Okay, so I've had the arguments, pushed my case and won over the wifey, I am now the proud owner of a 1978 mk 2 escort which has been purchased with the intention of entering a few auto cross events with the geelong motor sports club ( www.gmsc.com.au)
Firstly many thanks to mini me for selling me the car at a great price, and throwing in a few extra bits. It is in better condition than the pics show, but I am shit at taking pics, so it's not the cars fault.
Hopefully it wont require much to pass scrutinering (sp), and wont brake anything in a big hurry.
I have chosen Auto cross as it seemed the cheapest form of motor sport to enter iinto, and as budget is a major thing, this is what won wifey over.
I have a budget of $2000 to buy and run the car for 2 years, and according to club members, this is heaps. I guess we will soon see.
any way, now I'm off to work out why the dissy wont tighten up (it's in a prick of a place).
hopefully I'll be posting results soon enough.

well its now done it's first event (see http://www.performanceforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=67234498) and it is a true weapon :)
After cracking the exhaust manifold whiles putting it on the trailer before the event I am now on the hunt for a set of extractors. If any one has any leads on a 2nd hand set please let me know. The want ~$400 for newbies
I think the valve springs in it are a little worn, and may need replacing, but this wont happen in a big hurry, as I am reluctant to open the engine up untill over Christmas, when I may just completely rebuild it(in standard trim)
I also intend to renew the brakes (they are not exactly inspiring), and to replace the seatbelts. I have also acquired a Webber carby + manifold that need to be freshened up and installed.
I am thinking of painting it red, is this the fastest colour??
a pic of the beast in action (thanks Brent)

ya should bring the volvo down next month:D
Leave the colour as is... Off white/cream is cheap and easy to touch up. Red is also a very expensive colour to buy. Better spending that money on fasts.
nastypaul
16-09-08, 10:42 PM
ha ha... I doubt I will be "touching it up" at any point, I am way to lazy for that.
I just thought red with black GT stripes would give it at least another 20 hp.
though I think I may have found a set of extractors for $65..... hopefully they have more metal than rust :D

busy weekend was had, but fortunately a productive one too.
new carby, (swapped for another set "I had laying about") and re built/re conditioned inc full acid bath and lotsa bits replaced. It would have to be nearly twice the size of the standard one, so I was concerned it would not run properly. Happy to say it runs like a dream.
started first turn too :)
http://i353.photobucket.com/albums/r369/nastypaul_01/webberpwerz001.jpg
I cracked the ex manifold on the way onto the trailer last sat, brand new secondhand extractors, and "custom" exhaust system, the sucker howls now.

Well the esky has done a few more rounds and not had any problems until we started changing things ie the wheels. We have a set of ford globe 13x5.5 mags that need a wheel nut that only ford made and are proving very difficult to locate. If any one knows the where a bouts of 8 of these it would be good. These are the wheel in question:
http://i353.photobucket.com/albums/r369/nastypaul_01/CIMG2309.jpg
As well as this I have acquired a new engine for it, but I was told that it had a “dropped valve”. Now I cant see anything wrong with it other than a bit of rust on the gasket between cylinders 2 and 3:
http://i353.photobucket.com/albums/r369/nastypaul_01/CIMG2305.jpg
the engine was "apparently" running on av-gas, so has hi comp/domed pistons and a warm cam of un known specs. The engine turns by hand easily and the bores dont have any un usual marks on them
The pistons look fine:
(the rust dust you can see came out of the water jackets when I blew itout with compressed air)
http://i353.photobucket.com/albums/r369/nastypaul_01/CIMG2302.jpg
And so do the valves:
http://i353.photobucket.com/albums/r369/nastypaul_01/CIMG2304.jpg
It has had double springs fitted (I am fairly sure they weren't standard).
What should I be looking for to determine of it has had any valve damage. I expected to see a mashed piston or valve, but there seems ot be nothing wrong with it. can anyone here see any thing wrong or will it require professional help?
btw in photobucket, which code should I be cutting and pasting to embed the image? piece of crap bloody computers~!!@!!!

Looking at the top of the deck and the gasket between 2 and 3 it appears that you had a bit of leakage between those 2.
Can you remember what the bolt tension was like around those two?
nastypaul
26-11-08, 07:53 AM
the end bolts were tight as, the ones in the middle (funnily enough) were not that hard to crack, so prob never torqued down properly in the first place.
I was not sure if that was just water damage. The motor had stood still for some time in a shed, and had no spark plugs in it so was open to the elements, sorta.

shit yeah dude, $2000 budget to buy and run the car for two years. Funny thing is we are looking good to stay on budget.

graded a track onto a mates paddock, not graded well enough, and using some else' tyre gauge (ie 7psi instead of 25)= smashed car.
have found another (i think) so have a busy jan/feb before the season starts again.
lost my rolling cherry, it was an experience alright!!
So are you trying to tell me rally cars, xmas parties and booze don't mix?
damn! haha! it does happen sometimes
Just bash it all straight and glue some screens back in and keep using it.

the thing is rooted, I dont think the scrut will let me through with a car that is leaning on an angle when standing still.
she's farked.
just trying to get hold of the next one, it may even be a 2 door, but we'll see soon enough.
most of that lean looks like just from the flat tyre, and maybe a bent control arm.
but yeah if you have another lined up that's easier :p

got the seat in, done a few very dodgy pannel repairs, now all I have to do is re mount the battery in the boot, get eng/g/box in, then see what else needs fixing after a few blockies.

After the roll I'd be looking at even an alloy half cage.
nastypaul
04-05-09, 08:41 AM
I am under the impression that alloy cages aren't cams approved.
I had thought about it as a bond cage is not that dear, but I believe that if I turn up with one in the car they wont let me race, but they will with none at all.
I could be wrong but that is how I understand it.

I have admitted defeat and called in an auto elec. cunts.
if there is anyone in melbourne who knows auto electrics and wants a slab or three post here
nastypaul
12-05-09, 05:04 PM
well I just tripled the value of my car in one fell swoop. It's value has gone from about $150 to about $450, and that was for a cashie!!
While Auto elecs may be gods, they dont come cheap. There's no doubt though, they are worth it :)
nastypaul
25-05-09, 09:03 AM
I have discovered that shouting "start you cunt" at the car will, on it's own achieve very little, however, if you combine that with a few beers and a little effort you end up with something that sounds like a spitfire.
what fucktard at ford decided two doors should have different radiators to 4 doors.
cunts.
but it runs, now all I have to do is clear of about 5 things off the list (including and exhaust system )and she'll be ripping skids all hecktic styleez .
pics to follow.
who would have thunk starting a car sans extractors would be noisy :D

a quick question, are there any drag strip specific requirements that I should know about before going to a drag meeting.
I have never been and want to go for the experience but am unsure of what they will want on the car.
It has a fire extinguisher (2 kg) and a tail shaft loop. What else would be required.... apart from NOS :D

this one is not as good, but not alot worse. Did come with a 2 lt, now has your old 1600 in it with a webber extractors and a few other little bits.
I'd be keen for you to get it really, would bring it all 'full circle' if you like.

sold the old girl on sunday to make way for a datto 1600 project.
a young kid is buying it for hill climbs etc, so it is going to a good home.
