I entered some competition when i-robot came out for a fireblade 1000 and it claimed vtec, I had done no further research to suss out how valid that was since.

what vicko said:yup:i own an 03 r1 and while it's not as deadly as the 99-01's it still has caused some concern out of corners, low gear, to much gas, shit that was close:eek:.a great bike if you pick to higher gear into a corner or in most occasion,it just pulls itself out wonderfully.i also rod a 04 and 06 gsxr 1000 when i bought the r1,the 06 was :)great but was 2 grand more than i wanted to pay.the 04 gixxer had 33 thou on the clock but rode and handled as well as my r1 (the k's killed it for me)i sold a 95 gixxer for the r1 and still consider the gixxers 750 and 1000's (post 2000) the best sports bikes imho but have'nt ridden a blade so can't comment on them.the kwaka's are insane wheelie machines.:yup:

I just bought a ZX12R
Torque is great. Dont have to rev it
come out of corners at 2000 and 1/4 throttle. Yum.
Confortable. look the shit.

Go for the gsxr 1000. ive owned 5 02 models and love them, they make a good 10 rwhp more than the r1. Blades are ok but you wanted 01-03 so that only leaves you with the 954 which is gutless if not a good looking bike.
zx10s are nice and very agressive but they didnt come out till 04. ive ridden all 4 both on the track and on the road.

aslo judging by the way you ride and the fact that you put the hardest tyres you can on. id be riding in nothing less than full leathers. soft good qual tyres are cheap insurance!
