Bit bored so I thought I would chuck up some pics of the toy.

Bought it like this:

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r3/dansedgli/Image004.jpg

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r3/dansedgli/Image006-1.jpg

Bent the front bar and rear bars on various trees. So took them off.

Here it is making 63rwkw.

Got some bigger tyres:

Got some new bigger tyres:

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r3/dansedgli/maverickcentipedes.jpg

Got a new front bar and some spotlights.

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r3/dansedgli/bullbar.jpg

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r3/dansedgli/newlights.jpg

I dont have anything big planned for it, just lockers, a winch and fixing whatever gets broken. It's slow but it's a heap of fun.

looks good mate, is it petrol or diesel? those look to be 35 inch simex's, what sorta lift is in it? doesnt look like much guard clearance there.

i really gotta start a thread on here of my offroad toy/pos

Yep 35 inch simexs. I think its got a 2 inch suspension lift. It has a 3 inch body lift. It was lifted like that when I bought it. The tyres dont rub now that Ive spaced the front diff forward a touch.

Its a petrol one on LPG. Economy is pretty good, losing spark when going through bogholes isnt :(

What is a SOG car? I bought it from the guy at premier tint in the first few photos.

Ill check the books later.

I doubt the cops would have used the luxury XLT for SOG work. They prefered base spec, less shit to break.

Since Jan Ive got a winch, sliders, rear bar, air compressor and replaced the busted factory locker diff that I had with another factory locker diff which doesnt work after a few weekends out. :S

Then I smashed it this morning. Lost it on a slippery clay hill going up and hit a tree at about 15 km/hr. Lots more damage than I was expecting. :(

On the way home the alternator seized up 3 hrs from home. Tried various things to at least turn the water pump but failed.

The other car we went with had to leave early so we had to wait for a mate's Dad to come with a trailer.

The culprit was a $12 bearing which is now fixed. Fitted a new starter motor while I was at it and modded the bar to clear the winch better since the crash.

Im having a bracket made to fit falcon alternators which are 40 ish amps more and heaps cheaper and easier to find 2nd hand. Ill carry a spare from now on.

Dansedgli
06-09-08, 07:39 PM
Alternator conversion done. It handles high loads way better than the stocker. Headlights, spotlights, compressor, heater can all be running and voltage stays at 14 volts. Before it would struggle to reach 12V!

Front air locker fitted yesterday. :)

http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r3/dansedgli/DSC00171.jpg

Got a new winch hook and a deflator and ordered some synthetic winch rope to replace my dodgy kinked and broken steel cable.

Snow pics are impressive, nice one. What was it like driving on snow? Way different to sand?

Dansedgli
06-09-08, 09:03 PM
Ive never driven on sand so I cant tell you.

Its hard to steer out of pre made ruts and its easy to get stuck. At least with snow its easy to dig yourself out if there are no trees to winch from. :)

Snow drifting is good fun too.

Front lockers are awesome. :)

If only the factory rear one would stay locked consistantly. :(

Here are some pics. I bought a new laptop for oziexplorer too. It fits nicely on the dash and has in built bluetooth for gps. I just need to make a bracket for it.

Got myself an EFI manifold and dizzy and a microleb to suit. :D

I bought the EFI manifold and dizzy from geelong a few weeks back, it had looms to plug into a microtech. A few weeks later I was browsing ebay and found a microtech to suit a GQ in Queensland, I sent a few emails and it turns out the microtech was off the same car that the manifold and dizzy came from.

Winnah.

Im going to move the LPG to inside the car behind the front seats and fit a standard petrol tank. We are going to tassie at the end of the year and Ill need the extra range.

I got to test my new winch rope on my house yesterday. It worked good.

EFI project has been abandoned in favour of a straight gas research setup with a 2nd lpg tank. I bought a car with all the gear I need and I can wreck the car out and get all my money back so the gas research stuff is practically free.

I just need an adapter to fit the throttle body to the carby manifold then its off to the gas joint to have the 2nd tank fitted and everything plumbed up.

Still have to fix my body mounts once exams are over next week.

Got some new HID converted lightforce 240's last night, they work a treat.

Did you get the rebate from the government for the gas conversion?
Apparently even if you use second hand parts you can still get the rebate.

Some guy on TT or ACA was complaining that people are getting second hand parts and paying to get them installed and then pocketing the excess money.

Dansedgli
27-11-08, 09:44 PM
Yeah you can claim the rebate even if you use 2nd hand parts. All I did was add a 2nd tank and the gas research gear. It was already on gas so I cant claim anything unfortunately.

My 1 trip old brand new starter motor is fawked so that has to be replaced this weekend now. :(

How many KW now? 63 must have been a little dangerously slow. :p

Dansedgli
26-04-09, 08:17 PM
Dunno yet. Shitloads more. Maybe 100rwkw! :D

It made 63 on little tyres too. It has 35's and probably 200kgs more steel bolted to it now. It was painful on the highway.

When I go out with mates we always have races going up hills. Usually if you pick the right gear and only drop to 90km/hr you win. :S

It feels like it can accelerate up hills now so Im happy.

Need lots more details on the turbo conversion!
+1!

Either clean up your engine bay or hurry up and get that turbo dirty, it looks weird like that! :p

Dansedgli
27-04-09, 06:51 AM
Turbo will get dirty to match once I get a decent airbox hooked up to the snorkel.

Not much to tell on the turbo details.

Its a T04e and log manifold from Snort Performance, rated to about 500hp, it has a .84 rear housing and twin internal wastegates. Geoff at Snort is making just on 300rwkw with one on a falcon at 16psi.
there is a crane hi6 with boost retard triggered from a pertronix electronic ignition module running ignition.
Gas Research throttle body and a single B2 converter for now. Might get a 2nd one and twin lines from the twin tanks later on.
Big ebay cooler.
2nd hand dual port turbosmart BOV.

Im not looking to win dyno comps or anything, Im just after the power to get up hills without going back to 3rd gear at 100km/hr.

turbo510
27-04-09, 10:12 AM
I rate this truck, should go anywhere now.
You planning on hooking the snorkel back up?
Thats the Patrol 4.2 engine isn't it?

Dansedgli
27-04-09, 06:37 PM
Yeah its a petrol 4.2 litre. Pushrodded OHV donk. It seems to boost by 2000rpm but its a bit hard to tell with no exhaust. Its damn loud.

Its a dinosaur of an engine and its half fucked but I have nowhere to do an engine swap atm. It started blowing fucked rings smoke a few weekends ago.

I figured I'd get the turbo conversion out of the way now so at least I can enjoy it in the meantime.

Im getting water for the turbo from the gas converter lines. Oil feed is from just under the number 6 cylinder. There is a small bolt stuck in the engine blocking the hole.

Ill definitely be hooking the snorkel up or getting another one made up. Ill probably need a custom airbox too so the intake is sealed properly.

HoonBoy
27-04-09, 08:13 PM
Sounds like a very do-able conversion.

2JZR31
27-04-09, 08:31 PM
63kw from 4.2L is a little sad lol. I'm guessing that some boost would really wake this up. I know the old 250cross flows loved some boost up em. Can you do a ford 4.0 conversion on these things?

Dansedgli
27-04-09, 08:49 PM
Yeah its pretty bad, they have to move big gearboxes and diffs though. I think they were quoted at 120kw at the fly when new.

A mate just had his rebuilt with some headwork and a good cam and it only made 95rwkw. He didnt get any change from $5k.

Dellow does a ford kit but apparently its pretty shit. It also puts the exhaust on the wrong side and its impossible to get the exhaust past the transfer case so you need to go under the sump which sucks imo.

If I did a conversion it would be a holden 5l or a chev engine. The kit for those is a few grand just for bellhousing and bits you need from Marks4wd adapters.

Turbo conversion was under $2k. :)

A mate of mine picked up a tidy GQ LWB RB30 dirt cheap about 6 years ago, Fitted Rancho suspension, Bodylift, 35" tyres and so on, but when it came time for the motor he changed it for a Nissan Diesel :dunno:

I remember it costing a bullshit amount of money for the motor, plus the ongoing hassle of fitting it, almost everything was different with the RB30 GQ's (Gearbox diffs Xmembers driveshafts)

At the time I had an NA RB30 skyline I had turbo'd, just running the factory ECU, Injectors, ebay cooler, factory T3 turbo and 9psi of boost it made 208rwKW, had NO lag what so ever, and a bucket full of torque.

I tried in vein to convince him to EFI the RB30 and turbo it...like yours it would have been a sub $2000 conversion and reletively hassle free.....but he would'nt have a bar of it

He now has an 80 Series cruizer with a HSV 195i Holden motor in it.....goes well ;)

Dansedgli
29-04-09, 06:06 PM
That does sound a bit silly.

You just cant help some people though.

Got the car back from the exhaust joint today, dump pipe is done. It runs really well on 5psi. It boosts early and pushes me back in the seat.

The motor was struggling before I put the turbo on so Ill leave it at 5psi until I get the motor sorted.

It has power to get up hills now. :)

do later model DOHC patrol engines fit without too much hassle (any less than the SBC option)?

Dansedgli
30-04-09, 09:07 PM
They are bloody expensive to buy. Ive seen them for $6k.

As far as I know the bolt pattern is the same for the gearbox but they are a taller motor, nothing a body lift wouldnt fix.

I think they have the fully variable VCT as well so you would need an autronic or motec I think.

It was a thought but the price put me off.

Dansedgli
03-05-09, 03:39 PM
I hooked up my crane Hi6 map hose so it retards timing per degree of boost. I left it at half a degree per psi and it feels good on 9 psi now.

I had to redo my intercooler piping as well. It was running out of gas and I needed to add in a half inch pipe/scoop into one of the pipes to route air to the top of the converter to fix it.

I went to a hill that I always struggle to get up while maintaining speed, I always had to down change and give it max revs. I accelerated up it. :D

The mav is 11ty times better to drive now. I want to find little tyres and see if it does skids.
