Hi,

I picked this up end of March. It's a Stockman 125cc superkart. Has a 6 speed sequential gearbox and front disc brakes aswell as the normal kart setup of single disc on the rear axle.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a130/jeremyax6/IMG_1086.jpg

I stripped it down and cleaned it up, with help from a superkart guru fixed up the dodgy wiring that had made the previous owner give up on it and leave it in a shed for 4 years. Also put a new top end kit into it.

I made some extra pieces up for it a new dash and some brackets and finally rolled the kart out for my 1st ever race event and drive of it last saturday at the Oran Park "Do it in the dark" meeting.

Spent the 1st bit of qualifying running the engine in and learning the kart. By race 4 I was already starting on the front row of the grid and took a fastest lap of race. Lapping the south circuit in 45.7894s with an average speed of 154km/h.

Unfortunately the kart came to stop whilst looking good for 2nd in the trophy race which was dissapointing. Still took out the class win though.

Driving the kart was simply awesome, the acceleration and handling is mind blowing. I have never been around corners so quick in my life. Now I can't wait to get back out there and do it again!

cheers,
Jeremy

Love it. Good work on the class win!

What killed the kart? Nothing major I hope.

Not sure what killed it yet. Haven't had time to work on it. First up i'm going to have to clean all the crap out of it that I collected when I pulled off the track :(

Looks like a heap of fun and relatively cheap...

Do these things have suspension at all? if not do you feel beaten up at the end of a race?

jeremy
08-05-08, 04:44 PM
No suspension at all. Here is a pic from when I was stripping it down. This is all that is under the bodywork.
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a130/jeremyax6/IMG_1117.jpg

I still have a couple of bruises but the adrenalin pumps a lot and you don't feel anything till the next day.

How are your calves? First few times out on a kart and my calves where hurting for days. Ribs and kidneys didn't feel to flash either.

How much does it all weigh? and is that just a built CR125 engine?

jeremy
08-05-08, 04:55 PM
Calves, ribs and kidneys are all good :) My seat is fairly well contoured to suit my body shape which i'm sure helped a lot.

My neck was a little sore sunday and monday but that was expected.

Race weight is 180kg.
The engine is a Honda RS125GP.

I'm with Cal. I use to race these things when I was 17 and had no fear but I couldn't see myself behind the wheel of one these days.

I'm sure it still gets the adrenaline going though :)

Good luck, Paul.

Need to wait to see if Dirtyrex comes in here, he has raced superkarts a little. ;)

So how does it compare to the sprint kart in your avatar?? Obviously top speed and accel is way higher but g's and cornering speeds way higher too??

Used to race sprint karts as well and always wondered what superkarts would be like...

Awesome work on the first meet, no mean feat.

Cheers

It's a different world from the 100cc J that's in my avatar.
The rotax max that I breifly owned was a lot closer to the performance of this new kart, they were lapping in the 49's.

Compared to sprints, I love the superkarts. The larger track suits me much better. Lots of room, lots of options, and much faster :)

Also, I should point out I was running the Eastern Creek gearing. So next time out I hope to have the correct gears in and improve my time some more.

Yeah I heard Dirtyrex has had a bit of a go at superkarts before :)

here is a link to the superkart australia 'main portal'. It has links to each of the state club sites where you should be able to find the race calendar.

Come out and have a closer look and you will be hooked :). The guys are all very happy to talk to anyone to give advice on getting involved.

What did that set you back? I was keen to buy one a little while ago but there aren't too many places out here to race even normal karts, let alone superkarts.

I found the thread... Nice kart Jeremy. The RS125 is probably the most reliable engine of any of the classes. Not too much goes wrong with them, which is how it should be.

If there's anything I can do to help, let me know :) I still know a few people.

I picked up this kart for 4k. The guy I bought it off just wanted to get rid of it cause it just wouldn't work for him. Turned out to be dodgy wiring. I had to do a little bit of work to clean it all up but I'd say it was well worth it considering someone just paid 15k for one that's best lap time is slower then what i just did.

Cheers mate. Will keep that in mind. Everyone says that the engine is reliable and will run hard all day. That's one of the reasons I decided on this kart/class.

Had a bit of a look at the engine the other night. Looks like the bottom end was about to let go. Checked out the fuel pump too and it is a little sick and it seems that it stopped just in time to save me picking up bits of engine.
Still yet to split the engine and check it out properly though. Will have to get on to that soon.

I found a thread on there saying that I was going to make a comeback :D I was going to do the national rounds for Stockman but the license was going to be a serious pain (P's FTL ). News travels fast.

Jeremy: Definately have a good look at the motor. Some people in superkarts were great with maintenance, then others just complained they kept breaking down (usually for a reason...).

Just looking at that engine I realized it has no powervalve. Would that make a difference to the performance of the kart(is it allowed?)? How similar are these to a CR125 engine which would have the powervalve, and may offer gains in that case.

CR125 has
Compression - 8.6:1
Bore x Stroke = 54 x54.5mm

Good stuff mate. It is good to see another person joining the superkart ranks. My cousin Sonny was out there also. He didn't do to bad.

I think Phillip Island is comming up soon too.

jeremy
12-05-08, 08:55 AM
Motor is a NX4 (97).

Yeah no power valve but we keep the revs very high so it's always in it's powerband.

Sonny was great to watch! We had a few battles on track for position. At one stage there was 4 of us fighting over the same piece of road. He was driving to the limits had a couple of very interesting moments and a couple of big crashes. 1 of them was big enough to bring the safety car out.

Do you know if he is heading down to Phillip Island? It's on this weekend. I won't be there though, need to sort the engine.

I last spoke to him a couple of days before Oran Park and he was organised to head down to The Island.

As jeremy says, not really needed. I have a couple of RS cases here that have been used in karts (you can pick them due to the fuel pump hole drilled in the inlet) And they run biiiig porting. Everything is machined out and they are all top end in a big way. They just rev the shit out of them and keep the revs right up :D

dirtyrex
12-05-08, 08:09 PM
Karts also don't care for power curves like bikes because we have shitloads of grip (8 inch slicks). We don't need much driveability so max power is the main concern. Saying that, the RS250 pulls out of corners better than the TZ250. Honda's FTW.

jeremy
12-05-08, 10:34 PM

I haven't drilled through my case yet cause I am running an electric fuel pump. Will probably go to a pulse pump eventually to get rid of the battery and the electric pumps that seem to be fairly unreliable.

2 stroke newbie here, is a powervalve the same thing as a reed valve?

msmola2002
16-05-08, 07:17 PM
No.

Power valve is in the exhaust. Reed valve is on the inlet. An actuator opens the valve depending on what revs you are pulling. Fattens up power range on the bike, so the thing has some low/mid range go.

i too have one of these, if anyone is interested it's for sale. mine has the older nf4 rs125 reed valve jobbie with pulse pump.

rs 125's piss all over the dirt cr 125's in power terms.

They are essentially the same engine though - the only real difference would be gear ratio's, porting and carby. Everything else about them is the same - put the same two engines side by sides and the castings look identical. I would say the reason the RS engines put out more power is because that is where the racing determines the engines strengths need to be, while the motocross bikes need max acceleration, so torque and power in the lower rev ranges needs to be considered - this is coming at the expense of top end power.

btw - I had my 2nd race meeting in Superkarts on sunday at Wakefield. Started the day pretty well, finishing race 1 in 3rd outright. Race 2 I had some issues that sent me back down the field and spent all race 3 recovering from that plus an off in turn 2 at the start of the race.

Still won the class on points. My quickest lap time was 1:04.9
Now i have to go search for more jets and gears so I can get the kart really flying!

jeremy: Catch you there..I wont be able to make nats either, but I'll have my brand new 250 twin on the 2nd/3rd. FYI, there is also a possibility of a practice/race the next weekend as well...this is with a ARDC and is pretty laid back, lots of track time & only $120 odd. If your interested give me a PM and I'll sort some details.

Maybew the nats will be a good opportunity to do your flag day (if u havent already) and watch the other guys at different points :)

Awesome! Well not that you can't make the nats but for making our club race.

I heard the weekend after the 3rd is a supersprint. Looks like I won't be able to make it to that anyway.

No can do with the flags this weekend though unfortunately. Disappointed I can't do it as it'll be good to see the guys go round.

And on top of everthing else, I've got to get my kart back together and ready for a practice/demo day down at wakefield for an Autosport track day on the 19th July.

AndyMac - check out this link hhttp://www.horswellracingteam.com/rotax_in_superkarting.htm

If you need anymore info then just post up and i'll do my best. You should get a call from Wayne soon though if you emailed him (rotax rep) and he'll get you on the right track.

First race for the year is on 1st Feb at Wakefield. Running under AASA so you won't need a CAMS licence if you can't get it sorted that quickly just need to buy a Wakefield licence.

With the boost switch, it was just a spare switch that did nothing so we put a boost label on it for a laugh.

And for anyone who cares i finished my first superkart season in 3rd place in the 125cc gearbox class. Finished 2 race days in 1st place and 1 3rd place. Had some reliability issues throughout the year and missed a couple of races but hoping to go even better next year.

Quick questions.... What tyres and how much are the fibreglass bodies for Rotax?

jeremy
27-12-08, 10:44 PM
I think the rotax guys use the Maxxis HG3 tyres.

A lot of them also use standard sprint kart body work. For fibreglass kits you can check out these guys in Victoria who do awesome work http://www.hyperracer.com/hr_pages/max/price_order.html but there kits will probably need to be modified to fit your kart as they build there own chassis.

Or you can try this one for $245
