sounds good looks ok, mind if i ask how much it cost ?
Im going to be running 26x8.5 slicks as a minimum, and going to be mini tubbing the car to fit it.
I payed 1000 for shell as is, its been sitting for a bit, when i clean it up a little i will post more pics and as things start to happen.
Wahoo, looks good.
Are all the workshops down there mad?
should be good, hope to see it on the street ;)
Cool, ought to go well then, what sort of times are you expecting?
Im hoping 9.5s with some track time but who knows :)
I started chipping out the sound deadener today, im going to buy dry ice and try it apparently works heaps good.
Also i was susing for minitubs and i might need to move leafs in a little, anyone had experience with this?
http://www.yellowbullet.com/forum/showthread.php?t=42655
i like the crossmeber they used to mount leaf mounts inwards more, and check out the rear sliders.
Not a datsun but may be a similar setup.
On my shitter the front leaf mounts were un picked and moved in 100mm a side, then from above that section of the floor is braced into the main hoop of the roll cage
http://www.oke020.com/jt/store/images/2533.jpg
The spare tire well was removed and a piece of 2.5m sheet was folded up and used to extend the rear shackle mount points all the way across the back of the car.
http://www.oke020.com/jt/store/images/2534.jpg
Oh yea pimp, thanks for the help, mine will be similar, ill show you when i start but should be good. Only difference is my front leafs go through the rail then onto the floor. So when i make new rails for the mini tubs i will mount them onto these.
I done this today

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v430/SR910/DSC01942.jpg
I need to remove some more stuff like some heater hoses behind motor, and the clutch master. They are fouling on the back of the motor and i could probably move the motor back another inch.
Heaps of bonnet clearance, just trying to get more room in front of the motor.

no fucking around
Yea i plan to try get this pos done not rushed, but work steadily on it all the time. I have decided that the tubs are going to be larger then the current wheel arches, so will be not just extending them inwards but also out. A little extra work, but worth it when the 26x8.5 fit easily and the car isnt jacked up to all fuck.
*subscribing to thread*
eager to see this thing finished and skidding
got a goal completion date?
also dry ice works fucking sick, my old cop car laurel we used it and had it done in an hour with 4 bricks, 2 people and 2 hammers :)
No completion date, usually governed by money. Im definatly going to have manual setup for this as well, sr to rb conversion bellhousing that pdawg, rvk355 and i are going to jig up. Its so i can do better skids lol
Aight ill be hitting up BOC soon as for that dry ice shizzel, cheers for advice.
there is a gearbox with bellhousing already done sitting down at Japanese Import Spares...they didnt want much for it either...
fo real?
Im ringing tommorrow cheers, my mate wants one asap
pdawg rang they want 2500 big ones, going in with cash to see if they talk my language.
yeah that was the price they gave me and the boys the other day...I didnt wanna post that incase it was a special one...kujiro speaks the language of cashola but dont offend him with bs offers or he wont wanna play ball at all
yeh with 2500 i nearly fell over, will see what mr cash can do for me
Ok niggers time for an update, i have been focusing on the wheel tubs today, i want to get it ready so i can get them rolled.

Where in inner tub towards the centre of car it is pretty straight, i slowly flappy wheel it with a few jigs i made to make sure its flat, still need a bit of cutting on some corners and the old wheel tub that is left has to be cut and folded up so create a larger diameter wheel tub. Im now even thinking of going to run 28x9 maby. Im increasing the diameter of the standard tub by 2-2.5 inches depending how far out i go.
shit is fucking bling, hurry up wanna see some skids on bridge already
tomorrow im going to get some sheet metal, so i can start on the fire wall notch, and i might extend that a little as well. Also got to start making the new rail for the rear that i have chopped out.
http://www.are.com.au/Big%20HP/grunter/eng.mount12-07.jpg
These are the style of engine mounts i want to make, does anyone know what rubbers they are, or just leaf rubbers from small car such as 1200? (they look similar)
Also does anyone know about making solid bushes to replace the rubber ones in leaf springs? can you just use alloy?
Are you building this for a specific class?
nah not really just for my own enjoyment.
what classes are there?
Street 289 is the big one. I'd have to read up on the rules but the 289 stands for 28 x 9 tyres :)
Yea i knew about that thats why i was even thinking of going that size tyre, and a 1200 would have to be competertive, even tho the top 10 are like all in 8s lol
cant race 289 cos i chopped rails out
It is just so much better to have a class to race in both for you and for the next guy if you decide to sell. A car that is class legal would be worth a fair bit more than one that is just a mongrel...no offence :)
Oh and 432rwkw is gonna get you 8's with the right weight/chassis
Yea i was thinking about it but like that other datsun 1200 wagon, i recon hes chopped the rails cos there is no way to fit a decent slick under there.
i can only hope 8s, but with the auto its only got 380 rwkw in it :)
i gotta come round and have a look at this fucken thing one day
shits gunna be ridiculous
Just been doing the new chassis rail

thought you said this thing would be a slow build at this rate it will have 50 runs down the quarter mile before ALLMTR makes a update post on his build
yea i know but i want to actually see some progress on this thing. I cant really do too much more to the tubs till i get the wheel tubs rolled, i think this weekend i want to get the rail made, in and sitting nice and straight, and also tie it into the old chassis rail at the back.

Hats off to you buddy thats a tops effort!!! :)
haha thanks, got to start some time so sooner the better yea.
I mounted cooler today, im going to get the outlets changed to some tight 90 deg bends tho.

great project. any idea on paint, wheels etc? how hardcore race car is it going to be? lexan windows, methanol etc?
dare I say it now after you've already cut things and started making new rails, but if you're going to the expense of tubbing the car, would it be better to make it able to fit a larger slick than what you've previously mentioned? something more like a 28x10.5?
I still want to keep it a bit normal, i know what you mean about the tubs, only reason i havent gone bigger is the cage in it already, and for the weight of the car i think they should be ok? Some vl run into the 9s on them so i think a car carrying heaps less weight should be ok.
I was also thinking about methanol cos its cheap, but id have to go atleast 8x1000 cc injectors minimum, and id have to try package that into the runners, i could do it but would have to be top and bottom i would think.

Why SR for a drag car though?
already got the setup in my crashed bluebird, only reason to stay with it. No point getting rid of it and going something else when the money and time has been spent with it if you know what i mean.
Finished cutting the inner guard all nicley and stuff, made template to get the tubs rolled to on monday as well.

You think 432rwkw aint enough for a 2200lb car?
my injectors are out of flow, im thinking of going methanol cos its good, cheap, and only need to upgrade injectors. Thinking of 8 x 1600 indys, i have 3 044 sitting here and the gains in ignition timing should be substantial.

Ive been toying with the idea of going methanol myself. Anyone have any experiences on using the cheap coogee chemicals meth compared to VP.
Id also like to know about cheap methanol.
I have been going on with the tubs...i have one nearly fitted just needs a bit more trimming and fitting and ill get a pic of it in place.

I'll check with my mate tonight (he bought a 200L drum in the last few months)

Ive been told the etracing meth is the same as the elf just a different drum and its $285 for a 205L drum.
I just hit up 8 bosch indy blues that were supplied by bosch australia so legit shit, and another 044, so got 3 044s in total, should flow enough fuel through a -10 line!

Could you mount it behind the headlight?
fuck yeh. finally some decent progress. project 9's will be ready for the street soon
Could you mount it behind the headlight?
even if you could it would have shit air flow
Could you mount it behind the headlight?
I had a look not really cos the IC piping needs to go there, the only real option is a custom made long dual pass oil cooler in front of the IC on the bottom section, sort of like how a RX7 stock oil cooler looks, but I don't want to be spending the money atm.
How about a massive pro stock style bonnet scoop, put it in there. :)
lol maby ill adapt a gtir scoop and then join boostcruising lol
edit: also with some of the pics there looks like there is heaps of room behind the headlights, ill get a pic with the inlet plenum there and there isn't much left after you get the intercooler piping in then the radiator etc.
Looking good :) not sure if this helps but when i ran out of frontal room when my corolla was 13bt i used twin supercoolers, one under the crossmember and one spanning the gap from bottom of lower radiator support panel to front of crossmember. Ground clearance was suprisingly good, i do realise the SR has a heaps lower sump.

If it's a drag car, why does it need an oil cooler?
Why did you notch the firewall? They fit well without touching the fire wall.
Saw the gazzanats DVD with your bluey on it the other day, very impressive.

getting the weight further back for better balance
need a jewtube link of it so rip it and upload it

i plan to give the car general beat down in other things, i mean we don't even have a drag strip here so it will be driven on the street. its not completely blown drag car thats why now i think ill keep it on petrol etc.
Also i had the motor in and didnt really fit "that" well, seemed to have a bit too much of a downward angle, the sump was too high and the rear of the box too low to get the tail shaft to fit, so i notched the crossmember to get that down and thought be good to get motor back while im cutting. Also with my plenum that i use getting the motor back is better and mostly because i wanted to lol.
cheers for comments, also i have a dvd here whats easiest way to rip and upload in divx i could do it.
Still waiting on my camber tops but they should be here in a few days, also cut the metal for the drivers side seat rail. The surge tank should be all laser cut by tomorrow, will pick that up when we get pdawgs SR20 from TKs workshop as its finished machining. Then i can drill some holes in it see if it fits nicely and get it all welded up. The fuel rails are getting bored as well, so i should have a fully operational fuel system in the next couple of weeks. Suspension will be nearly done im getting some 350 lb springs (prob too hard) but getting them cheap so can always onsell them.
What else, just figuring out how i want to mount the fuel cell etc in the boot, not sure how im going to do it yet but i think ill mount the whole thing an a nice alloy sheet thats bolted through the floor.
Waiting on my other 5 point harness too.
On a side note what is the plate dimensions etc that i have to mount the crouch strap through to the floor?
Got the camber tops today, it hink im just going to spray can all my suspension components, if i feel the need later I might put it all off and get it powder coated.

Just a thought, isn't that going to spill oil all over the inner guard every time you change the filter? Is there room to mount it elsewhere so the oil falls without hitting the guards etc?
There not much room i could hang it under the car, but im running smaller filter and its not that bad, only spills a little i just wrap it in a rag and undo it.
I looked to mount it somewhere on crossmember but no room
I have the same issue with my car. End of the day a bit of oil spill is a bonus, rust prevention. :)

the sleeves them selves arnt welded on, just the bottom support ring is.

10sec_rx7
21-10-08, 09:19 PM
6 point cage will be fine to 7.50 dude.... just have both side bars welded in...
if your not going to race in sport compact then streatch the wheel base
what sport compact class would i fall into, the all out one? That was what it would be last time i checked

Must be good to have your own hoist :) so whens the macdonald bros clip arrive?
i thought u would have one with all your projects going on :) im not gonna use one of there clips, im actually making it out of race tech tube, it should be real simple. I bought a notcher and a guy i know builds cages so im paying him to bring his hydralic bender around and bend the rear bars that go over the diff (what ever they are called) Should be easy. Im going to make some sort of jig so that everything is straight in the car though.
also because im staying borg warner with 31 spline axles and full spool i have a different 4 link bracket set cos the tubes are like 5mm smaller then a 9", but im buying shocks, springs, wheelie bars and parachute off mc donald bros cos they are cheap!!!
I think borg will be fine, im keen to try rather then go 9" like every other car.
tripper
04-11-08, 12:08 PM
needs wider tyres , as i can picture a diff and axles.
I should be asking how you are going to fit a diff in the back.
looks good
i was going to go bigger but i dont want to over tyre this thing and my ideas keep getting bigger and bigger. Im going to stick to 3540 and ran as fast as i can. Almost bought a T51R the other day but retrained my self.

Measure twice and cut once, pretty good thing the diff was only like 2mm out in lenght that we worked it out that it had to be, considering how gay it was to clamp it in the drop saw etc.
Good to see progress on this thing. I love pictures of major body work missing (and the ensuing jigsaw puzzle)!
get back to work poof, wheres the four link??
rmf prob high on coke not answering phone
im waiting for my 4 link its been over 2 weeks im actual getting devo. When i get it the rear will be put in. Then ill order shocks and wheelie bars.
i really need the 4 link because the diff is the right length. Ill put the diff and wheels under make sure it fits easy, then i can set up the 4 link, i take the tyres out and set the diff up at the height i need.then just start fabricating really.

for the shocks use strange double adjustables... about $1000 from VPW
i was gonna usa QA1 double adjustable are these better?
10sec_rx7
14-11-08, 10:29 AM
much of a muchness, strange are more common
only reason was gonna get those ones from mc donald bros was cheap too, about the same price with brackets and shit
10sec_rx7
14-11-08, 10:39 AM
you sure they are double adjustable??
yea they sell both single and double
10sec_rx7
14-11-08, 10:55 AM
you sure they are not spax
11-1501 SPAX ADJUSTABLE COIL OVER SHOCK KIT (pair with bracketry) $ 820.00
11-1502 QA1 ALLOY BUSHED COIL OVER SHOCK KIT (pair with bracketry) $ 920.00
11-1503 QA1 ALLOY BEARING COIL OVER SHOCK KIT (pair with bracketry) $ 980.00

looking sweet mate, are you ordering a rear clip or going to make it yourself?
nah i make my self, i could MS paint how im going to do it but its WAY more compact then the mcdonald bros setup, because they mandrel bend big RHS its real bulky, im using 38mm cromoly and bending that up
10sec_rx7
14-12-08, 09:16 PM
just get a rod andrews set of rails..
www.andrewsracecars.com.au
top guy
if you use moly you will need to do a dual rail to be strong and stiff enough
what u mean like 4 rails going back?
also his rear rails out of box section looks the same as mc donald bros
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v430/SR910/mspaint.jpg
10sec_rx7
15-12-08, 07:52 AM
you need more bars than that, that will be floppy as your cock was on saturday night...
do dual rails or you will not be happy :)
just do the back the same as our car.. there should be plenty of pics around
aight ill sus now, might as well copy it really

15-12-08, 01:09 PM
ok ill draw something now
10sec_rx7
15-12-08, 01:17 PM
here is a dodgy as fuck drawing
your going to need 1 5/8x .063 crome moly tube and a good tig welder to do it all, the results will be worth it.
its going to cost you fuck loads in CM tube...
a good tube knotcher is $149 from hare and forbes, just get a 1 5/8 hole saw for it and your good to go, very simple to use and get 100% perfect joins
i have a pimp ass speedworx notcher already, just susing a tube bender now
also ordered shocks off that link u sent me
also not possible to mig this bad boy?
10sec_rx7
15-12-08, 02:08 PM
no cannot mig moly if you do it wont pass...
if you want to mig you will need to use CDW
i didnt realise that, all the cage places here mig it? im gonna have to ask some questions
i could use CDW prob not that bad a compromise
well i have to say thank you to my nigger dale for saving me lots of money on cunts that have no idea, the cage dude recons u can mig moly for andra, what a fucking mong.
Im going to take you original advise and do with the 50x75 rails and do it all in mild steel.
10sec_rx7
15-12-08, 05:33 PM
cdw is heaps fucking easier to work with and shit loads cheaper...
i would not get in a car that has moly mig welded.... it is not strong and will not join correctly and any one with any idea should know better
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v430/SR910/DSC02213.jpg
stange shocks nigga, also got a heap of 50x75 and 50x50 steel section to make the rear of my car, also a heap of 1 3/4 seamless as thats what was available (more expensive) but is good shit for the cage.
while u lazy cunts are relaxing im welding in some plats on my sil panels to take my 4 link rails

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v430/SR910/DSC02217.jpg
obviously the 4 link brackets wil be trimmed down and will sit lower, im susing how to make the rails but i need some help guys
I want to run wheelie bars but im running into issues, as i cant weld to the top of the diff as its cast borg warner. Now i have the left and right lower mounts on my shock brackets so that's sweet. What i was thinking is where the rear cover bolts onto the diff, making a nice 8mm steel plate that uses all those bolts and has a mount coming off the top (well it will be to the right as the center is offset) and mounting the top wheelie bar bracket to that. Sound reasonable?
had an after thought, i think i may be able to squeeze some taps on the top of the diff on the left and right side (small tube side is left side as center is offset) and be able to mount wheelie bars off there.
Also i think im gonna have to pretty much trim the whole number plate section out of the poor car to wheelie bar clearance.
HoonBoy
29-12-08, 09:56 PM
The cover's come loose over time and cause them to leak, I wouldn't be relying on those bolts to hold the wheely bars in place.
yea i recon i should have it sused, im going to make a bracket for the wheelie bars and the anti roll bar.
10sec_rx7
30-12-08, 06:45 AM
use the mcdonald bars and you can put both top and bottom bars onto the axle tubes...
what roll bar you going to use??
i highly reccomend the andrews race car one, it is not cheap but the design will never bind up, they are about $800 tho :(
looking good mate
http://www.mcdonaldbrosracing.com.au/images/sprung1.jpg
is that the one your talking about man?
Also what is the difference between the rod andres roll bar and mcdonald?
http://www.mcdonaldbrosracing.com.au/images/wheeliebar1.jpg
or that, the problem is i have fuck all room on the axle tube on one side cos of the offset center of the borg warner pos.
10sec_rx7
30-12-08, 10:29 AM
you need to use the solid ones,
the difference is in the design of the bearings that support everything, most have a bearing on the bar itself, the rod andrews ones have the bearing on the end
10sec_rx7
30-12-08, 11:09 AM
use the solid wheelie bars, sprung are fucked for 4 link setups
here is the andrews bar
http://www.andrewsracecars.com.au/product_158.html
it will never bind up like the other setups on the market
yea i have an idea on how to fit it all on should work pretty easy.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v430/SR910/mount.jpg
might use some thick C section like that and weld the mounts to it so the mounts can be partially hanging over the cast center section to allow clearance for the shockers.
Ill say it again, this is awesome. Slow days at work and reading entire thread. nice work playa, you've got some skills

cheers man this is the reason that i keep updating the thread, and the fact that i need help from dale lol
that will do the job perfectly
awesome im gonna do that, it hink im gonna wait and save some more money and buy Andrews sway bar kit. Do you think the McDonald bros wheelie bars or Andrews wheelie bars? They look pretty much the same as the end of the day.
im a little bit stuck, what length are wheelie bars about 60 inches?? i think im gonna have to cut the rear number plate out to fit them ill take some pics
also dale maby venture to my gtr thread i need help with my oil pick up for my sump, im taking pics now
10sec_rx7
30-12-08, 01:59 PM
ive got the andrews bars.. they were $850 from memory for the unwelded kit. they then need to be tig weleded up, 60in or nothing on your car, we are running closer to 70in :)
im waiting on my andrews sway bar kit, should have it next week i can then take a few pics for you but i can tell you his gear is the best bar none, thats why a lot of chassis shops buy it off him.
in saying that i will be using mcdonald bros floaters on our car as well..
will go to gtr thread
cdw is heaps fucking easier to work with and shit loads cheaper...
i would not get in a car that has moly mig welded.... it is not strong and will not join correctly and any one with any idea should know better
You know what the dodgy trick is? Mig and then dress it up with a tig over the top....
PS Don't do that.
10sec_rx7
30-12-08, 05:30 PM
ive seen it done... and the old bog trick over the top of the bars...
ive seen it done... and the old bog trick over the top of the bars...
is that a trick? I thought it was best practice
10sec_rx7
31-12-08, 07:48 AM
its fucking scary that shit...
Had to trim a good 65mm of the brackets to get correct distance for wheel center line
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v430/SR910/DSC02229.jpg
The rear of the car clean and empty with the diff and links out to measure all heights for chassis rails to be fabricated.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v430/SR910/DSC02226.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v430/SR910/DSC02225.jpg
This is a jig im using to make the rails, needs some more additions but will be clear later, im using it to clamp all the pieces of 50x50 together so they will be nice and straight when i weld it, and the 2 rails will be close enough tot he same to save any issues.

What are the rules with the rear stays of the cage, can they goto the top of the new rails where it goes over the diff? I read the whole anrda book and cant see anything specific.
10sec_rx7
02-01-09, 08:45 PM
you could but i wouldnt,
i would run the bars from the hoop to where the rails join the body, then run bars from them down onto the top of the new rails
had a bit of an epic fail with one of my measurements, but i can fix it and no one will know.
Ill do the cage how you said to do it.

you think cops will notice??
also getting the slicks out was a fucking actual cunt, is it common (seem to see it on a lot of rotors) to have to cut the edges of the guards?
Looks good mate- though I think the tunnel looks way too small..
Is that at ride height? Getting big slicks out is always an ordeal. Getting the car miles off the ground is the only way to make it easier.
Good work man, looking tops - guess who gets to help me when I eventually get around to sticking a 4-link in the tonner?
Re - getting slicks out, as muz says, way up in the air & tip the rims over sideways as they come out. You can use a handy chunk of 4x2 to lever the diff down a bit if need be.
cheers guys, yea muz the tunnel is getting chopped out, the tail haft would travel actually right thought he top of the sheet metal.
tony i could help you do it easy, are you gonna narrow the chassis or just install a 4 link to the tonner frame?
We dont own rotors:lol:

lol
oi do u recon i could enter all japan day??
seriously will it be ready in time?
I would like to see it there...
depends what you call finished really, once i have it rolling i will have all the running gear installed in under a week, only thing that needs to be fabricated is and exhaust manifold.
Next thing i need to do tail shaft tunnel
if you are happy to bring it down not moving under its own power, we are more than happy to have it as part of our display...
its a show for the people...and people would love to scope out your shit...its not every day you see a 1200 with slicks that big...not in adelaide anyway
my aim is to have it moving under its own power, only thing i need is the axles and the spool to do that, fitting the rest is easy as. My hold up is the spool, romac sold it to some other company to make and they have massive back orders.
10sec_rx7
06-01-09, 01:59 PM
nice work dude
yep slicks are cunts to get out...
moving under its own power is even better
just cut the guards, took about an inch off just on the edges, tyre fits easy as now.
I think i been talked into making my floor out of tube along with a nice new cage. make it ten times easier to mount the tunnel and the seats etc in it,
10sec_rx7
09-01-09, 09:16 AM
ah oh look out...
im gonna do it out of race tech mild steel, also dale if i was to replace the fire wall how does one go about this? I was gonna cut it just near the feet to keep std fire wall but i need to stop cutting somewhere.
10sec_rx7
10-01-09, 06:01 PM
personally i would leave the factory fire wall....
U recon just the floor then and tie it in where your feet are keeping factory fire wall?
