POS corona build.

well i thought since i'm going to be doing this all the hard way i thought i would give you guys an inside veiw to my frustrations.

car = 1982 corona stock with some free rust. 1X engine and 3 speed auto.

The plan = to build a CHEEP car to have fun in. evens like skidpans, motorkahana's and katakahana's.

Budget = no much. at uni doesn't help the budget but it means i'll be able to build better cars later on. this stage working around 2K.

Thoughts = put a better engine in it, a better gearbox, weld the diff, go racing. Later on i'll consider brake and suspention upgrades. race seats. cage.

1/11/07 - First day of project "pieceofshitthaticangoracingin"

looked around for possible engine and did some reading to find an engine that i could flog all day and really not care to much about. and that was common so there are a million spare parts around.

also try and track down a gearbox for it.

7/11/07 - Buy engine

down to an ichiban for a SR20DE out of a late model s14. also got manual clutch and flywheel. and a starter motor.

put all the old rotor stuff i'm not going to be useing now up for sale.


pulled off shit i don't need and cleaned most of the engine.

i'll endevour to get more of the info all put into this one thread.

just about to start on the diff conversion. since it's going to be more fun than doing stupid uni assignments.

picked up a tarago diff today. 4.5:1 so i'm about to go and see if i can get it fitted tonight.

looks pretty close to the corona one

diff is in. it's actually a 4.3:1
it's also been welded up good

just need the tailshaft cut down 30mm.

hopefully it will hold a lot more punishment than the corona one.

if the tailshaft is done then YES.
if the tailshaft is not done then NO.

will miss the next few events due to work so the next outing will probably be the rallysprint. was hoping to get to a khanacross before the rallysprint but with work it looks like the rallysprint will be the first event for the new diff.

i'll need a nav for the event me thinks due to having never driven on those roads !!!!

that and it's all about spending the least amount you can. eg. diff for 200.
cheap as chips.

that and i don't spend money on anything else, except uni books.

No chance :( spent 12 hours replacing walls today, got about the same amount of work to do tomorrow. The Lancer is not quite ready for racing yet :( Trying to get it done in time for Wakefield on 1st June.

great pics. what were the results?

was this a proper rallycross, or like a glorified offroad event or similar? i didnt realise there was classes for cars with non period/standard engines if it was!

was a closed club rally sprint.

one of the shortest ones around at only 4km per competive stage. and it's the narrowest one as well.

not sure on results yet but i didn't go that crash hot. there were only 15 starters but i'm pretty sure we finished in the top 10.

i'll post some full details tonight about it but here are the after pics from the weekend.
