Hi all, i'm currently putting a 1uz + auto into a Toyota Coaster.

The Coaster used to have a transmission drum handbrake at the back of the manual gearbox.

Now i've put the 1uz + auto in we've got no handbrake.

What options are available for a new handbrake setup? I can't seem to find any Coasters that came with handbrake on the rear wheels.

It is a L series diff btw.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers
Joel

make a centre bearing tailshaft with the drum brake between it and the gearbox side of the tailshaft.

So using the standard Coaster drum brake?
It actually already has a centre bearing.

The drum brake would somehow mount to the body?

yeah. make a carrier bearing to support it and bracket to chassis for the backing plate and link the tailshaft to either side.

either that or try and find some light truck backing plates that use a handbrake as part of the rear drums, but as far as I know everything over 3 ton gets the hand brake on the transmission. Actually no idea why other than maybe the thermal expansion of such large drums can cause the handbrake to go slack once it cools down (resulting in runaway driverless trucks and busses)

1UZ Coaster sounds cool. Pics of project?

How does the handbrake currently mount? Is it possible to simply remount the drum on the auto output shaft?

I'll get some pics..
The drum bolted to the extension housing on the original box.
Unfortunately the output spline is quite different also.

I've found a shop though who has done this conversion before. He welds a plate to the extension housing so the drum brake bolts up and machines up some adapter for the spline. Not cheap but removes the headache.

Hydraulic handbrake? Could work on all 4 wheels if you set it up right?

I assume this is just for rego?

Is it rear disc? Why not one of those cable-actuated handbrake calipers from an aftermarket company? Apart from the cost, of course..
