Awesome x 11ty billion. Love those elephant ear paddles, be a bit worried bout carving your fingertips off in a bingle though!
How hard a conversion was it? I'd love to have a play car with a bike motor in it, or a fun road car but i'm fairly sure the Dept of Transport here in brisbane would have a hernia over it.

Fuck small world alright. I grew up in Vegas, kicked around with Dwayne Aisilbie who I think is Jamies nephew. Jamie tuned the solexes on my KE70 wagon once, knows his shit. Awesome starship anyway bro.
I love it!
I've gotta start looking for a busa motor and turbo kit.

raced in the Penny Rd hillclimb today (1.9km tarmac),showers on and off all day, road never dried. car was going awsome, tyres working well on the wet road, very predictable (for a starlet anyway) but 40m from the finish engine shut down so coasted through finish,FI fault light on but light out wen re-started indicating no fault present.checked fuel level before next run and topped up, removed air filters and coverd hole in bonnet as thought they might b getting wet causing problem, next run pushing harder had a close call comming into right hander after long straight (unsettled rear over un-even surface and steped out, just got it back but didnt lose much time. right infront of spectators and dad lol) good run but engine cut out again this time after finish. thrid run engine cut out twice so slow time.will get it to do it again and read code before restarting it to find problem.
5th overall, 2nd fastest 2wd (1sec behind 1st 2wd a 4age turbo fwd corolla)

Love it. Just had to say that before I go and check out the video. Self built?

thanks, yea my dad and i built it
Thats awesome. Can you elaborate on the driveline between the engine and diff?
toyabusa
12-12-07, 02:56 PM
teeth were machined off bike sproket and it was pressed into the centre of a 4 bolt flange, a very short (500mm ish) driveshaft made from a mitsi vr4 one bolts up to this, on the other end is a coupling to drive the toyota k40 gearbox input shaft (we use this to get reverse rather than buying a $2000 quaife reverse box, and is driven through 4th gear which is 1-1 for foward driving.its bellhousing was cut off and the box is mounted back near the centre of the car) the coupling is a toyota clutch hub that's splines fit the splines of the input shaft, we also wanted it to be able to slide to allow for engine movement and chassis flex etc, so the coupling also houses a bearing which slides on the snout the release bearing woud normaly run on.after the toyota box is just a normal shortend driveshaft to the diff.

Just awesome, nice job :)
That cool, any more info on the air shift?
Thanks

paddles switch 1 12v solinoid valve each (right paddle up, left down) compressed air is stored in a little oxygen bottle, regulated and then present at one side of each solinoid valve. when switched, air travels to one of two ports on a double acting actuator mounted to the bike shift lever moving it from centre one way or the other (up or down), spring loaded shift lever returns it to center when paddle is released.
did you try to set up a cable shift before you went solinoid and if so did it suck ass ?
toyabusa
23-01-08, 03:07 PM
no had the paddles with solinoids from the start but decided to make up a stick shifter while sorting out teething problems with the car and thought the air shift mite be the next thing to give trouble, the stick uses factory mitsi cables and is really good to use.want to use the paddles again tho they're cool in an old rallycar

1st round of three Ngongotaha tarseal hillclimbs today
managed to strip out another 26kg from the car yesterday ( passenger seat, car battery, first aid kit, tow rope, zedtka, passenger foot plate ) 5th overall out of 30 cars, 1st 2wd ,1st in class and set and then rebroke the class record. didnt put a spanner on the car all day ( just a bit of duct tape lol )
pretty happy with that!!
now how to go faster in the next 2 rounds?
now how to go faster in the next 2 rounds?Add a turbo.
toyabusa
28-01-08, 01:37 PM
yea that would work but id be in a different class. i want to make a rear diffuser because now theres no fuel tank uder the floor behind the diff there is a big pocket to trap air and the rear lip below the bumper will be surely acting as a wind break
toyabusa
28-01-08, 01:54 PM
this is my idea obvisly blocking the sides off and stopping air getting above it over the front of the diff
hey man, that diffuser looks awesome, hurry up and make it!
those are some pretty impressive mspaint skills!
toyabusa
31-01-08, 02:40 PM
yea who needs CAD? lol.going to make it this weekend.this is what i have being made for the car as we speak, should save another 60kg.car should weigh around 660kg ready to race minus me
toyabusa
05-02-08, 07:26 PM
i hav some more video of the car from latest tarseal hillclimb but cant seem to edit CD. anyone know how i can? windows movie maker wont accept it
hmm fuck , cant upload to youtube ?
toyabusa
05-02-08, 07:41 PM
yea probly could but its like 15mins of other stuff, then 3 clips of my car goin past, wanted to just edit all the rest out
toyabusa
06-02-08, 12:59 PM
finished making diffuser, just have to seal off the front edge with some plastic underbody.i think it looks good and has to have helped airflow compared to how it was
this car gets a big hell yea from me, nice work man, must sound fucking amazing on full noise

went to taupo race track on sunday, qualified 9th out of 57 cars including a lot of dedicated tarmac cars.
race 1: was ment to be 9th on the grid of 10 but a 2003ish bmw m3 csl ( carbon roof etc )stole my spot so i started on the outside in the last row next to him, he got me into the first corner but i was close for a lap and thought id go for a pass into the hairpin off the pit straight but spun in the esses before it. bugger.was catching it every lap after though.
race 2: was 9th on the grid in a different group this time, passed 3 or 4 cars in this race. mk2 escorts, prelude and a fxgt
race 3: was on pole next to a group n wrx, i fried the tyres off the line and he got me into the first corner, i was all over him for a lap and passed into the hairpin at the start of the 2nd lap.from there pulled away.had the crowd cheering aparently, and on the warm down lap every marshal was clapping
finished the day 11th out of 57, the bmw m3 ended up 0.60sec faster on his fastest lap than mine, go the 1300cc starlet!!! haha

Many thanks mate.

Love it!
Good stuff! How much weight did you save on the front end?
toyabusa
28-02-08, 06:28 PM
havent weighed it again yet, will let u know as soon as.
fibreglass has been painted and got it sign written today, not entirely happy with sign writing though, we can def improve on the headlights
toyabusa
02-03-08, 01:53 PM
was wet for the hillclimb today, had a good day car ran faultlessly.finished 1st in class, 1st 2wd and third overall, 2 seconds behind an evo3 and 2.5 behind a gtir pulsar
havent weighed the full car again yet but saved about 7kg on the front end, less than what we were hoping for but owel
toyabusa
24-03-08, 06:51 PM
right, sign writing re-done, how it was ment to be! still hav to fix the lights.
made up an alloy air dam to stop air flowing from the bumper duct under the car, now it has to go up and through the radiator and oil cooler.
started making a strut brace also alloy, will bolt to the firewall also because no room between throttle bodies, just has to be TIGed up and ill finish it off.i tacked it together with an alloy reel in our little mig but looks like shit so its getting welded properly this week
while the alloy and sheers were out i started making another oil cooler bracket, will get a swage (spelling??? lol) put into it for some strength and looks
Is there anywhere with a detailed right up explaining how to set up the motorcycle gearbox with a car unit? Also regarding the use of a standard stick shift arrangement?
toyabusa
28-03-08, 07:08 PM
i could maybe help, what do u mean exactly?
toyabusa
11-05-08, 04:52 PM
strut brace was finished before the last round of ngongotaha hillclimb series but decided not to fit it incase it changed the car from what i knew at that particular hill.
Ngongotaha hillclimb #3.
awesome day, fine but cold ( track felt slippyer than in round one ) pushed hard and after run 1 had re-set my class record from 59.82 to 58.91 and was second overall.
run 2 new record 58.47 and was 4th overall
run 3 new record 58.35 and finished 4th overall, first 2wd and first in class
didnt touch the car all day.
Old coach rd, bent sprint. 2.2km
only had a practise run and one timed run due to another starlet breaking a power pole in half.
fast open road, had the car in 6th pulling 10,500 across the finish 180-190kph ish.
finished 3rd overall first 2wd and first in class
Tarseal autocross today ( tight hairpins and cone slaloms somthing relativly new to me and very challenging i found) , 50+ cars enterd some with dual drivers.
practice run was terrible i had two spins went the wrong side of two cones.
Run 1, took mum for mothers day haha, had a good run very slippery ( dusty concrete ) thought it was just ok untill another competitor told me i was leading by 6 seconds!!!
now heres where it gets interesting/annoying, i was under the understanding that fastest run wins so before the 2nd and final run i said to mum, "ok we're leading, we may as well push as hard as possible and try to beat our already fast time an if we hit a cone or spin its ok we have that to fall back on"
we were flying until the last slalom where i hit a cone big time!! ( +5 seconds, run ruined ) thats ok our first time will probly hold up ( anyone improving 6 seconds was going to be doing well! )
sure enough no one beat my first time, wicked i won!!! um wrong! "you know were adding run1 and 2 together right?" dammit aparently i hit 2 cones in the final run so + 10 seconds!!! times added together and im second overall little dissapointed but owel. had i knowen that i wouldnt hav pushed so hard in run 2 and it would hav been mine. shit happens, still fastest time of the day suprised and very happy
this car is the shit!!!!

Bad luck on that they should have told you. Yeh usually they add the times to be overall. Then there is a chance for others to catch ya, makes for closer racing.
Your car is wicked and seems your owning anyways. Could you link us to the vids of it?

http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=kW-Rw9cTISk this is the only video i hav so far but im chasing up two different vids from the autocross.
yea the timing should have been in the event regs or said at drivers briefing but wasnt, im over it now i should have made sure myself anyway and will next time, lesson learnt.

Are your hillclimbs on dirt over there?
Good idea actually, it'd be another event all the rally boys could run at.
toyabusa

we run dirt and tarmac hillclimbs, you could find an event every weekend if u wanted
This thing sounds awesome.

07-06-08, 06:15 PM
ok just heard from a mate that the organisers of the autocross decided to use fastest time after all of that because we only got 2 of the 3 runs done due to the amount of competitors, so i am 1st overall, stoked!!

Taslo rallysprint series rnd 1
put the tin front back on to do some much awaited gravel bashing,
10km gravel sprint 3 runs accumulative times.
took first run easy got used to the road and car, pushed more in the second and more again in the 3rd didnt take any big risks and finished 5th overall, 1st 2wd and 1st in class.
Taupo classic 2wd only rallysprint series rnd 1
another 10km gravel sprint, raced up the road and back down to make two stages, fastest run up added to fastest down to give ur time for final results.lost my exhaust from the collector back half way through practice so limped out with it dragging, cruised back down the road and wen we got back to service had just four 200mm or so pipes from the head left haha LOUD!!!
RUN 1 ( up )
pushed hard, one close call but not major, set a time for this direction that nobody beat all day.
RUN 1 ( down )
pipe blowing fire straight onto radiator hose so wrapped it with survival blanket out of first aid kit and limped back. re-directed header pipes away and wrapped better.
RUN 2 ( up )
cruised through ( main aim was to set a time in other direction ) 2 seconds slower than first run.
RUN 2 ( down )
pushed hard and set 2nd fastest time for this direction
RUN 3 ( up )
beat our first time by 6seconds
RUN 3 ( down )
8 seconds faster than previous run this way ( fastest overall this way )
awsome!!! won the day overall against some very well known cars

pushing hard in second run and a lot up on the last time but about halfway thru the input shaft to reverse box broke, day over!! would kill to know wot that time was going to be but owel thats racing and easy to say now huh!!

looks like it ran no 3 big end, locked up, broke the bolts then snapped off just below the piston. managed to stay inside but smashed an oil gallery tube that is cast as part of the crankcase.
piston hit head and valves. head and valves apper to be ok at a glance but will have to be checked out.
cylinder bore is toast along with crank.
Have been pricing up parts but none available in NZ, was planning on turbo at the end of year so will build it up to suit. ie low comp pistons, rods, possibly 08 crank ( 2mm stroke increse over older model, better oil supply to bearings)
TK are you able to get hold of pistons and rods etc very easily?
or do you know of someone in NZ you could reccomend me to for things like this and balancing etc?
Bugger about the engine - good excuse to go turbo though :)
or do you know of someone in NZ you could reccomend me to for things like this and balancing etc?

I was having a look last week at a bloke's 'Macbusa' as he calls it. Neil Mcleod. He's got his hands on one of Brock's old machines that looks similar to the aussie race cars. He's trying to make a competitor and is running a Hayabusa motor in it. Pretty quick bit of kit. Does 0-100 in 3.1 or similar. weighs 400kgs. He's run it at the Noosa hill climb, and he also runs the Lowood Mechanical Museum.
Really nice and knowledgeable guy.
This is the only image I could find but my jolt some memoires..
